Cyclists from far and wide are signing up for the Motherlode Century, being held Sunday May 20, 2012. It promises to be the best bicycle ride Northern California has to offer.

Conveniently staged in the foothills of the beautiful and historic Gold Country, the Motherlode offers three ride options: The Gold Dust (31 miles), The Gold Nugget (67 miles) and the Motherlode (100 miles). All riders will benefit from full SAG support, tasty aid stations, and a delicious post ride dinner on the river.

It is official. Kirkwood Mountain Resort is now officially under the umbrella of ski industry giant Vail Resorts, Inc.

The two-week event that began March 30 continues this weekend as a non-stop party full of concerts, competitions and some of the best spring ski and snowboard conditions at Lake Tahoe. OK, so it hasn't been the best snowsport season so far, but hold on, more snow is coming with storms over this weekend and we'll be able to ski off-piste without worrying about slightly hidden rock and logs. And on top of that, it's spring skiing, always the best of the year. Forget those crowds of December and January, don't recall those icy January days when the wind howled. It's been a weird ski and riding season, for sure. One indication is that Heavenly Mountain Resort is only operating the Boulder base lodge and the Boulder and North Bowl lifts on weekends. In all the years I taught at Boulder never has had a shutdown like this. Too bad because lots of locals liked Boulder as out-of-towners didn't go there very often. Thus, parking was close and runs not crowded.

A recent winter storm that blanketed Heavenly Mountain Resort with as much as three-and-a-half feet of new snow has allowed the resort to open three quarters of the mountain, including the double-black diamond, expert-only Mott Canyon. Now with 3,600 open acres, Heavenly is offering the most skiable terrain at Lake Tahoe.

Five men from the South Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley areas face fines after being cited by the U.S. Forest Service for riding snowmobiles in the Mokelumne Wilderness on the Eldorado National Forest. Snowmobiling and any kind of motorized activity is illegal in nationally-designated wilderness areas.
The riders were issued mandatory notices to appear before the federal magistrate in Sacramento.

Vail Resorts, Inc. announced Wednesday that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Kirkwood Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe, Calif., recognized by skiers and snowboarders as offering some of the best high alpine advanced terrain in North America.

After receiving 12” of new snow on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, Heavenly Mountain Resort will open Milky Way Bowl for the first time this season, giving the resort additional expert and off-piste terrain. Heavenly will have 50 percent of the resort open, totaling 2,400 acres.

Heavenly Mountain Resort teamed up with Nike Snowboarding on Saturday to host the fifth stop of the Nike Winter Chosen Tour. The slopestyle rail jam consisted of two components: a video crew competition, in which riding and filming crews enter online for a chance to travel to Austria and compete with professional riders and videographers, and the Night Jam, a freestyle slope session featuring production lighting and local and professional snowboarders competing for $5,000 in cash prizes.

Thanks to the power of the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system, Heavenly Mountain Resort was able to open East Bowl, the double-black diamond trail that leads to the resort’s California Lodge.

Spent some time skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort the other day and the snow was fine, though pretty hard at 9 a.m. but softening as the sun at Lake Tahoe came into play. Couldn't help noticing how many skiers are still using the old rotary shoulder turn yet skiing on modern, shaped skis. That's a waste of energy.
On shaped skis keep the body facing down the fall line, letting the edges do the turn. That's what today's skis are all about. The deep sidecut makes the skis turn when you put the edges in. Gotta keep the hands out front, which incidentally is crucial in avoiding ACL injury.
