DEA holds nationwide prescription drug Take-Back Day on April 28

This spring, the Drug Enforcement Administration and its national and community partners will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. On Saturday, April 28th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time, DEA and its partners will hold their fourth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day at sites nationwide. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

In an effort to impact the health of our community the Barton Foundation recently opened their grant opportunities for programs and organizations benefitting the South Lake Tahoe area. Barton Health Grants provide funding for programs targeted at underserved populations and/or providing great impact to the health status of the community. The total grant amount available for 2012 is set at $25,000 and is generally dispersed between five and 10 local organizations.

But it is amazing what a little focus can accomplish. In less than a year, our city is making real progress in pulling ourselves out of the morass that was so scathingly profiled in the 2009/2010 Grand Jury Report.

The El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce Education Council will hold its annual Wine Tasting/Art Auction on Friday, May 4, 2012, at 6 p.m. where ten Thomas Kinkade framed prints, along with artwork from other area artists, will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
David Girard Vineyard will be the site where the Wine Tasting/Art Auction will take place, and the Wine Tasting will feature fine David Girard Vineyard wines.

Washoe offers sacred name 'Tahnu Leweh' for Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe

With the Washoe Tribe's offering and support of El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago, a move is underway to rename Lakeview Commons Park at South Lake Tahoe in time for an official June 20 dedication.
Given its 6,000 year history, the Washoe Tribe has presented the name Tahnu Leweh (Pronounced Tah-New Lay-Way) which, in native language, means "all the people's place." It is a name the Tribe would like to gift to El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe as a symbol of peace, prosperity and goodness, said Darrel Cruz, Culture and Language Director for the Washoe Tribe.

Group works to find and name South Lake Tahoe area peak in memory of fallen soldiers

At the urging of Congressman Tom McClintock, R-Calif., a committee has been formed to find an unnamed mountain peak seen from South Lake Tahoe that will be dedicated to fallen U.S. soldiers from the area.
Congressman McClintock's office approached the U.S. Forest Service about opportunities for a memorial. Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson came up with the idea of naming an unnamed peak as one of the options for a memorial on National Forest System lands.

Fitch Ratings affirmed South Tahoe Public Utility District on Monday as part of its ongoing survey of public agencies, noting the ratings outlook remains within the organization remains "stable."
The firm, which positions itself as a global rating agency dedicated to providing value beyond the rating through independent and prospective credit opinions, research and data, gave the water and sewer district a AA+ rating, noting $10.8 million sewer revenue certificates of participation. The ratings agency also asserts that STPUD continues to have strong reserves in place that protects the district against a reduction in its property tax revenues.

On Saturday a fast-moving weather front moved into the Lake Tahoe area, creating blizzard-like conditions. The storm caught visiting San Diego resident Robert Barber by surprise. Authorities have arrested a Carmichael, Calif., man suspected in the 1980 South Lake Tahoe gas station robbery and murder of 16-year-old Richard Swanson.
After nearly 32 years, On March 28, Andrew Sanford, 50, was arrested and booked in the Sacramento County Jail for the alleged murder of Swanson. The robbery and homicide happened on Aug. 14, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at what was then the Shell Gas Station located at the “Y” on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road. Details of the case have been kept tightly under wraps.

Meyers Community Plan to be discussed at April 4 meeting

A community meeting, hosted by El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago, will take place on Wednesday, April 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (formerly Meyers Elementary School).
