Learn about four wheel driving around the Lake Tahoe Basin during the Lake Tahoe Hi-Lo’s 4WD Club meet and greet membership drive on Saturday, June 3 in the TJMax parking lot at the Y in South Lake Tahoe from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The non-profit club has been in Lake Tahoe for 50 years. They promote family recreation, social activities, enjoyment and protection of natural resources. The club has been a member for 50 years of California Four Wheel Association which is a state wide organization of California four wheel drive clubs and Gary Lefler is the local club's current president

NDOT holding public meeting about proposed South Shore Hwy 50 changes

There are proposed improvements to Highway 50 from the state line at the South Shore to Spooner Summit, and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) would like to share ideas and hear your comments. On Wednesday, May 31 there will be a public meeting at the Zephyr Cove Elementary School multi-purpose room located at 226 Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove, with an informational presentation held at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the open-format meeting at any time between 4 and 7 p.m.

Viewing guide for Amgen women's races around Lake Tahoe

On Thursday and Friday, May 11 and 12, over 120 of the world's elite cyclists will descend upon Lake Tahoe for Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women’s Race empowered with SRAM. The race presenter AEG, the world’s leading sports and live entertainment company, created routes that will challenge these top female cyclists. They will vie for the coveted jersey during the four-day race. After Lake Tahoe they head to Elk Grove on May 13, and the finale in Sacramento on MMay 14.

National Drug Take Back Day in South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County

Thousands of communities across the United States will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration “National Drug Take Back” day scheduled for Saturday, April 29 in South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove, and spots in the Carson Valley.

46,000 people a year die from drug overdoses and more than half of those die from prescription opioid overdoses. Four out of five new users of heroin began with abusing prescription opioids.

Prescribed burning set to resume around Lake Tahoe

The California Tahoe Conservancy, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service are planning on continuing prescribed fire operations March 27, depending on conditions.

If fire crews get the okay, operations will be near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Kingsbury Grade, and South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe - 15 acres at Sunset Stables Property. North of Elks Club neighborhood, East of Upper Truckee River.

South Shore Nevada - Lower Kingsbury Area - 15 acres, Edgewood Creek Area - 40 acres.

Creating transportation infrastructure key to getting locals, commuter and visitors out of cars

Lake Tahoe must improve its internal transportation systems before they can expect visitors to the region to get out of their cars and use different, and better, ways of getting around. That was the message during last week's Tahoe Talks presentation by Lake Tahoe transportation partners, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and El Dorado County.

Road closures and chain controls in place as heavy snow hits South Lake Tahoe

3:40 p.m. update: It is taking three hours from the Y to Meyers, so if you're on the road you may want to consider going inside for the rest of the day. The snow is not letting up and there is a lot more to come.

Traffic heading west from South Lake Tahoe is still slow going, and there have been several weather and traffic relate incidents on US50 west of Lake Tahoe. At this time, emergency vehicles are at the scene of a three-car accident near Kyburz. The road has reopened but may need to close again to remove one of the cars.

11:45 a.m. update: A large boulder has rolled onto Highway 50 near Bridal Veil Falls in the eastbound lane. Be prepared for diverted traffic.

Highway 50 closed from Round Hill to Cave Rock due to multiple accidents

11:39 a.m. update - Traffic is moving with escorts through accident areas so emergency personnel can finish clean up of accidents.

10:30 a.m. update: The highway closure is now from Zephyr Cove to Elks Point and it will continue to be closed for an undetermined time.

Highway 50 from Round Hill to Cave Rock has been shut down due to multiple accidents caused by icy roads.

According to Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal of Tahoe Douglas Fire, Nevada Highway Patrol shut the road down at 8:45 a.m. Friday after there were several collisions near the Presbyterian Conference Grounds.

Widespread South Shore power outage from Stateline to Meyers; Also on SR 89 and Tahoe City

2:00 p.m. update - Power has been restored to a majority of customers in the Northstar, Squaw, Olympic Valley, Alpine Meadows, Glenshire, Martis Camp and Truckee areas. Liberty Utilities anticipates customers in Kings Beach, Tahoe City and Portola/Loyalton will also be restored today, Wednesday.

There are still challenges to restoring power from Emerald Bay to south of Homewood.

No word on how many South Lake Tahoe customers are still without power, or how long to get it back on.

Prescribed burns resume around South Lake Tahoe

If weather conditions allow, the California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service have scheduled prescribed fire operations at four South Lake Tahoe area locations.

South Upper Truckee area (B on the map) - 50 acres of hand piles will be burned by USFS starting December 12 and continuing as conditions permit. Seven days burn down time. Smoke should flow North /Northeast.

North Upper Truckee area (D on the map) - 12 acres of hand piles will be burned by USFS starting December 12 and continuing as conditions permit. Seven days burn down time. Smoke should flow North /Northeast.

Holiday schedules for Lake Valley and South Lake Tahoe fire trucks

A long standing holiday tradition on the South Shore is about to get underway. Decorated fire trucks from both the Lake Valley Fire and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Departments are ready to make their rounds in the community.

