What's more fun than a new summer read? The Friends of the Library sale on August 16th will have hundreds of previously read, some new, and all loved books.

Author Arlene Morgan, presents her new novel "Roots of the Vine… Romance in Tuscany, an age old vendetta, and a surprising secret revealed".

She will be giving a short talk about the story behind the story...the research that provided inspiration for the book. She will also discuss the process of writing and self-publishing.

There will be a Q&A and book signing following the talk. Books may be purchased for $15.00 with 20% of the evening’s proceeds being donated to Friends of the South Lake Tahoe Library.

This will be at the library on August 6th at 6 p.m.

Friends of the Library are excited to present Todd Borg, award-winning author, who will discuss his much anticipated 12th book in the Owen McKenna Mystery Series.

Todd will also share his writing techniques while delighting his audience.

As of Friday morning, June 6, Measure L had 80.43% yes votes. So many
people made this happen. The Committee for South Lake Tahoe Library –
Measure L worked unceasingly. Our local media gave us the opportunity to
share the high stakes involved in this measure through articles,
letters, guest columns, advertising and endorsements. Property owners
allowed us to place signs all over town. Countless volunteers shared
information with their friends, neighbors and work colleagues.

It was well before the the cry of "gold" was heard throughout the country that wagon trains full of families and adventurers were making their way west.

In the early 1850's, one of the major land routes to California, traversing what we now know as Echo Summit and the Highway 50 corridor, became known as the "Roaring Road". Travel was so heavy, oftentimes wagon trains were forced to wait for days to have their turn on the road.

He will present a multimedia presentation on his newest book, "The Donner Party: Weathering the Storm" at the South Lake Library on June 18 at 6 p.m.

Sample ballots for the June 3 primary elections in California were mailed out April 25th, and absentee/mail in ballots are being mailed out Monday and Tuesday, May 5 and 6.

The South Lake Tahoe community was treated to 320 free books on Wednesday night as part of World Book Night.

Volunteers from Friends of the Library gave books out at beaches, bus stops, the El Dorado County Food Bank truck, recreation center, Senior Center, Juvenile Treatment Center, Tahoe Senior Plaza and various other places around town. They announced on Facebook that they were heading out, but didn't disclose locations until after the books were distributed.

"We enjoyed reaching out to others in our community by sharing a special book," said volunteer Lynne Brosch.

The Friends of the Library and the South Lake Tahoe Library are coming together to celebrate World Book Night on April 23. Throughout the day, volunteer book lovers will be seen in various locations within our community giving away hundreds of free books. They have a wide array of titles, from classics to bestsellers, young adult to large print. There is a book to suit every taste!

The South Lake Tahoe Senior Center celebrated the grand reopening of their full facilities on April 7 with a community party. City staff painted, reordered and reorganized the center so the seniors could once again enjoy their dance floor, library game room and offices.

A fantastic handbell concert will be presented by the Friends of the Library on June 14 when they host Tintabulations, a community handbell ensemble from Reno.

Over the next few weeks we'll be looking into the library, its services, and how it fills a need in the community and how June's Measure L affects its future.

April is a big month for Live Violence Free. It is national Child Abuse Prevention, as well as, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.

Lynne Brosch and Rich Fischer, Friends from the South Lake Tahoe Public Library, have been doing book groups on Monday nights with the teens who are incarcerated in the Juvenile Treatment Center in South Lake Tahoe.

Friends of the Library presents Debra Gauthier, one of Las Vegas’ first female police officers, who will share her book that expresses the painful reality of combating biased attitudes and the joy that comes from surpassing limitations. Packed with fascinating stories, Bright Lights, Dark Places gives you an inside look at this interesting career. The author will be sharing from the chapter, "What Have I Gotten Myself Into?" and showing a clip from the television show ‘Cops’. Book sale and signing to follow.

The event is at the library on April 26, 2014 at 1 p.m.

Jeanne Amos, director of our county- wide library system, will describe how this information center has advanced with the information age at the South Lake Tahoe Library on March 25 at 5:30 p.m. Afterward, specially invited stakeholders and other library lovers will discuss how the library can stay a vital information center into the future.

In the event of weather postponement, the new date will be April 15th. Free and open to all.

The Lake Tahoe Community College District was voted into existence 40 years ago, on March 5, 1974. The College has big plans to celebrate its anniversary with a number of fun and educational events this year. Members of the media, the community, and college staff and faculty are all welcome to attend a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th at 11 a.m. to hear the College’s plans to mark its 40th year, and to honor its history. The conference will be held at the Econo Lodge at 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, where the College first offered classes and welcomed its first students.

Signing up for health insurance can be a frustrating and time-consuming process. To ease the insurance buying process, Barton Health has stepped up by partnering with Covered California, California’s Insurance Exchange Marketplace, to assist our community members and provide Certified Enrollment Counselors for the uninsured.

The Friends of the SLT Library invite you to a Story time/ Pajama Party. Christie Rassuchine (Higman) and Robyn Lindner, two authors who grew up in Tahoe, will be reading from their newest book in their Crazy Club series, The Crazy Club’s First Slumber Party, a story dealing with being away for the first time and friends who help you overcome being homesick.

Free event but it is requested that you bring non-perishable food items for donation to Christmas Cheer.

You may have noticed the new bus shelters placed this summer along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe. They were installed by the Tahoe Transportation District, operator of the local South Shore Transit System. The shelters won't only come with seating and protect those waiting for buses from the elements, they also have new bike racks and bear safe trash cans.
