Mass casualty / active shooter drill held in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) held a mass casualty/active shooter drive Thursday at their training center on Rufus Allen Blvd.

Since first responders don't want to use a real event to test their skills, drills of these types are crucial to their being prepared.

Tahoe Douglas Fire, Lake Valley Fire, California Highway Patrol, Care Flight/Remsa, Cal-Star, Cal-Tahoe JPA, South Tahoe Action Team, the FBI and South Lake Tahoe Police Department all joined SLTFR and 22 volunteers in the drills.

Douglas County senior scammed out of $34,000 over 20-month period

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) recently made connections with a senior citizen through their new Caring Neighbors Program. They found the senior had been scammed out of over $34,000 over the past 20 months.

In the program, a deputy and a volunteer visit seniors to obtain needed information such as consent, next of kin and medication information. The information is beneficial in case of a future emergency involving the senior citizen.

El Dorado County fire prompts evacuations near Georgetown

8:00 p.m. update: The Sliger Fire is now 75 acres with 20 percent containment. There are no new evacuations at this time.

Over 200 homes have been evacuated this evening after a fire broke out at Sliger Mine Road and Hida Way, northwest of Georgetown.

The fire, called the Sliger Fire, broke out at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4 and is burning at a moderate rate of spread in timber south of the middle fork of the American River near the Placer County-El Dorado County border. Full air and ground resource response fighting this fire.

North Fire near Emigrant Gap at 500 acres, 10% containment

8:20 p.m. update 8/4/18: The North Fire acreage has grown to approximately 700 acres. It continues to burn in the North Fork of the American River Canyon, and area characterized by steep, rugged terrain. The Helibase has been been moved to Truckee. It remains at 10% contained.

9:00 a.m. update 9/4/18: Updated mapping has shown the North fire has burned 500 acres. Hand crews, dozers, and engines worked through the night establishing an anchor point and starting to flank the fire with handline, hose lays, and dozer line. 10 percent contained.

Motorhome leads law enforcement on chase from South Lake Tahoe to Gardnerville

A motorhome being driven recklessly through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline led law enforcement on a high-speed ride along Highway 50, over Spooner Summit and into the Carson Valley before it crashed into a building in Gardnerville, Nev.

At 10:30 p.m. Sunday, August 26, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was alerted about the 1997 Airstream motorhome speeding through South Lake Tahoe, running red lights and traveling without headlamps on. They saw it as it crossed into Nevada traveling 55 mph in a 35-mph zone when an enforcement stop was initiated.

Man drowns off shore of South Lake Tahoe

8/28/18 8:30 a.m. update: The South Lake Tahoe man who died in Lake Tahoe Monday has been identified as Robert Hill by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. The cause of death is still under investigation pending an autopsy

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Police Department's (SLTPD) Marine Unit responded to a call of a life jacket floating in the lake on Monday morning at 11:20 a.m. Upon arrival to an area off Lighthouse Shores they found there was an elderly man attached to the jacket, according to SLTPD Sgt. Travis Cabral.

Incline Village bank robbery suspect arrested

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office has announced they arrested a man who they believe was responsible for the Incline Village robbery of Wells Fargo Bank Friday.

A deputy was driving on the Mt. Rose Highway later that day and spotted the suspect and arrested him on robbery and drug possession charges.

Greg Bauer Roberts, 48, was booked into the Washoe County Jail where he is still being held as of Saturday morning. Bail has not been set.

Wells Fargo Bank in Incline Village robbed; Suspect being sought

The Incline Village branch of Wells Fargo Bank was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash at 10:09 a.m. Friday morning, August 24, 2018.

Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a robbery in progress. Upon arrival the suspect had already fled.

The Sheriff's Office and FBI are investigating and attempting to locate the suspect. They have released two photos of him, but very little information is currently available. If the suspect used a gun or fled in a vehicle has not been released.

Reward offered in "extreme" Douglas County animal abuse case

A cat suffering from years of neglect was abandoned at the Animal Shelter in Gardnerville, and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying a person of interest.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested in Carson City for alleged 3rd DUI

A 52-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested in the area of North Curry and West Spear streets for felony suspicion of third DUI, driving on a revoked license, and following too close, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Ragan Allen Stacey was arrested after deputies responded to a two vehicle crash Saturday evening. Dispatch advised the driver of one of the vehicles was walking away from the crash, and deputies were able to locate him on North Curry Street.

