Science Expo volunteers needed in both South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center is seeking volunteers to assist with this year's Science Expo. No experience is necessary and the job is "fun and easy."

Volunteers will facilitate a hands-on science investigation station with small groups of elementary students. All the volunteers need is a willingness to have fun and share science with local youth. Training will be provided prior to the event.

Sierra-at-Tahoe offering special lift ticket prices to help raise money for local groups

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sierra-at-Tahoe is once again holding their annual fundraiser for local nonprofits. "Sierra For Tahoe" will be February 10-13, 2020, and funds raised by these special ticket sales will support Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, and Sierra-at-Tahoe Education Foundation.

Instead of the normal $110-$125 life tickets, participants can purchase their daily passes for only $75.

SnowGlobe and guests contribute 213 nights at Tahoe Warm Room; Make strides on waste reduction

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - MTV’s SnowGlobe Music Festival has a continued commitment to give back to the South Lake Tahoe community each year, both during and after the three-day outdoor festival.

SnowGlobe 2019 was able to successfully expand their sustainability program, non-profit, and charitable giving initiatives, they said in a report released Monday.

In 2017, SnowGlobe began its partnership with The Sugar Pine Foundation, planting 200 sugar pine seedlings to help restore Lake Tahoe’s sugar pine population, which now makes up less than 5 percent of the Tahoe Forest.

Bread & Broth recipient of successful Tahoe Chamber Connect for a Cause donations

Bread & Broth and their Bread & Broth 4 Kids program received generous donations from the South Lake Tahoe community during last week's Tahoe Chamber Connect for a Cause Charity Mixer at the Hard Rock Casino Hotel.

More than 120 community members attended the January 23 mixer to raise money and food for the group that feeds almost 180 school-age students with a backpack of weekend food as well as hot meals for everyone on Monday and Friday evenings.

Changes to how voters will vote in 2020: South Lake Tahoe vote center and drop box locations

With the March primaries just weeks away, voters will be considering not only their choices on the ballot but will also need to consider how they will cast their votes in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County.

With poor voter turnout, especially in South Lake Tahoe, and more registered voters choosing to vote by mail, the polling places set up on election days were not frequently used.

Due to numerous spinouts, traffic on US50 is being held at Twin Bridges. Crews are also in the region performing avalanche control.

SR89 at Emerald Bay is closed due to unsafe conditions. No estimated time of reopening.

Lineup announced for Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars

South Lake Tahoe City Council denies appeal of planned Verizon cell tower

South Tahoe High students 'building' up their skills for the workforce

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Gone are the old high school woodshop prerequisite napkin holders and cutting boards. In their place are sheds and dog houses built to code, giving their creators valuable life and work skills for their futures.

Students in the South Tahoe High Woodshop 1 classes have been building dog houses, complete with insulation and roofs and sides built with techniques found in residential construction.

LTCC expands child care to evening hours to help student parents

A recent move by the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is helping remove that barrier by having extended hours on Monday and Tuesday evenings so parents who are LTCC students can attend classes and/or study.

Diversity and Culture in Trauma Informed Care

The next evening of the Community Lecture Series hosted by the Foster and Kinship Care Education Program at LTCC will focus on trauma. Learn about different types of trauma and how trauma impacts individuals and entire groups. Participants will exam various case studies and conduct activities to increase self-awareness and unpack 'isms in order to increase cultural competence from a trauma-informed care perspective.

The lecture will be in room A-206 at Lake Tahoe Community College from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Thousands in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline for New Year's Eve celebrations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The ringing in of the new year was celebrated several different ways across the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

At Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe, a season-long celebration concluded with a New Year's Eve celebration attended by an estimated 6,500 people. The festivities included a 9:00 p.m. fireworks show on the gondola, concerts and special activities all day long.

South Lake Tahoe community responds to Wishing Tree at Live Violence Free

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There were 185 wish lists hanging on the tree inside Live Violence Free this year, all from clients who have been served over the past year. The nonprofit agency in South Lake Tahoe provides advocacy and education to promote a violence-free community.

Each client wrote down three gift ideas with ages and likes, and people picked out a hanging ornament with that list, all amounting to about $50 per child.

Barton Gala raises $90K for Family Birthing Center in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – More than 250 community members gathered for the 29th annual Barton Gala at Harrah's Tahoe on December 7. Their pledges and donations during the evening hit a record-breaking $90,000 to support community health in the Lake Tahoe area.

This year’s Gala beneficiary was the Family Birthing Center at Barton Memorial Hospital, with proceeds from the black tie soiree funding medical equipment and training to keep at-risk newborns close to their families in those precious first moments together.

Changes in layout planned to mitigate sound for 9th annual SnowGlobe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been changes over the past eight years with the annual outdoor music festival in South Lake Tahoe, SnowGlobe, and many of them are meant to mitigate sound that affects nearby neighbors.

The festival draws thousands of electronic dance music and festival fans from around the world December 29-31 each year.

Angel of Tahoe helps spread holiday joy in South Lake Tahoe for a third year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) helped spread cheer this season by hosting a special children’s holiday party on Saturday, December 14 at the Lake Tahoe Community College. This event was a collaboration made possible by the generosity and giving heart of the ‘Angel of Tahoe,’ Mrs. Lisa Maloff. Purchase of one electric bus, four diesel buses on LTUSD agenda Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Timing seems perfect to have a fleet of electric buses for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD), but trustees have the purchase of just one on their Friday night agenda along with the purchase of four diesel buses.

