Summer Reading Clubs at the South Lake Tahoe Library

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the El Dorado County Library is holding Summer Reading Clubs for all ages this summer. From June 17th to July 26, readers can enter to win prizes, including a Kindle Fire HDX.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Book Sale and Concert at SLT Library

Author Mary Jo Sonntag Shares Interesting Tale of Family's Migration to Tahoe

Author to Discuss Novel set in Tuscany and Self-Publishing

Author Arlene Morgan, presents her new novel "Roots of the Vine… Romance in Tuscany, an age old vendetta, and a surprising secret revealed".

She will be giving a short talk about the story behind the story...the research that provided inspiration for the book. She will also discuss the process of writing and self-publishing.

There will be a Q&A and book signing following the talk. Books may be purchased for $15.00 with 20% of the evening’s proceeds being donated to Friends of the South Lake Tahoe Library.

The Crazy Club’s Open Mic Morning- Children's Story Time & Talent Contest

Letter to the Community: Thank You For Your Support of Measure L

As of Friday morning, June 6, Measure L had 80.43% yes votes. So many
people made this happen. The Committee for South Lake Tahoe Library –
Measure L worked unceasingly. Our local media gave us the opportunity to
share the high stakes involved in this measure through articles,
letters, guest columns, advertising and endorsements. Property owners
allowed us to place signs all over town. Countless volunteers shared
information with their friends, neighbors and work colleagues.

Most important of all, local voters supported Measure L. As a result of

Measure L is the Library Special Tax on the ballot this year. Twenty years ago the South Lake Tahoe voters passed a library tax where those who owned parcels in the area would be charged $20/parcel per year for the next 20 years to fund the library.

Well, that time period is up so the tax is on the ballot once again. This is not a new tax, just a request for taxpayers to continue paying the same.

65th Annual Wagon Train Hits the Trail in South Lake Tahoe

It was well before the the cry of "gold" was heard throughout the country that wagon trains full of families and adventurers were making their way west.

In the early 1850's, one of the major land routes to California, traversing what we now know as Echo Summit and the Highway 50 corridor, became known as the "Roaring Road". Travel was so heavy, oftentimes wagon trains were forced to wait for days to have their turn on the road.

LTCC Writer's Series: Pam Houston

Pam Houston will be the featured writer at Lake Tahoe Community College's Writers Series on Thursday, May 8 in the college's library at 8 p.m.

Houston’s most recent novel, Contents May Have Shifted, was published in 2012. The book has been called “an absorbing, generous, ravishing book by a high priestess of you-have-to-read-this prose” by author Cheryl Strayed, who penned the New York Times bestseller Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Sierra Historian and Author to Share Colorful Stories at LTCC

The Sierra Nevada, with its beautiful blue lakes, towering granite mountains, forests with trees that appear to touch the clouds, thundering rivers and waterfalls, and hidden valleys has long been the domain of dreams, attracting the good and the bad, the adventurous and the delusional.

World Book Night Shares the Love of Reading in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe community was treated to 320 free books on Wednesday night as part of World Book Night.

Volunteers from Friends of the Library gave books out at beaches, bus stops, the El Dorado County Food Bank truck, recreation center, Senior Center, Juvenile Treatment Center, Tahoe Senior Plaza and various other places around town. They announced on Facebook that they were heading out, but didn't disclose locations until after the books were distributed.

"We enjoyed reaching out to others in our community by sharing a special book," said volunteer Lynne Brosch.

Earth Day Celebrated in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday

South Lake Tahoe will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 26th at Bijou Community Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Earth Day was started in 1970 after peace activist John McConnell spoke at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, calling for a day to honor the earth and call for peace. It is now celebrated in 192 countries.

The South Tahoe Earth Day celebration recognizes and promotes our region’s unique beauty while educating the public about local environmental issues.

World Book Night Celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

Throughout the day, volunteer book lovers will be seen in various locations within our community giving away hundreds of free books. Letter to the Editor: Vote Yes on Measure L

I have been part of the Community since 1989 and am now a permanent resident. The South Lake Tahoe Library does more than just books and banks of computers, our library is a place where people gather to explore, interact, and imagine. It is a place where people come to know themselves and their communities. People go to the Library looking for information and find each other there.

