Kirkwood has three lifts and 15 trails open; Mammoth is open top to bottom with 12 lifts and 37 trails open; Squaw has Gold Coast open on the upper mountain; Mt. Rose is open top to bottom. Have fun and be safe! If you are departing the Lake Tahoe Basin, buckle up, drive safely and have patience with traffic.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has several road construction projects in the Lake Tahoe area. The following is their list for the week of October 28-November 3, 2018, including alerts on special events in Apple Hill and on SR49.

SPECIAL EVENTS

With less than 40 days remaining until the November general election, U.S. House candidate Jessica Morse will be hosting town hall meetings for 4th district residents, including a stop in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, October 7.

California's 4th District stretches from the eastern Sacramento suburbs to the Sierra foothills, including Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. Morse is running against incumbent Republican Tom McClintock who, at this time, has no scheduled stops in South Lake Tahoe.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - This year marks the tenth anniversary of Lake Tahoe’s Watercraft Inspection Program. Under the program, every motorized watercraft is inspected to ensure it is clean, drained, and dry and not carrying aquatic invasive species before launching at Tahoe. Thanks to diligent boaters and watercraft inspectors, no new aquatic invasive species have been detected in Lake Tahoe since the program began 10 years ago.

Firefighers now have a containment line around three percent of the Boot Fire as 6,873 acres have burned. Fire activity moderated yesterday with little fire growth occurring. More than 570 firefighters and numerous helicopters are making headway.

12:45 p.m. update 9/6/18: The Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators have updated the acreage burned in the Boot Fire to 6,706 acres and there is a three-percent containment line.

US 395 from Walker to Bridgeport remains closed as does CA SR 108. There is a detour available through Holbrook Junction.

Firefighters have a three-percent containment line around the Boot Fire which has now burned 4,620 acres in an area along US 395 nine miles SW of Walker and 15 miles NW of Bridgeport.

9/4/18 7:30 p.m. update: Firefighters have gained a containment line around 95 percent of the Slide Fire. The total land that has burned remains at 64 acres.

8:30 p.m. update 9/3/18: The Slide Fire that started around 2:15 p.m. Sunday is now 50 percent contained and has burned 64 acres. The fire was caused after a recreational aircraft crashed one mile southeast of the Winter Creek Lodge in the Slide Bowl area of the Mt. Rose Ski Resort.

It has been confirmed that one person died in the crash. The FAA is investigating the cause of the crash.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Sierra, including the Donnell Fire area where 23,824 acres since starting on August 1. Northwest winds and low relative humidity may increase activity along the southern and eastern areas of the fire, keeping smoke away from Lake Tahoe. Concern areas include Long Valley, Haypass, Sardine, and Red Rock Meadows. The fire may also travel in a Southeast direction towards Kennedy Meadows within the Middle Fork Stanislaus River corridor. A Forest Order Closure has been issued for the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness and Spicer Lake.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.

The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Smoke from fires west of Lake Tahoe is expected to come into the basin again today, but Sunday morning is clear. Here is an update on most fires in Northern California and Western Nevada.

The Nevada Promise Scholarship began accepting applications for its second-year on Wednesday, which allows students to attend Nevada community colleges at virtually no cost.

Last year saw more than 1,300 students become eligible to receive the scholarship and attend the College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, Truckee Meadows Community College, or Western Nevada College this fall semester nearly for free.

The following is a comment in support of Preferred Alternative 2B of the Upper Truckee River Restoration and Golf Course Reconfiguration Project submitted by the League to Save Lake Tahoe to California State Parks:

Even though firefighters gained some ground Monday on the Ferguson Fire, Yosemite National Park has announced they are closing Yosemite Valley and Wawona on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at noon to all visitors due to the ongoing impacts of the fire. These closures include all hotels, campgrounds, and visitor services in Yosemite Valley and Wawona. Park visitors currently staying in park campgrounds and lodging facilities are asked to be out of these areas by noon as well. With the ongoing closure of Highway 140, park visitors can exit the park via Highways 120 and 41.

Lake Tahoe is one of the clearest lakes in the world, known around the globe for its spectacular scenery. The lake’s water clarity is one of the many attributes that make the Tahoe Basin such an amazing natural resource and a mecca for outdoor recreation.

The epic clarity of Lake Tahoe was measured at an average of 59.7 feet in 2017, a 9.5 foot drop from the previous year and 10.3 feet lower than the five-year average according to the annual report compiled by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

This measurement surpasses the previous lowest level of 64.1 feet which was recorded in 1997, but far below the record high of over 100 feet in the mid-1960s.

South Tahoe High sent off 190 graduates on Friday during ceremonies at the school's football fields, with many heading to college and others to start their careers.

An injured paraglider was rescued from a steep embankment along the Mt. Rose Highway near the Slide Mountain trailhead on Monday, May 28.

Rescue personnel from North Lake Tahoe Fire, Truckee Meadows Fire and the Washoe County Sheriff Search and Rescue team and HASTY team assisted in getting the injured person up from 200 feet down using high angle rescue methods.

Victim’s injuries are not life-threatening per fire personnel.

The Amgen Tour of California is just a week away, and since both the women's and men's races come through South Lake Tahoe this year, many cyclists can be seen training on area roads.

On Wednesday, four members of the United Heath Care (UNC) cycling team joined local comedian and radio personality Howie Nave on a bike ride to Round Hill Pines.

Howie participates in the annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, so he can ride, and the ladies of Amgen today treated him kindly on the roads, not leaving him in the dust as he joked about.
