Tahoe Arts Project Presents Vox Musica: Music Worth Sharing

Don’t miss your opportunity to witness this stunning female vocal ensemble on Friday, January 31th at 7:00 PM at the Lake Tahoe Community College Duke Theater.

Sound an Issue at Day 1 of SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe

With a lack of snow in South Lake Tahoe to act as a buffer, the sound from SnowGlobe has more of an effect on area residents.

The concert has a maximum of 95 decibels allowed for sound, the same as last year. But with the reports received Sunday night on the City of South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe hotline, the reach of the sound is much greater and more bothersome to the callers than last year.

SnowGlobe Begins in South Lake Tahoe

Unless you haven't been reading the news or paying attention to what's going on in South Lake Tahoe, you know that SnowGlobe 2013 is here. The three day concert got underway on Sunday, December 29 and will wrap up with a New Year's Eve show on Tuesday night.

Throngs of people made their way into the concert Sunday, some decked out in costume, others scantily clad, while many took heed to the cold weather and came prepared in warm clothing. It was apparent that all were there for a good time and many started their party prior to arrival.

Lake Tahoe Community College Offers a Learn Spanish Abroad Program

Lake Tahoe Community College is offering interested students an opportunity to learn Spanish in Guatemala this coming summer. The program is open to anyone who is at least 18 years of age, and participants do not have to be current LTCC students. All levels of Spanish language learners are welcome to experience the program.

Lake Spirit Awards Given by Tahoe Regional Planning Agency

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

Actors of All Ages Wanted For Upcoming Play at LTCC

Holiday Activities in South Lake Tahoe This Weekend

Freshly fallen snow will add to the holiday ambiance of events in South Lake Tahoe this weekend!

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society invites everyone to their annual Holiday in History Open House on Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8. On Saturday from 11 to 7 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, visitors can tour the 1930s log cabin, view a Victorian holiday scene, enjoy free cider and cookies and children can even call the North Pole from a special antique phone! The event is free.

“Degree With a Guarantee” Gives LTCC Students Direct Path to Bachelor’s

Thanks to a new, streamlined transfer program developed by the California Community Colleges and California State University systems, students at Lake Tahoe Community College now have access to more degrees for transfer in a wider variety of disciplines, making it easier for them to transfer to CSU schools and earn their bachelor’s degrees within two years. So far, LTCC is offering eight new transfer degrees, with another five slated to be launched in June 2014.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

LTCC Joins Bread & Broth to Provide Hot Meals for Hungry Locals

A hearty group of volunteers from Lake Tahoe Community College donated their time to Bread and Broth recently, helping to prepare and serve a hot meal to hungry locals as part of the Adopt a Day of Nutrition program. Four LTCC managers donned aprons and kitchen gloves to serve food, prepare giveaway bags, and assist with the cleanup.

Angela Swanson Announces Run for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors

South Lake Tahoe Councilwoman Angela Swanson has declared her candidacy for El Dorado County Supervisor District 5. "There is no better time to jump in," said Swanson of her announcement. "I am in the final year of my council term and will leave office having accomplished many of my goals and with an in-depth knowledge of the key issues affecting the district." Swanson cites economic redevelopment, smart growth and community investment as her top priorities along with building cohesiveness within the newly expanded district.

How does a community deal with and recover from a tragedy that shocked the entire world? This November, the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Theatre Arts Department will explore that question in its production of “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later,” by Moisés Kaufman, Stephen Belber, Leigh Fondakowski, and Greg Pierotti. The play seeks to understand a town that is forced to cope with the aftermath of a brutal hate crime, while also facing their own biases and fears under the media spotlight.

The Family Resource Center is hosting a Cafecitos Gathering on November 5th for all Spanish-speaking parents that have a child in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. Cafecitos is similar to PTA. The gathering is designed to engage parents in school success, and provides an opportunity to formulate ideas on how parents and schools can work together more effectively. We will be meeting at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Aspen Room from 9:30am to 10:30am on November 5th. The Family Resource Center will donate coffee and pastries for your enjoyment.

A Farewell to Local Firefighter Mitch Underhill

The South Lake Tahoe community said their goodbyes today to Lake Valley Firefighter Paramedic Mitch Underhill, both from the streets bordering his procession into town from Lake Valley to those inside the service at St. Theresa's Catholic Church. The 34 year old South Lake Tahoe native unexpectedly passed away on September 29.

Mitch joined the Fire District as a paid professional on September 27, 2005 and served the community with dedication and devotion for just over eight years until his untimely death.

Tahoe Chamber Announces New Board

A new Board of Directors was elected at the TahoeChamber ’s October 15 board meeting. The board reflects the local business community in that it is comprised of small businesses, professionals, healthcare, gaming and resort representatives. Their diverse business expertise partnered with their enthusiasm ensures that our membership is well served.

Sugar Pine Foundation Has Busy Planting Season Ahead

The Sugar Pine Foundation's goal is to save the Sugar Pine and White Pine trees from blister rust in Lake Tahoe by educating and and involving the community in hands-on forest stewardship.

The group has several opportunities this fall to help save the trees by planting seedling in areas around the lake. 850 seedlings have already been planted this fall and more will be planted at the following events:

A Night of Improvisation at Lake Tahoe Community College

Most Lake Tahoe Community College Offices Will Be Closed Friday

Most offices at Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed on Friday, October 18 to allow employees to attend staff development training. However, the Child Development Center will remain open on this day. The college will resume normal operating hours starting Monday, Oct. 21. Fun Runs This Weekend

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Tri Club have partnered to provide a series of three fun runs this Fall season including Tahoe’s Freakin’ Fun Run, Turkey Trot and Jingle Jog.

