The 2014 "Jazz & Beyond - Carson City Music Festival" will open with a "Mad Hatter Garden Party," a ticketed event in the backyard of the Nevada Governor's Mansion, on Friday, August 1, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. The gate opens at 5:00 p.m., and the show starts at 5:30 p.m. The party features music by the Corky Bennett Trio, finger foods by Carson City Confections, wine, beer, and a raffle. The Governor's Mansion is at 606 Mountain St., Carson City, and entrance is by the Robinson St. entrance.

A candidates forum for the El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor race will be held on July 29th at 6:30 p.m. at the California Conservation Corps (CCC) Tahoe Center building in Meyers.

The forum was rescheduled from it's original date of July 22.

TahoeChamber, Tahoe Daily Tribune and Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will host the forum in anticipation of the November election in which two candidates, Kenny Curtzwiler and Sue Novasel, will campaign for the position to be vacated by current Supervisor Norma Santiago.

Opinion: Plastic bag ban or not, it's up to us to do the right thing

The City of South Lake Tahoe imposed a single use, plastic bag ban for grocery stores in the city limits in October of 2013. The original ordinance was for grocery stores to implement the new policy on January 15, 2014 and for all other retail outlets to begin on October 15. During the June 17th City Council meeting, three Council members decided that the ban on all other retail outlets should be postponed and the final vote on that will be during this week's Council meeting.

Regarded by many as the best track and field team ever, members of the 1968 Olympic team returned to the site of their high altitude training center and U.S. Olympic Men's Track & Field Trials on Friday as the location was honored with a California State Historical Marker.

A crowd of a few hundred people gathered at Echo Summit for "Return to the Summit" which honored the unique location as well as the unique time and team. There were tumultuous times in 1968 prior to the Olympics with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr and Bobby Kennedy as well as the Vietnam War.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Heavenly Unveils Summer Activities: Ropes Courses, Zip Line, Day Camp

Heavenly Mountain Resort has upped the ante on summer fun, introducing new adventures at the top of the Heavenly Gondola for Summer 2014. Summertime guests will have the opportunity to swing through the trees and fly through the air on new experiences including the Boulder Cove and Black Bear Challenge Courses, the Discovery Forest Canopy Course and the 3,300 foot-long Blue Streak zip line. On Friday, June 13, Heavenly Mountain Resort will open these expanded offerings to the public seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through September 1.

World Book Night Shares the Love of Reading in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe community was treated to 320 free books on Wednesday night as part of World Book Night.

Volunteers from Friends of the Library gave books out at beaches, bus stops, the El Dorado County Food Bank truck, recreation center, Senior Center, Juvenile Treatment Center, Tahoe Senior Plaza and various other places around town. They announced on Facebook that they were heading out, but didn't disclose locations until after the books were distributed.

"We enjoyed reaching out to others in our community by sharing a special book," said volunteer Lynne Brosch.

South Tahoe High Student Meghan Byrd Wins National Honor

For the sixth consecutive year, South Tahoe High School students have won honors in the California Fourth District Congressional Art Competition.

STHS student Meghan Bryd won the competition this year with her photograph in honor of a holocaust survivor.

Barton Skilled Nursing volunteers wear many hats. They play inspiring music, bring communion, and call bingo. Volunteers turn an ordinary birthday party into a trip down memory lane with music from the past. Musicians share ukulele, piano, and organ music with our residents. They honor our vets. Some volunteers bring in their pets to lick faces and shower our residents with love. Other groups bring church to Skilled Nursing residents every Sunday.

Too Early to Tell Success of New Trash Pick Up Times in South Lake Tahoe

Since March 3rd, trash pick up times in South Lake Tahoe have been moved to two hours later in an effort to reduce wildlife problems and clean up, according to South Tahoe Refuse, protect our unique environment.

While it's too early to tell if the later times will keep bears out of local trash, both Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care and the Bear League say they feel it will make a big difference.

Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso produced a true champion performance Monday, becoming the first American skier in history to win a medal in three straight Olympic Winter Games with her bronze in a tricky super combined event at the Rosa Khutor alpine center.

Mancuso skied into the lead in the downhill portion and then ripped up the slalom course that bumped nine skiers off course, finishing third behind gold winner German Maria Hoefl-Riesch and silver winner Austrian Nicole Hosp.

Tragedy struck at the 2012 SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe when 19 year old Alyssa Byrne became separated from her friends and died of hypothermia after falling in a snow bank after attempting to walk back to her hotel.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

In September, the Carson Valley Visitors Authority announced its nationwide search for a “storyteller on horseback.” Fifteen women answered the call and in video submissions, which ranged from a poetic ode to the Carson Valley to a distinctive pair of pink stilettos, made their case to be the area’s spokeswoman.
