Tahoe Homeless Coalition adjusts to COVID-19: Operations now 24 hours/day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the rapidly changing health crisis brought by coronavirus and COVID-10, the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) has a new
coordinated COVID-19 response and will be open 24-hours-a-day through April.

In preparation for increased utilization and operational capacity surging expected for the next several months, TCH has made the changes to their sheltering and support service programs. They have seen a 30 percent increase in nightly shelter requests and anticipate that number will increase significantly over the coming weeks.

Some utilities to cease temporary shutoffs due to impacts from COVID-19 pandemic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As residents face not only health uncertainties but also financial and employment uncertainties, three utility companies have announced they have suspended service disconnections for non-payment due to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 health emergency.

So far, Liberty Utilities, Southwest Gas and NV Energy have all made this announcement, but each has different procedures at this time.

Liberty Utilities has suspended service disconnections for non-payment. This temporary suspension, through at least May 1, 2020, includes residential and business customers.

Final four South Lake Tahoe city manager candidates from California and Florida

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The search for a new city manager for the City of South Lake Tahoe appears to be nearing the end. City Council has narrowed down their search to four men, all of whom will be at a public Meet and Greet on Monday, March 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Idle Hour located at 3351 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

The idea behind the meet and greet is to give the public a chance to get to know the candidates before the City Council closed session scheduled for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to select the new city manager.

New Lake Tahoe Unified School District superintendent is Whittell High graduate

During their closed session meeting Saturday, the Board of Trustees decided to reveal their announcement ahead of the previously announced March 10 date. His contract has now been finalized and he will start work at the end of the school year.

Remodel and tech investments expand medical imaging at Barton Health

Viking Corner: This week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, seniors visited the Scholarship Fair, a new school app was launched, and senior basketballers play their last home game.

On Campus

Thursday afternoon, seniors were released early from classes to experience the inaugural Scholarship Fair, an event held by the STHS counselors. Organizations like South Tahoe High School Alumni Association, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Sierra, and El Dorado Community Foundation attended to educate the seniors on how they can earn scholarship money.

Science Expo volunteers needed in both South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center is seeking volunteers to assist with this year's Science Expo. No experience is necessary and the job is "fun and easy."

Volunteers will facilitate a hands-on science investigation station with small groups of elementary students. All the volunteers need is a willingness to have fun and share science with local youth. Training will be provided prior to the event.

Inversion brings unusual heavy fog to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fog is normally associated with San Francisco and the coastal cities of California, not with Lake Tahoe.

On Friday and Saturday, a strong inversion was in place at around the 7,000-7,500 foot level, compressing the molecules that normally evaporate off of the lake and keeping them trapped closer to the ground and the lake.

Inversions exist on a fairly common schedule, but the experience the past two days was different for a couple of reasons:

South Tahoe High's Melissa Berry wins Outstanding Teacher of America award

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Melissa Berry, AP Psychology and US History teacher at South Lake Tahoe High School was selected to receive one of the five 2019 Carlston Family Foundation Outstanding Teachers of America Awards.

In November, Ms. Berry received a $15,000 cash award at the Carlston Family Foundation’s 17th Annual Awards Ceremony in Mill Valley, Calif. During Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) board meeting, she received an additional $5,000 grant for South Lake Tahoe High School.

South Tahoe High Climate Crew attends Citizens' Climate Lobby Conference

Members of the Climate Crew, an environmental club at South Tahoe High School, attended the 2020 Citizens Climate Lobby Conference in Oakland last weekend.

Led by Lindsay Richardson, a teacher at STHS and advisor of the Climate Crew, eight seniors from the club took the four-hour drive to Oakland to hear new ideas on how to encourage the community and their peers to be environmentally friendly.

First up was the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) executive director, Mark Reynolds, with a passionate speech about the late founder and president of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Marshall Saunders.

Interim city manager selected for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the departure of City Manager Frank Rush looming and a search on for his replacement, the South Lake Tahoe City Council today hired an interim city manager.

During closed session they approved the hiring of Brad Kilger who brings with him years of experience to the position.

Kilger has over 40 years of professional municipal government experience.

Remodeled rooms, lounge and restaurant part of $41 million in upgrades for Harveys Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino is undergoing some major projects including the complete remodel of all Lake Tower hotels rooms. Besides these rooms and the new Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen on the casino floor, Harveys is also adding new balcony suites as part of over $41 million in capital projects for 2019-20.

The tower’s balcony suites, with incredible views of the lake, were also renovated last year. The upgraded guest rooms and additional projects as well as a new casino bar and lounge experience opening in 2020 are part of the new capital outlay.

Plenty of Christmas Tree permits remain available in Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Plenty of permits to cut down Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin remain at both sales locations. Due to permits being sold out after just a week in the past, people were only allowed to buy one of the $10 permits per family this year.

The result is plenty of leftovers.

Opinion: No Globe Alliance appreciates efforts to minimize noise impacts

The annual SnowGlobe Music Festival is fast approaching and local residents should plan accordingly. There are changes in the noise requirements and the sound will be shut off at 10:00 p.m. the first two nights and will be required to meet the averaged noise limits defined in the Bijou/Al Tahoe Community Plan for the hours after 10:00 p.m. on the final night.

Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen preparing to open in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Many know him from "Hell's Kitchen," "MasterChef" and "Kitchen Nightmares," and now people will get to know world-renowned Chef Gordon Ramsay and experience his culinary skills at his new Lake Tahoe restaurant named after the hit reality show.

Caesars Entertainment has teamed up with Ramsay once again and has transformed the old Sage Room in Harveys Lake Tahoe to be the newest home for Hell's Kitchen.

Even before the doors open, over 12,000 reservations have been made for one of 151 seats in the 3,160 square foot restaurant located on the casino floor.

LTUSD Board of Trustees keep same leadership for 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual organizational meeting Friday, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education decided to keep the leadership they had over the past year again for 2020.

Citing a desire for experience as they go through the process of getting a new superintendent to replace the retiring Dr. James Tarwater, the board voted unanimously to have Larry Reilly continue as board president and Barbara Bannar as board clerk. Bannar has been on the board eleven years.

Local teen scholar invited to Delegation for Diplomacy in South Africa

Local teen and Lake Tahoe Community College student Laney Terrell has been invited by the International Scholar Laureate Program to join a delegation on International Relations & Diplomacy that will be traveling to South Africa in spring 2020.

New transportation plan to focus on communities, quality of life and economy

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is kicking off an update to the Regional Transportation Plan. The Regional Transportation Plan lays out the vision for the transportation system at Lake Tahoe and focuses on transit, trails, technology, and communities to support the environment, economy, quality of life, and visitor experience.