The SLTFR truck will leave Station 3 at 5:00 p.m. nightly from December 10-24. Here is their schedule:

The Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge #2670 is an organization that invests in its communities through programs that help those in need. On Monday, November 14th, the Elks Lodge hosted the Bread & Broth “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” Monday Meal that provided hearty dinners to many disadvantaged members of our community. With the $250 donation provided by the Elks Lodge’s sponsorship, B&B was able to provide full course, nutritious meals to the grateful folks who came to St. Theresa Grace Hall for a free meal and food to take home.

Sunday afternoon fire off of Highway 50 and Kahle Drive

5:50 p.m. update: A vegetation fire in Rave Meadow between Kahle Drive and Elks Point Road in Stateline consumed about 1/4 acre before being contained by fire crews Sunday afternoon.

U.S. Forest Service, Tahoe Douglas Fire and Calfire crews responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A second fire is burning in the brush off of Kahle Drive in Stateline. First responders said flames are five feet high and so far a patch of 20 feet by 20 feet has burned with a low rate of spread.

Drug Take Back day at several Douglas County locations

USFS begins final stage of Upper Truckee restoration project, river closed in area

Beginning today, July 11, and going until October 14, the Truckee River will be closed near the South Lake Tahoe airport in order for the Upper Truckee River Reach 5 Restoration Project to be completed.

Zika Virus depleting blood supplies

United Blood Services is holding a blood drive Wednesday, May 18 at Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Station 23 in Round Hill. Donations have declined since mid-March and the demand has escalated, dropping the available supply of Type O-Negative and Type O-positive to extremely low levels. Blood center officials have concluded that an increase in Zika deferrals after Spring Break travels has caused a decline in public responsiveness to donate blood.

Victims in South Lake Tahoe plane crash are indentified

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the two people killed in Saturday's plane crash in South Lake Tahoe.

California residents 73-year-old Conrad Yu of Oakley, and Mary Choy, 66, of San Francisco were killed when Yu's plane crashed shortly after take-off in the area near Elks Club Road an Pioneer Trail. The plane crashed into a tree adjacent to a home on Tionontati.

NTSB and the FAA continue their investigation in order to determine the cause of the crash.

Two people die as plane crashes in South Lake Tahoe after takeoff

8:00 a.m. update 10/12/15: Authorities spent Sunday removing parts of the plane that remained in trees surrounding the crash site that claimed the lives of two people in South Lake Tahoe.

Investigators say the plane hit trees before crashing behind a home on Tionontati Street just before 5:36 p.m. Saturday, October 10. A fire started which scorched the home.

The force of the crash broke a large tree just feet away from the house.

Lake Tahoe road work schedule for September 20 - 26, 2015

LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

Black Bart Avenue and surrounding streets to close for surfacing project

El Dorado County's Transportation Division has announced upcoming partial and full road closures for Black Bart Avenue, Barbara Avenue and Martin Avenue in order to complete an overlay project starting September 21, 2015.

Black Bart and Martin Avenues are scheduled for directional closures September 21, 22 and 24 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. During these directional closures, motorists will only be allowed to drive in the direction from Pioneer Trail to U.S. 50.

Tahoe Douglas Fire blood drive in honor of injured firefighter

Tahoe Douglas Fire pancake breakfast to raise funds for injured firefighter

On March 29, 2015, Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern fell through the roof of a burning home, resulting in severe burns over 70% of his body. In the days since the accident, firefighters and other concerned people from around the country have been sending both prayers and money to the family.

The outpouring of support is also evident on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. On Sunday, April 19, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and The Local 2441 are putting on a pancake breakfast to raise money for the mounting expenses for Dern and his family.

Free flu vaccinations on Saturday

It's that time of year again for flu shots!

All South Lake Tahoe residents on both sides of the state line are invited to stop by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Station on Saturday, October 25 for a free flu vaccination.

The flu vaccinations are being provided by Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) and Tahoe Douglas Fire.

Shots, mist and high dose for seniors are all available from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Tahoe Douglas Fire Station #23 located at 193 Elks Point Road.

Fire operations begin Saturday at several South Shore locations

A multi-agency prescribed fire operation begins on Saturday, October 18 as the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team has crews from Tahoe Douglas Fire and the U.S. Forest Service at several locations around the lake.

Fall and winter bring cooler temperatures and precipitation, which favor prescribed burning. Each operation follows a prescribed fire burn plan, which considers temperature, humidity, wind, moisture of the vegetation, and conditions for the dispersal of smoke. This information is used to decide when and where to burn.

Prescribed burns to take place on urban lots in Lake Tahoe basin

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the fall/winter prescribed fire program this week. Operations may take place tomorrow, October 16, 2014, on various urban lots around the Lake Tahoe Basin including Elizabeth Drive on the West Shore, Christmas Valley, Angora Creek, Elks Club Drive, Echo View Estates, and Bakersfield Avenue on the South Shore.
