Heavenly, Kirkwood resorts work on Lakeview Commons for Echo Day
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 09/11/2012 - 4:40pmHeavenly and Kirkwood resorts, through the Vail Resorts Echo program, partnered with the City of South Lake Tahoe for the third annual Vail Resorts Echo Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Through the project, 179 resort employees, friends and family put the final touches on Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach, including planting trees and shrubs, laying sod, installing park benches, picking up trash, and re-distributing sand to even out the beach.

Pedestrian hit by vehicle near Pioneer, Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Echo Road
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 09/02/2012 - 11:18pmA pedestrian was hit by a car near Pioneer Trail and Lake Tahoe Boulevard at around 11 p.m. Sunday night, tying up traffic at the intersection. Early reports were that the man had no visible injuries according to South Lake Tahoe EMTs on the scene. The man, said to be elderly, was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital. Traffic was diverted to Echo Road.

Yes, they did! And, they did it in record-setting style.
Four athletes, who are personal friends of Elaine and I, completed 10 very physically and mentally-demanding challenges in a period of 10 grueling days, way back in 2002.
I know because we were there for each and every one of those 10 memorable days that resulted in the very first Nevada 10-in-10 Challenge going into the Nevada record book.
Those four were Karl Horeis, Jeremy Evans, Rick Gunn and K. M. Cannon.

Best bet: leave your pets at home during July 4 fireworks

So says the U.S. Forest Service, which wrote a friendly reminder to pet owners that the noise from the fireworks and large crowds can make your dog, cat, rat, snake, whatever — tense and agitated. And why would you want your pets to become unhinged as you and others are trying to watch the show?

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management unit reminds folks that having fireworks of any kind — and sparklers are considered fireworks — is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Campfires are not permitted on Forest Service beaches or in the general forest. For Wednesday, July 4, 2012, only, personal barbecues are allowed at Nevada, Pope and Baldwin beaches but are not permitted on any other Forest Service beaches or in the general forest.

Heavenly honors Lake Tahoe area high school grads with scholarships

For the ninth consecutive year, Heavenly Mountain Resort awarded $4,000 scholarships to five recent high school graduates, bringing the resort’s overall commitment to the Heavenly Mountain Resort Community Scholarship Program to $180,000. The scholarships are designed to help further the education of local area students.

Man airlifted after motorcycle accident on Highway 50 near Echo Summit
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 06/02/2012 - 5:15pmA motorcycle accident on Highway 50 near Echo Summit was reported Saturday afternoon, with the victim suffering head injuries, according to dispatchers.
A Calstar medical helicopter was called to the scene of the accident, reported at 4:23 p.m. at Highway 50 near Camp Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol. The man, who was reported to be conscious but bleeding from the head at the time Lake Tahoe area medics and emergency personnel arrived, was transported by Calstar, which landed near the top of Echo Summit.
Tahoe Keepers protect Lake Tahoe and other waters from invasive species

Tahoe Keepers are paddlers who inspect and decontaminate their boats and gear every time they haul out and move between new waterbodies.

Drop off furniture, tires and appliances to the South Tahoe Refuse Transfer Station for a discounted price of $5 per truckload. The event is also open to Nevada residents, who can dump their junk for $10 a truckload.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care eyes Echo Creek Ranch for relocation

In-town public sled hills disappear

And though there are plenty of places to sled and tube around the city limits of South Lake Tahoe, the last of the remaining free places in town have dried up.
And not for a lack of snow, either. Two sled and tube hill favorites have been removed from the public after recent projects leveled some of the property to make way for expansions.
Carry chains for Monday morning Sierra commute

Small fires break out near Vikingsholm, Upper Echo Lakes area
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 4:21pmFire crews responded to two fires this afternoon, one near the boat ramp at Vikingsholm and the other in the Upper Echo Lakes area. Both fires were reportedly small and didn't pose immediate hazard.
A Lake Valley Fire Protection District captain said that crews were sent to the Vikingsholm fire at around 3 this afternoon after a power line went down. The status of the fire was it was about a 10 foot by 10 foot fire and was reportedly knocked down.

One element to driving at Lake Tahoe that should never be overlooked is the need to have good tires on your vehicle. You should check your tires for wear at least once a month and before and after long trips.
