Opinion: Is Meyers a community willing to work together?

After witnessing the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District (TPRID) meeting last week I starting thinking how the residents of Meyers and Tahoe Paradise could be better served.

What happened at the TPRID meeting was a sad display of a board in action. There was yelling, arguing and, what one person witnessing everything said, “don’t air your dirty laundry in a meeting like this.”

Letter: Measure F will create a terrific destination college

I have worked at Lake Tahoe Community College for over 21 years as a classified employee. In those years, I have seen a lot of changes – many good, some not. I wanted to address something that I haven't seen touched on yet regarding the college’s bond measure, and that is what happens at LTCC if Measure F does not pass.

Op/Ed: People need to come out for the Meyers Area Plan meeting on Thursday

Most of us moved to Meyers because it's a rural community, away from the City & tourist congestion. I am pro-growth, most locals are, as long as it's appropriately sized growth for our community. The proposed Meyer's Plan however, opens the door to a Mega Resort, with incentives for large development and in my mind, lacks long range planning.

I started going to planning meetings last summer, just to listen, but it wasn't until December that I got really concerned. Here's a timeline of events, from my perspective:

Mayor declares Public Employee Recognition Day

There has been a lot of anger and disappointment among the ranks of employees in the City of South Lake Tahoe over the last few years as they went through budget cuts, staff cuts, benefit cuts and a lack of raises.

"Our City Council is in a unique position," said Mayor Cole. "We understand the disappointment of our employees."

Special City Council meeting unveils successful negotiations to reduce liabilities

To avoid going down the bankruptcy path as many cities had to over the past few years, the City of South Lake Tahoe today adopted resolutions to restructure the wage and benefit packages of its employees.

The new wage and benefit plans include a mixture of more clearly defined benefits and contributions. It was the undefined plans of the past that caused $25M in unfunded liabilities.

In front of a packed council chambers full of firemen and other staff, City Manager Nancy Kerry unveiled the results of negotiations between five of the six employee groups and the City.

Op/Ed: Investing in Our Future

To Our Community,

Our journey toward Measure F began in May 2013, when Lake Tahoe Community College enacted “Investing In Our Future,” a fiscal stability plan to ensure the sustainability of LTCC for the next 40 years. The first step in this plan was to build a shared vision of the future. In September 2013, LTCC leaders brought community members, faculty, staff, students, K-12 educators, and elected officials together to develop that shared vision.

LTCC bans tobacco except in designated areas

The Board of Trustees, students, faculty and staff of Lake Tahoe Community College recognize the serious health problems associated with smoking tobacco and other non-tobacco products and the use of smokeless tobacco. The college also recognizes that tobacco smoke poses a health risk to non-smokers. In order to protect students and staff who choose not to smoke from an unhealthy environment, the LTCC Board of Trustees approved a new policy that prohibits smoking within buildings or facilities owned or leased by the District, and designates marked outside areas on campus for smoking.

I have a BA in business administration and I’m a graduate of the Institute for Organization Management. I’m a past STPUD Board member.

Op/Ed: Proposition 46 - A Harmful Direction for Patients

Backers of California Proposition 46 claim it will protect the patient and reduce patient harm. While the initiative argues patient safeguards and seems well-intended, the proposition is flawed and costly. If passed as written, Proposition 46 would discourage doctors from working in California, jeopardize patient privacy, and increase patient and government healthcare costs.
