LTCC opens three new art exhibits, meet the artists at community reception

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The community is warmly invited to Lake Tahoe Community College on Thursday, September 28 to enjoy three new art exhibit openings that evening. Free artist receptions will be held simultaneously from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. around LTCC’s campus, providing an opportunity to meet the artists whose work will be on display and to enjoy light refreshments with other local supporters of the arts.

LTCC vision: To be California's premier destination community college

As the world changes around South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is evolving to meet the new demands of education and the student body. As there is a decline in community college enrollment across the country, LTCC is being creative in recruitment of students to the campus and investing in not only the environment, but in removing barriers many have in getting a secondary education.

That was the message during Lake Tahoe Community College President Jeff DeFranco's first State of the College Address on Thursday.

Scholarships available for DACA application renewals at LTCC

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Thanks to the San Francisco-based non-profit Mission Asset Fund (MAF), scholarship funds are now available to cover the costs for California community college students who need to renew their Deferred Action for Childhood Arrives (DACA) status before the upcoming October 5 deadline. MAF, which has a long history of supporting Dreamers, has dedicated scholarship funds specifically to help California community college students, along with CSU and UC students, pay for the $495 DACA renewal fee.

LTCC holds State of the College address

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is holding their State of the College address on Thursday, September 13 inside the Duke Theater starting at 8:00 a.m. with a breakfast reception.

LTCC President Jeff DeFranco will discuss where the college is today and where they are headed. A LTCC Alumni Panel will follow DeFranco, sharing their experiences on the South Lake Tahoe campus. Wrapping up the event will be Dr. Victor Rios, who will talk about how to change students' lives through meaningful contact.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College joins the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley in denouncing the White House’s action on Tuesday to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

City working with promoter to keep SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe

Is SnowGlobe an event that should stay in South Lake Tahoe?

The answer is "yes" according to the City Council, but exactly how the future working and financial relationships between the City and SnowGlobe will look still needs to be worked out.

Chad Donnelly, founder of SnowGlobe, made a presentation at the SLT City Council meeting Tuesday, outlining a plan to keep the annual December 29-31 music festival in the community.

Dust kicks off smoke detector at LTCC, prompts evacuation alert

An emergency alert at Lake Tahoe Community College Tuesday morning turned out to be a false alarm.

At approximately 9:25 a.m. August 1, the alert was broadcast to evacuate the South Lake Tahoe campus immediately. A second alert advising the emergency was over quickly followed.

One of the campus's maintenance crew members was working on an air handler unit when some dust in the system system was kicked up and set off a duct smoke detector. Detectors can confuse dust with smoke.

TEDx South Lake Tahoe speaker lineup announced

After a popular, and sold out, inaugural event in 2016, TEDx South Lake Tahoe is coming back and promises to be bigger and better.

The TEDx license only allowed 100 attendees at The Loft during its first year, but after a trip the New York and a TEDx main event, local organizers were able to qualify South Lake Tahoe for a larger audience in 2017.

LTCC opens week-long Spanish Institute in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) opens up their annual Intensive Spanish Summer Institute (ISSI) on Monday, July 31, a special guest will be there as part of the opening ceremony.

Selene Barceló, Consul for Community Affairs at the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento, will speak at several of the institute's activities starting at 7:45 a.m. with the opening session at the plaza outside the campus's Roberta Mason Library.

At 9:00 a.m. she moves to the Duke Theatre where she'll make a presentation in Spanish and then in English at 10:00 a.m.

Letter to the Editor: Successful students are the "products" of LTCC

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Everyone knows what Barton Hospital does. We have all used it for one reason or another. Yet many people in our community may not fully appreciate what Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) brings to our community. On June 30, LTCC held its graduation ceremony with over 150 students getting a degree or certificate. Many will go on to a 4-year university to get a bachelor’s degree. We now know where last year’s 163 students who graduated from LTCC went.

Work on new South Lake Tahoe play fields to start mid-July

The community will soon be seeing green at the site of the South Lake Tahoe Community Playfields on Al Tahoe Blvd.

Thomas Haen Company of South Lake Tahoe, a long-time local General Engineering contractor and two local subcontractors, Ron Fuller Construction and Earth and Stone Landscape were awarded the contract by the City of South Lake Tahoe to create two fields adjacent to the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) soccer field.

Ground breaking at $5.8M Lisa Maloff University Center in South Lake Tahoe

South Tahoe High Sports Medicine students earn college credits

South Tahoe High Sports Medicine students were able to earn four college credits this year for earning their certifications in Emergency Medical Response and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, the highest CPR certification possible.

Due to a partnership with Lake Tahoe Community College, 69 Sports Medicine 1 students were able to get a head start on their college education, plus. LTCC paid for the students' certification fees through a grant.

Sierra House principal leaving Lake Tahoe for Vacaville

Ryan Galles, the principal of Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe, has announced that he is leaving Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Galles has accepted the position of Director of Elementary Education for the Vacaville Union School District (VUSD), a district with 12,000 students and 10 elementary schools.

City Council gives LTUSD $75,000 for fields; Asks they come back to consortium

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. James Tarwarter, Superintendent of Lake Tahoe Unified School District, was at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting to explain why LTUSD should receive $150,000 from the City for ballfield maintenance. He walked away with $75,000 with a strong recommendation that he join the Community Field Consortium Tarwater chose not to join in November, 2015.

Artist Erin Whitman to visit LTCC; Holding hands-on demonstration and lecture

LTCC Student-Veteran to receive car from Recycled Rides

LTCC hires Russi Egan as new VP of Administrative Services

During a special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday, Russi Egan was hired as the college's new Vice President of Administrative Services.

