Best of Lake Tahoe snowsports season coming up now; storms line up for weekend skiing
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 4:04pmOK, so it hasn't been the best snowsport season so far, but hold on, more snow is coming with storms over this weekend and we'll be able to ski off-piste without worrying about slightly hidden rock and logs. And on top of that, it's spring skiing, always the best of the year. Forget those crowds of December and January, don't recall those icy January days when the wind howled. It's spring skiing, lightly clad with plenty of sun for sitting on the lodge deck.

Plenty of snow at Lake Tahoe for spring skiing, snowboarding
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Fri, 03/09/2012 - 7:49amIt's been a weird ski and riding season, for sure. One indication is that Heavenly Mountain Resort is only operating the Boulder base lodge and the Boulder and North Bowl lifts on weekends. In all the years I taught at Boulder never has had a shutdown like this. Too bad because lots of locals liked Boulder as out-of-towners didn't go there very often. Thus, parking was close and runs not crowded.

Movie Review: 'The Vow' a romantic comedy that bounces along
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Fri, 02/17/2012 - 6:11pmThe film "The Vow," currently on view at the Heavenly Village Cinema in South Lake Tahoe, is a good bad film. The bad is the sweetness-loaded script and the apparently rock-dumb male lead, Channing Tatum, as Leo Collins. The good is co-star Rachel McAdams as Paige Collins. This is billed as a romantic comedy, ideal as a "date" outing. Maybe, but ...
Movie opens with a brief scene of now and then goes back to five years earlier when Paige and Leo exchanged vows in a yuppie-like wedding. Thus, "The Vow."

Let the edges do the work; meanwhile big Saturday at Heavenly
Submitted by Sam Bauman on Thu, 02/02/2012 - 10:09amSpent some time skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort the other day and the snow was fine, though pretty hard at 9 a.m. but softening as the sun at Lake Tahoe came into play. Couldn't help noticing how many skiers are still using the old rotary shoulder turn yet skiing on modern, shaped skis. That's a waste of energy.
On shaped skis keep the body facing down the fall line, letting the edges do the turn. That's what today's skis are all about. The deep sidecut makes the skis turn when you put the edges in. Gotta keep the hands out front, which incidentally is crucial in avoiding ACL injury.
