South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos see August gaming loss

Gaming profits for South Shore Lake Tahoe area casinos tumbled in August, falling 19.45 percent over profits during the same period last year, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports Wednesday.
South Shore casinos took in a total gaming profit of $22,016,651 for the month, while in August 2011 they took in $27,331,777.
Statewide casinos saw a 3.11 decrease in "gaming win" over the same period last year, the state's gaming regulator reports. Nevada casinos took in gaming profits of $859,240,472 for the month of August. In August 2011 it was $886,835,278.

Douglas authorities seek help in Carson Valley burglaries

Two commercial burglaries early Monday morning in Douglas County have authorities asking the public for help in identifying the suspects with photos provided by surveillance cameras.
The first burglary occurred at the Verizon Wireless Outlet Store on Waterloo Lane sometime around 5 a.m. Entry was made by the suspect smashing the glass of the exterior window of the store. Two cellular telephones, phone chargers and miscellaneous currency were stolen from inside. Click on images to enlarge.

Carter Fire in Douglas County burns 3,000 acres, 30 percent containment

The Carter Springs Fire in Douglas County south of Gardnerville is estimated to have grown to approximately 3,000 acres. A perimeter has been established, and the fire is now burning unburned fuels within the perimeter, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
The fire is estimated to be 30 percent contained; with full containment expected by Sept. 25.
Highway 395 has reopened with no controls in both directions. Motorists are requested to slow down while traveling through the area, and watch for emergency vehicles accessing the area.

Forest Service: Fire at Elks Point Road near Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe fully contained at 2.6 acres

UPDATE 8PM: The U.S. Forest Service reports Friday night that the fire burning on the Douglas County side of Lake Tahoe on public land off of Elks Point Road has been contained at 2.6 acres. Cheva Heck, spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said local government resources assigned to the fire are being released. An engine will remain at the fire site overnight. The cause of the fire is under investigation. "We have no reports with lightning or problems with power lines. The fire is believed to be human caused," she said.

NHP identifies three victims in Saturday Highway 395 crash in Douglas County

A Gardnerville woman and a Yerington man have been identified as victims in Saturday night's fatal accident on Highway 395 at Leviathan Mine Road, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports. A Reno man has also been identified. NHP will release the name of the separate Sunday morning single-vehicle crash later today.

Four dead in two overnight accidents in Douglas County on Highway 395

Four people are dead in two overnight accidents, believed to be alcohol related, on Highway 395 in Douglas County, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
The accidents happened within a few hours of each other. The first accident, in which three people died, was reported at 11:54 p.m. Saturday night near Leviathan Mine Road on Highway 395.

A motorcycle crash in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday night involving two riders was reported at 7:33 p.m. A CareFlight air ambulance was ordered from Gardnerville but was canceled.
Initial reports from an off-duty paramedic and a nurse was that a female rider was "unresponsive" and has facial lacerations. Paramedics at the scene said that the rider with the most immediate needs was to be transferred to Barton Memorial Hospital via ground ambulance. The other rider was also transferred by ground ambulance to Barton.

Gaming revenue, known as "win" for South Shore Lake Tahoe area casinos posted a 17 percent increase for the month of June, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported on Thursday.
South Shore casinos took in a win of $16,555,235 in June compared to $14,128,801 during the same period in 2011.
Meanwhile, North Lake Tahoe casinos saw a 29.26 percent increase, taking in $2,417,863 for June.
Carson City area casinos, which include the areas of Minden and Gardnerville in Douglas County, had a 1.11 percent gain over June 2011 taking in $8,229,305.

10:13PM: Smoke moved into the Lake Tahoe Basin on Sunday night as a result of Sunday afternoon fires sparked by lightning in Douglas County which have reportedly burned about 1,000 acres in the Pine Nut mountains east of Gardnerville. Fire crews are still working the scene, which was said to be growing at a moderate rate. Thunderstorms rattled much of western Nevada Sunday afternoon. Some scattered showers could happen in the Lake Tahoe Basin tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Red Flag warning for high winds is in effect for the mountains east of the Lake Tahoe Basin until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos see 4.3 percent decline in April 'win' revenue

South Shore Lake Tahoe gaming "win" at Stateline casinos for the month of April was down 4.43 percent over April 2011 figures, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
North Lake Tahoe saw a steep decrease in win of 15.82 percent over 2011 figures, and the Carson Valley area, which includes Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville, had gaming revenue for casinos down 3.08 percent for the same time last year.
Year-to-date figures for South Shore Lake Tahoe remains in the plus category at 3.74 percent.

TRE Fire fully contained at 7,152 acres

Cooler, wet weather helped firefighters yesterday achieve full containment of the Topaz Ranch Estates Fire 15 miles south of Gardnerville, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

The fire consumed 7,152 acres, two homes and 17 outbuildings. The local Carson City BLM District office took over command of the firefighting this morning. Ten firefighters remain on the scene, down from a peak of over 500.

The deceased driver of the commercial truck that crashed through the runaway ramp at Mount Rose Highway near Incline Village on Monday has been identified as Eric S. Holton, 31 of Gardnerville.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched at 2:48 p.m. to the accident on State Route 431, approximately one-half mile east of State Route 28, near Incline Village. The vehicle involved was a 2006 gray Freightliner truck tractor pulling a 1989 flat bed trailer transporting composite decking materials traveling westbound on the two-lane highway.

Douglas County authorities have identified the 31-year-old Gardnerville woman found Sunday with a fatal gunshot wound to the head as Rachel Ann Vargas.
Sgt. Jim Halsey of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said investigation is "ongoing" and "no additional details can be released at this time" regarding the woman's death, reported early Sunday morning, Feb. 19.

Douglas County authorities have arrested a California fugitive from justice who was convicted of sexual assault on a minor.
Rick David Oliver, 47, of Yuba County, Calif., was captured by Douglas County Sheriff's authorities and the FBI on Friday afternoon after he was located in the 1100 block of Linda Anne Court in the east valley area of Gardnerville, said Douglas County Undersheriff Paul Howell.
The law agencies learned that Oliver was at the location, recently having fled California to avoid sentencing and capture from law enforcement, Howell said.
