New faces at Tahoe Regional Planning Agency

Several key public service positions have been filled the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA).
Tom Lotshaw has been hired to work as TRPA’s Public Information Officer. He replaces Jeff Cowen, who worked for TRPA in that and other roles for eight years.
Lotshaw graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in public affairs journalism and has seven years of newspaper reporting experience. He worked most recently as a reporter for the Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell, Montana, and as a reporter and photographer for the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
Dozens of employers on hand at Regional Job Fair in Kings Beach

Thirty-six employers will be on hand at the Tahoe Regional Job Fair being held in Kings Beach on November 7.
Employers include TRPA, Hyatt Regency, Northstar, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Raley's, PlumpJack Squaw Valley, Westshore Cafe and Inn, Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe, the Ritz-Carlton, along with many others.
THe fair will be held at the North Tahoe Event Center at 8318 North Lake Blvd. Register for the event on line. The event will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Blue Ribbon Award Nominees Announced by TahoeChamber

The nomination period for the 2014 Blue Ribbon Awards ended on Friday, October 10 at noon. TahoeChamber’s prestigious awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses received over 175 nominations for eight separate award categories. The finalists and winners will be announced at the 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards dinner and ceremony on November 13 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. New interactive science exhibit coming to Lake Tahoe

The Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded $150,000 to the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) to create a new, interactive public exhibit at the Tahoe Science Center, located in Incline Village. The exhibit will merge the results of citizen science with TERC’s new, real-time monitoring network that is being installed around the lake to understand and improve the clarity and health of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.
49,000 customers to benefit from proposed Liberty Utilities power line upgrade
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/21/2014 - 9:31pmThe TRPA, U.S. Forest Service and the California Public Utilities Commission have released a final environmental impact report on the proposed electrical system upgrade in North Lake Tahoe by Liberty Utilities.
The proposed 625 and 650 Electrical Line Upgrade Project would consist primarily of an upgrade of Liberty Energy's existing 625 and 650 electrical power lines and associated substations from 60 kilovolt to 120 kV, to allow the entire North Lake Tahoe Transmission System to operate at 120 kV.

“A breakdown can pave the way for a breakthrough,” California Governor Jerry Brown said at the Lake Tahoe Summit on August 19.
The governor was speaking about the challenges people face in looking beyond their differences for common ground, whether that’s working to craft the $7.5 billion water bond California voters will consider in November or working across state lines to protect and restore Lake Tahoe.
Volunteers needed to collect sugar pine cones in South Lake Tahoe

The Sugar Pine Foundation needs the public's help to collect seed for restoration. They are starting their annual cone harvest this fall and invite everyone to come join in the fun.
All that's needed is a pair of gloves and a helmet to volunteer as a member of the ground crew. Spectators are also invited.

Forest near Kings Beach back open to the public

A portion of National Forest closed for public safety near Kings Beach has been reopened. The area, about 340 acres east of Brockway Summit and north of Speckled Avenue, was closed for safety reasons due to heavy equipment operations and falling trees as part of the Carnelian Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Projects.
The project is treating 3,300 acres to reduce the risk of severe wildfire, improve forest health and provide defensible space to neighboring communities. Work in the area will resume in 2015.

Non-Native Fish Found in Lake Tahoe

Lucas McNamara, 7, was hiking around Griff Creek near Kings Beach Fire Station last week with his family when he saw a black, spiny fish, about 1-foot-long, lying dead in the creek. He ran up the creek bed, yelling, “Dad, you need to look at the big crazy fish!”
Lucas’ parents, Steve and Jen McNamara, decided to make this a teachable moment for their son, who already shows active interest in science and the environment.
“I told Lucas that this fish is not normal for Lake Tahoe and may be harmful to the other fish and animals in the lake,” Steve said.
King's Beach Fireworks

As is tradition, Kings Beach held their July 3rd Fireworks celebration Thursday night.
They had food and beer vendors, games, souvenirs and music.

Skeletal Remains Found in Kings Canyon East of Spooner Lake

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department is reporting that skeletal remains have been found in the Kings Canyon area east of Spooner Lake.
They are conducting a death investigation and have transported the remains to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy.
At this time a cause of death is unknown.
No further details have been released and the investigation is continuing.
North Lake Tahoe Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested After Pursuit in Carson City

An armed man walked into the Kings Beach branch of the Plumas Bank Friday morning, demanding money of two clerks. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect, identified as 55 year old Brent Muir of Carson City, was sighted near Sand Harbor by FBI agents responding to the robbery from South Lake Tahoe.

Bank robber known as 'Fedora Bandit' sentenced to 9 years in prison

David Griffith Osborne, 75, known as the "Fedora Bandit" for his lengthy string of bank robberies in northern California, Lake Tahoe and at least one in Carson City, was sentenced Friday to nine years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for three counts of armed bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.
Kingsbury Grade now open for traffic; cause of fire under investigation

UPDATE 8:02PM: State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade is now open to motorists with controls. Please use caution around firefighters and equipment that remain working the fire.
Fire personnel will remain on scene to gain further containment of this fire. The cause of this fire is still under investigation.

UPDATE: 7:17PM: Around 200 firefighters remain on scene tonight on the Kings fire on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade near Lake Tahoe. The fire is approximately 4 to 5 acres in size, Douglas County authorities report. Containment is estimated by 8 p.m.
Pilot, two passengers escape injury after plane crashes near Spooner; FAA team arrives at crash site

A pilot and two passengers escaped injury Wednesday after a plane crash northeast of Spooner in the Kings Canyon area, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed.
The passengers of the aircraft were taken by Carson City Fire and Rescue to the staging area at the Kings Canyon Trailhead where they signed statements with the Carson City Sheriff's Office. Both declined comment. An official at the scene said the three had taken a flight to celebrate the birthday of a 23-year-old female passenger and that both passengers were shaken and didn't wish to speak. It is believed but not confirmed the flight originated from Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

More than 3,100 volunteers are needed to successfully execute the first full-distance IRONMAN® event in California since 2001 - IRONMAN Lake Tahoe, which is scheduled for September 22, 2013.
World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owner and operator of the IRONMAN Series, will host an IRONMAN Lake Tahoe Volunteer Meeting Monday, September 17, 7 p.m., at the North Tahoe Event Center, 8318 North Lake Boulevard, Kings Beach, California.
Of the 3,100 volunteers needed to provide behind-the-scene logistics and ground execution, 100 will serve as captains to ensure a safe and fun event.