South Lake Tahoe Seniors Celebrate Grand Reopening of Their Center

The South Lake Tahoe Senior Center celebrated the grand reopening of their full facilities on April 7 with a community party. City staff painted, reordered and reorganized the center so the seniors could once again enjoy their dance floor, library game room and offices.

Grammy Nominee and author to Perform at SLT Library

The Friends of the Library presents an evening with Linda Chorney, Grammy Nominee and author on June 17 at the South Lake Tahoe Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Chorney made history as the first Independent artist without a label, publicist, or manager, to be nominated for a Grammy in a category of legends, like Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, and Willie Nelson. The gatekeepers of the industry were not happy, and did what they could to undermine her nomination and career. But they didn't know who they were dealing with. Chorney fights back with a delicious sense of humor.

Celebration For Grand Re-opening of South Lake Tahoe Senior Center

South Lake Tahoe seniors have their center back, and there will be a grand re-opening party to welcome them back into their updated home.

The Senior Center,located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd, received new paint, new carpet, and heavy cleaning in order for local seniors to be able to use the whole facility including the library, dance floor, offices and other areas formerly used by the county's Mental Health Department.

Dr. Seuss Hats Off Exhibition Comes to Lake Tahoe

Few authors are better known than Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, yet, to this day, his Secret Art and his fantastical Hat Collection are virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Ted Geisel created paintings and collected hats which he secreted away in a hidden closet at the Dr. Seuss Estate. This is the first time ever that Dr. Seuss’s hats have ever traveled outside his home.

Live Violence Free to Raise Community-Wide Awareness

April is a big month for Live Violence Free. It is national Child Abuse Prevention, as well as, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.

South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library Supports Reading at the Juvenile Treatment Center

Lynne Brosch and Rich Fischer, Friends from the South Lake Tahoe Public Library, have been doing book groups on Monday nights with the teens who are incarcerated in the Juvenile Treatment Center in South Lake Tahoe.

Community Kudos: Humane Society and SPCA Thanks Open House Guests

The Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA thanks South Lake Tahoe for the great turn out at their open house and ribbon cutting on February 25, 2014 in honor of “World Spay Day”. TahoeChamber was present to officiate the ribbon cutting and Mayor Hal Cole cut the ribbon. It was a great turn out and a good start in the Lake Tahoe Humane Society’s mission to let the community learn about all their fantastic services, such as spay and neuter vouchers, emergency pet medical care assistance and an emergency pet food bank.

Bright Lights, Dark Places Author Shares Her Story of Being One of the 1st Female Cops in Vegas

Tahoe Rim Trail Association Talk

The 21st Century Library: So Much More than a Building of Books

LTCC Announcing 40th Anniversary Plans at March Press Conference

The Lake Tahoe Community College District was voted into existence 40 years ago, on March 5, 1974. The College has big plans to celebrate its anniversary with a number of fun and educational events this year. Members of the media, the community, and college staff and faculty are all welcome to attend a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th at 11 a.m. to hear the College’s plans to mark its 40th year, and to honor its history. The conference will be held at the Econo Lodge at 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, where the College first offered classes and welcomed its first students.

Barton Health Launches Program Focusing on Prevention and Wellness in South Lake Tahoe

Barton Health has launched a new community program in South Lake Tahoe, one that focuses on health, wellness and prevention. BWell offers services not covered by many insurances, including reduced cost lab draws, EKG tests, Lung Cancer screening and free lectures and a resource library.

Six New Bus Shelters Now Line Highway 50 Through South Lake Tahoe

You may have noticed the new bus shelters placed this summer along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe. They were installed by the Tahoe Transportation District, operator of the local South Shore Transit System. The shelters won't only come with seating and protect those waiting for buses from the elements, they also have new bike racks and bear safe trash cans.

David Foster, Sculptor, Takes us to Italy at the SLT Library

The Friends of the Library presents David Foster, international artist and sculptor specializing in traditional and contemporary fine art applications, who will share with us his life in the little Tuscan town of Pietrasanta, Italy as he follows in the footsteps of Michelangelo.

He will present a slideshow with images of the studios in which he works, the marble mountains his pieces come from, as well as the entire cultural experience of la vita italiana. This event is free and open to all.
