Livestrong, American Century give $100,000 to South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 11:41amThe holiday arrived early for 27 South Lake Tahoe non-profit organizations Thursday, Dec. 8, as $100,000 in charitable contributions was distributed on behalf of LIVESTRONG® and the American Century Championship by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.
“We’re fortunate to have the support from LIVESTRONG, NBC Sports and American Century Investments to assist to the local community,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the LTVA in a news release. “In addition to an outstanding event which attracts visitors, our 22-year partnership also helps local groups in need.”

Movie Review: 'Hugo' is Scorsese at his best and a holiday treat for all

It's Martin Scorsese's homage to film pioneer Georges Méliès, a French innovator who created much of the library of movie techniques back before World War I only to be forgotten amid the strife on combat in France. His films were largely destroyed to make such things as guitar picks.
Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows merger complete
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 11:26amThe previously announced transaction between KSL Capital Partners and JMA Ventures which joins Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows under one operating company has officially closed. This announcement affirms that skiers and riders can access Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows’ 6,000 acres, 44 lifts and over 270 trails on one lift ticket or season pass. The two resorts will be connected by convenient, complimentary shuttles that will provide transportation between the two resorts.
“Since announcing the merger, the Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley joint pass products –the Tahoe Super Pass and Tahoe Super Six, and Squaw Valley’s $50 million Renaissance, the response from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive” said Andy Wirth, Squaw Valley’s president and CEO.“The opportunity to experience these two incredible mountains, each with their own unique spirit and character, through one pass and one ticket has resonated deeply with our guests,” said Wirth. Wirth will take the helm as the president and CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, LLC, the newly formed parent company of both Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics will present an Awareness Workshop in which participants will learn how to enjoy outdoor pursuits while ensuring a sustainable future. Presenters are Mark Ardagna and Tara McCarthy.

Bona Fide Books hosts My Reading Buddy

During the hour-long meeting, elementary school-age children can each enjoy a 15-minute reading session with a canine listener. There is no charge, and age-appropriate books are provided. First come, first served.