The Board's annual organizational meeting is set for December 13 at 5:00 p.m. instead of their normal Tuesday meeting. During the meeting, they will elect a new board president and clerk, and elect representatives to El Dorado County School Boards Association and Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, and assign annual duties for the trustees.

Local teen scholar invited to Delegation for Diplomacy in South Africa

Local teen and Lake Tahoe Community College student Laney Terrell has been invited by the International Scholar Laureate Program to join a delegation on International Relations & Diplomacy that will be traveling to South Africa in spring 2020.

"I am so excited for this opportunity to see how other democracies work and represent my Hometown," Terrell said.

It started on November 7, 2018. Ricky Reich, a local man who has become known as "The Angel of Tahoe's Guardian," walked into the studios of KRLT-FM on Kingsbury Grade in Stateline, Nevada. He had been listening to Howie Nave's Morning Rush shown on the station and wanted to pay homage to Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe.

LTCC women's soccer blanks Sierra College, off to CCCAA Final Four

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) women's soccer team is headed to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Tournament.

The Lady Coyotes beat Sierra College Monday afternoon by a score of 2-0 in the third round of the NorCal Regional Playoffs at Consumnes College in Sacramento. The game was originally scheduled on the LTCC field in South Lake Tahoe but snow moved it to the valley.

LTCC women's soccer wins, faces Sierra College in round three of playoffs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) women's soccer team has shutout their opponents so far in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Norcal Regionals, blanking West Hills and San Francisco City College in the first two rounds.

The 18-0-2 Coyotes will face the Sierra College Wolverines (19-3) in the third round Monday, December 2 at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento at 4:00 p.m. Sierra College beat Evergreen Valley 3-2 in overtime and Clovis 4-1 leading up to the LTCC game.

A foot of snow blankets South Lake Tahoe; Heavenly opens and road controls in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is one word to describe Wednesday: SNOW! Winter made its appearance in the Lake Tahoe basin Tuesday and will continue this week as one storm exits and another stops by.

Lake Tahoe Community College is closed for the day. The college will reopen at its normal time after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on Monday, Dec. 2. The City of South Lake Tahoe offices are open.

Turkeys and other Thanksgiving meal items to be distributed in South Lake Tahoe

The Phoenix Food Pantry and Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church have received forty Thanksgiving turkeys from the generous folks at Heavenly Village.

LTCC women's soccer team win playoff game; Host round two Tuesday in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's on to the second round of playoffs for the Lake Tahoe Community College women's soccer team. They took care of 18th seed West Valley College at the South Lake Tahoe campus on Saturday, winning the game 4-0.

The top-seeded Coyotes will host the City College of San Francisco Rams (No. 8 seed) on Tuesday, November 26.

Game time is 12:00 p.m.

Tickets for LTCC students, staff, faculty, and all senior citizens are $8. Everyone else is $12. Cash only, please.

LTCC Coyotes host the first round of playoffs in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) women's soccer team will be hosting the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) NorCal playoffs on Saturday, November 23.

The LTCC Coyotes ended the regular season as the #1 Junior College Division III team in the country with their record of 18-0-2, a spot they held for weeks. This has been the second consecutive year they went undefeated and haven't lost a game since September 2017.

On Saturday they will be hosting the winner of the West Hills-West Valley game being held Nov. 21.

South Lake Tahoe community weighs in on desired characteristics of next superintendent

What is being developed from public meetings and an online survey will create the profile of what makes up the desired characteristics neede or the person who will move into Dr. James Tarwater's position when he retires in June 2020.

Heavenly Village tenants buy turkeys for Christmas Cheer families

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It started with a chat a few weeks ago between Tom Davis of the Christmas Cheer Board and Dreu Murin of the Heavenly Village. Tom had told Dreu there was a need for turkeys this holiday season in the South Lake Tahoe community.

Dreu then spoke with Gary Casteel Jr., owner of the Heavenly Village, and a plan for a Village Turkey Drive formed.

Daughters of the American Revolution membership surpasses one million

This month, membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has surpassed one million total members since its beginning. Member number one million is Amy Dickinson from Freetown, New York. Amy is the author of the popular advice column, “Ask Amy.” Her journalism career began as a freelancing position with the Chicago Tribune. Her personal life has involved many challenges, including her father’s abandonment of the family when she was a child.

LTCC women's soccer team on top of national coaches poll for 4th straight week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team is on top of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III for the fourth consecutive week. On September 25 they rose to the top spot of the list and haven't left since then.

Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1. The team the women lost too in last year's state final, Santiago Canyon College, dropped to the twelfth-ranked team.

South Lake Tahoe Rotary to celebrate Roberta Mason at polio eradication fundraiser

Roberta recently celebrated her 90th birthday and the party continues. She has been a vital part of the local community for over 60 years and was instrumental in bringing Lake Tahoe Community College into existence. She was a member of their Board of Trustees for 40 years.

The public is invited to a Community Health Fair in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, October 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Bijou Community School;s multi-purpose room. Get free or reduced services including flu shots and free dinner from Tacos Por Favor.

El Dorado County will be offering their low-cost flu shots - $10 for everyone six months and older, but they won’t turn anyone away that can’t pay.

Free services include:

- Primary care will be there conducting blood pressure, temperatures, and pulse oximetry
- Covered CA enrollment counselors
- CPR training

$100K from 30th annual American Century Championship awarded to local nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Thursday was money giveaway day at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) meeting at Stateline. Thirty-eight local nonprofits were given checks totaling $100,000, a result of funds raised during the 30th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood.