The 1st Annual “Tahoe’s Freakin’ Fun Run” will be held this Sunday, October 13th at Lake Tahoe Community College Playfields located at 1300 Al Tahoe Blvd. The Fun Run will begin at 10am and participants are encouraged to dress in Halloween attire with prizes for Best Costume and Most Ridiculous Costume being awarded.

LTCC Teachers Honored for Excellence

Lake Tahoe Community College English instructor Michael O’Laughlin and Sociology/Anthropology instructor Dr. Scott Lukas have both been honored for their outstanding work in the classroom. O’Laughlin was selected by LTCC students as their Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Lukas was chosen by his fellow faculty members as the Distinguished Faculty Award recipient. The winners will each personally receive $500 thanks to a generous donation by the LTCC Foundation. They’ll also each get to direct another $500 towards the LTCC program or scholarship or classroom materials of their choice.

LTCC Mourns Unexpected Death of Tahoe Firefighter, Former Instructor

Lake Tahoe Community College joins the Lake Valley Fire Protection District in mourning the unexpected loss of firefighter paramedic Brandon “Mitch” Underhill. The 34-year-old, known as Mitch, died Sunday, September 29th.

Underhill has been an instructor at LTCC as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy since 2009. He joined the Lake Valley Fire District in 2005, and served the community for just over 8 years in that capacity. He is survived by his wife, two young children, his parents, and his brother and sister.

Lakota Sioux Dance Theater Performs This Week in South Lake Tahoe

LTCC: Back in Session

With class schedules, books and other supplies in arm, 2,351 students headed back to school today as the Fall Quarter began at Lake Tahoe Community College. Though the numbers are comparable to last year, school officials have seen a shift to more full time students at the college. According to Tom Greene, VP of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at LTCC, there are seeing more students who are working towards credits to transfer to a four year college.

Lake Tahoe Community College hosts award-winning poets

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series proudly presents an evening of poetry with Robert Krut and Patricia Smith on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the LTCC Library. The poets will read, engage the audience in a Q & A and sign books. This free event is open to the community and books will be available for purchase.

Robert Krut’s “This Is the Ocean” is the recipient of the 2012 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize, offered annually by local publisher Bona Fide Books in honor of the Lake Tahoe artist who died in 2009.

Tahoe Tri Club Creates Three Reasons To Get Out and Run

Tahoe Tri Club has teamed up with the City of South Lake Tahoe to host three family races in a new series called “Run Through The Holidays.” The three races will be themed to match each of the holidays coming up this fall. The events will infuse fitness and fun into what can often be a stressful time of year. The holiday season is a time to spend with family and create memories, and this is just one more way to do that.

Inaugural Lake Tahoe Color Themed 5k Run a "Blast"

Bursts of color surrounded the over 100 runners as they participated in the inaugural Tahoe Youth and Family Service's Color Blast Run on Saturday, September 14. The 5k course meandered through the Lake Tahoe Community College parking lot, streets and bike paths. The race name comes from colored cornstarch that is doused over the runners and they pass by strategically placed stations along the course. Once the runners came across the finish line there was a celebration of dancing and lots more color being tossed.

Casting Call for LTCC’s Fall Production of 'The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later'

The Lake Tahoe Community College Theatre Arts Department will be holding auditions for its fall theatre production of “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in the college’s Duke Theatre.

This production commemorates the 15th anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death. Several events will be presented at the college in association with this production, including a screening of the brand new documentary film, “Matthew Shepard is a Friend of Mine.”

Musical Soirée Supporting New Instruments for LTCC’s Music Department

The Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, in cooperation with David Brock Music, announces an afternoon soirée of music, food, drink and good fellowship to benefit the Music Department at LTCC for the purchase of musical instruments. This event will be held Sunday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. at a private residence in Stateline, Nev.

Delectable hors d'oeuvres will be prepared and served by members of the Culinary Arts Program at LTCC. Hand-picked wine selections from Amador and Napa vineyards will also be featured.

Color Blast!

You've seen it. You've heard about it. Now it's time to participate in it! The Inaugural Tahoe Youth & Family Services Color Blast is coming to Lake Tahoe this September! Get your team together and plan on having the time of your life....it's a real BLAST!

Teams will run around a 5k course at Lake Tahoe Community College. At strategically placed points the runners will be doused with color....it's all safe and non-toxic (color corn starch). There are no race winners, no timed runs..its all about fun. You can even walk if you wish!

Scholarship programs a big success at Lake Tahoe Community College

The numbers are in: Lake Tahoe Community College’s scholarship program had its most successful year ever in 2012/13, helping more students to reach their academic goals than ever before. In June 2013, the college handed out $81,000 in scholarship dollars: the most in the college’s history.

All of those dollars will help 66 LTCC students to continue their education, providing much-needed funds to cover the costs of tuition, textbooks, and other resources necessary to academic success.

Barton Foundation golf tournament raises more than $14,000 for Community Health Endowment

Barton Foundation's 19th annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser held on Thursday, June 20 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course raised more than $14,000 for Barton’s Community Health Endowment fund. The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.
