Parents: How naming your emotions can help your kids succeed

Up until only a few decades ago, for as long as humans have existed, parenting has been guesswork. New parents would get information and guidance from their elders or peers based on anecdotal evidence. We are lucky enough to live in an exciting time where we have research to find evidence for what parenting strategies and qualities lead to the most successful outcomes for children. Of course, there is not one cookie cutter way for each child, and being flexible in learning what works best for your child is essential.

Kudos: Drug Store Project appreciates help from the community

Tahoe is a glorious place. Most of us come here to live in its beauty, but it’s the “community” that keeps so many of us here. It’s that sense of doing good for one another that keeps many of us hopeful about the future. I’m happily involved in different aspects of our community and that part of my life is why I feel so grateful and blessed. Tuesday’s Drug Store Project for our sixth-grade youth was a testament to the compassion and dedication of our agencies, businesses, service clubs, and community members for the good of its people.

Column: Simple ways to reduce the effects of seasonal change

As the seasons shift from cold, dry, and grey to warm, damp, and sunny we can easily become swept up in the shift and can lose ourselves in the change. Yoga is a practice of establishing balance, ease, and steadiness. The better we become at recognizing how seasonal changes affect us, the more harmonious we will feel year round.