Egan is currently the Vice President of Administrative Services and Chief Financial Officer at Palo Verde College in Blythe, Calif. She will begin her new job at LTCC on July 1.

The position has been vacant since Jeff DeFranco became the school's new Superintendent/President in January, 2017.

Pro soccer team Reno 1868 FC to play LTCC in exhibition game Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.— Tuesday will be a historical night of soccer at Lake Tahoe Community College as the new professional soccer team, Reno 1868 FC, heads to the south shore to play an exhibition game against the college's men's soccer team. This will be the first professional soccer team to ever play in Tahoe.

On April 25, At 7:00 p.m. the teams will play under the lights at the LTCC home field. Admission is free and open to the public. Reno 1868 FC will sign autographs following the game.

LTCC students heading to renown ceramics conference

Students in the Art Club at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) are gearing up for their annual participation in the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art (CCACA) conference in Davis from April 28-30. South Tahoe High well on way to keeping accreditation

South Tahoe High School is still an accredited school. That was the message given during Tuesday's meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees as staff updated them on their ongoing efforts to hit the targets set for the next visit by Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) in March of 2018.

Several parents have voiced their concerns that students aren't getting in the colleges of their choice due to the school's status.

LTUSD and LTCC dual enrollment gives high school students college credits

A collaboration between the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and Lake Tahoe Community College District (LTCC) will soon make it possible for South Tahoe High School (STHS) students to graduate with an AA degree at the same time they get their diploma.

It all starts with an expansion to the three current dual enrollment classes this fall.

By taking these classes, STHS students receive both high school and college credit for successfully passing designated courses, at no cost, possibly saving families tens of thousands of dollars for two years of college.

LTCC and LTUSD hold joint board meeting to discuss local education

The annual joint board meeting with the Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District to discuss common goal strategies will be held on Tuesday, March 28 in the LTCC board room, L104, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

LTUSD will start off the evening with a closed session at the Education Center Board Room at 5:00 p.m. before moving over to the college. They will then reconvene their open session back at the Education Center Board Room at 7:30 p.m.

South Tahoe Greenway one step closer to reality

A 3.86 mile shared used bike trail from Van Sickle Bi-State Park to Sierra Boulevard is getting closer to becoming reality after a Memo of Understanding (MOU) has been developed between its three partners.

The first phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail was completed through the Bijou neighborhood in Summer, 2015, but the next phase needed a partnership between the City of South Lake Tahoe (City), Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) to be completed.

Liberty Utilities scholarships open to area high school and LTCC students

Liberty Utilities is once again offering academic scholarships for eligible high school and college students within its service territory which includes South Lake Tahoe, North Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas. The eight schools participating in the fifth annual scholarship program are South Tahoe High School, Loyalton High School, Douglas High School (students residing in Alpine County only), Coleville High School, North Tahoe High School, Truckee High School and Portola High School, as well as Lake Tahoe Community College.

Auditions for Godspell at Lake Tahoe Community College

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. — The smash-hit musical Godspell hits the stage at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) this summer, and auditions are now slated for March 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Duke Theatre.

Performances of Gdspell take place June 16-25, 2017.

They are looking for actors of all ages and ethnic backgrounds for this award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) and book by John Michael Tebelak.

Coyote Country Rail Jam at Lake Tahoe Community College

New Tahoe Chamber CEO brings passion for business and economic development

"I'm looking for opportunities to build strategic relationships and leverage resources, and not duplicating what we already have," Craig A. Schmidt said after being on the job for five days at the Tahoe Chamber. "That is what excites me about the South Shore."

Schmidt is the new Chief Executive Officer for the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce, a job vacant since July 1, 2016 when "B" Gorman left to develop her coaching business.

Improv brings their comedy back to South Lake Tahoe at LTCC

Eight South Tahoe High students commit to play soccer for LTCC

"Women's soccer has arrived," said Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Women's Soccer Coach Jeremy Evans as he introduced the six South Tahoe High School (STHS) athletes that will be playing for him in the fall.

"I think we will finally be there," Evans said of a team that is primed for post-season play. Not only did he recruit the six young ladies from STHS, he also is adding a Truckee player, one from Reno, a Las Vegas player who was on state championship team for four years and has 14 returnees from his 2016 team.

LTCC passes resolution supporting diversity, undocumented students

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution at its Tuesday night meeting in support of undocumented students and the benefits of diversity to LTCC’s campus and beyond. This resolution follows the release of a Statement on Diversity from LTCC’s new Superintendent/President, Jeff DeFranco, published in the wake of White House changes to immigration policy.

LTCC issues statement about diversity, immigration and Dream Act

Lake Tahoe Community College stands with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and its Board of Governors in strongly supporting the values and benefits of diversity and inclusion; not just on college campuses, but in towns and cities large and small across the country. The current White House administration’s recent executive orders regarding immigration, the building of a border wall, and its rhetoric regarding Dream Act students has caused widespread concern among California’s community college students.

More snow days announced for Monday

More schools will be having a snow day on Monday. Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High School just announced their closure. The other Douglas County Schools in the valley will be on a two-hour delayed start.

Up at Tahoe Truckee School District, they are watching snow and road conditions and will make their decision at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District on the South Shore already announced their snow day for January 23.

Incline Village schools will also be closed and all other Washoe County schools are on a two-hour delays.

Two more four-year degree programs added at Lake Tahoe Community College

A partnership between Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and Sierra Nevada College (SNC) of Incline Village has brought two more four-year degree programs to South Lake Tahoe.

This fall an undergraduate program in Global Business Management was launched, and this spring, bachelor's degree programs in psychology and education are coming to the Lake Tahoe Community College.