UPDATE: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office did not find anything pertaining to the case on the Centerville Lane parcel and have left the area. They used cadaver dogs and ground radar to search for human remains.

California man drowns in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.

The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

8:00 p.m. 8/5/18 UPDATE: SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.

Five South Lake Tahoe residents arrested after Homewood home burglarized twice

Five South Lake Tahoe residents have been arrested by the Placer County Sheriff's Office on burglary charges after a Homewood, California home was broken into twice in the past week.

After the first incident on July 24, deputies responded to Sacramento Avenue in Homewood for a reported residential burglary. The burglars had broken into a home and stole numerous items, including a Mercedes Benz that had been parked in the garage.

Purse thief sought by Douglas County Sheriff's Office

A woman who walked off with another's purse at the Raley's Grocery Store in Gardnerville is being sought for questioning by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).

On July 21 at approximately 2:00 p.m., a customer accidentally left her purse inside a cart at the cart storage area inside Raley's. Within an hour she remembers where the purse was left and returned to the store, only to find it missing.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on drug charges in Butte County

A 39-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested by the Butte County Sheriff's Office after being found with a large quantity of illegal drugs.

On July 16, 2018 at approximately 9:00 p.m., law enforcement was called about a suspicious vehicle on the Oro Quincy Highway north of the Berry Creek area. The occupant of the car, Jay Sool White, was contacted by a Butte County Sheriff's deputy who subsequently searched White's car.

Two die in single-engine plane crash near Truckee-Tahoe Airport

Two people died Tuesday after the crash of a single-engine airplane in Truckee.

Shortly before 7:40 a.m. on July 17, 2018, the single-engine piston Navion-B crashed near the Northstar golf course on the west side of Highway 267, not far from the Truckee-Tahoe Airport.

The pilot left the airport and was heading east at 7:33 a.m. and almost immediately reported engine problems and put out a May Day call. He was trying to return to the airport when the crash occurred, a mile away according to an airport spokesperson.

Suspicious car fire in Meyers

A fire destroyed a vehicle parked outside a Meyers residence early Tuesday morning. The call came in at 3:26 a.m. July 17, and Lake Valley Fire Protection District, CalFire and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) reponded.

The fire was contained to the vehicle which was parked on Zuni Street.

The incident is an active investigation on a suspicious fire, according to EDSO Sergeant Anthony Prencipe.

No other details at this point.

New deputy for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has a new deputy on board.

Dustin Clifford took the oath of office on July 2 during a ceremony with family and friends.

The new deputy was born and raised in Reno graduating from McQueen High School. After graduation he attended and graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.

Clifford enjoys the outdoors by hiking, fishing and hunting and is ready to begin his career with DCSO. He will be assigned to the Jail Division under the leadership of Captain Jim Halsey.

Two-person police team protecting South Lake Tahoe waters

A day on the lake is a dream come true for many, but for two South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers it's another day at the office. As they navigate Lake Tahoe they are looking for speeders, unsafe practices, life vests, drunk boaters and boat registrations, as well as responding to life threatening crashes and drownings.

"It's our little city out here," explained Steve O'Brien who has manned the South Lake Tahoe police boat for 17 summers.

James Fire between Genoa and Carson City burns 260 acres, at 30% containment

9:14 p.m. update: The James Loop Fire was reported at 12:45 p.m. at the James Canyon Development near Carson City, Nevada. Tonight, the fire was mapped at 260 acres and is currently 30 percent contained. The fire was caused by heavy equipment working on a new home under construction The fire burned 163 acres of private and 107 acres of Bureau of Indian Affairs lands, but threatened lands
managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The East Fork Fire Protection District was in unified command with the U.S. Forest Service.

Name released of woman found dead in Gardnerville field

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has released the name of the deceased woman found in a Gardnerville, Nevada field on July 4.

The deceased person has been identified as 56-year-old Charlene Heaphy of Dresslerville, Nevada.

This remains an active death investigation and at this time there is no indication of foul play.

UPDATE 7-5-18: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the woman found in the Gardnerville Ranchos field on July 4. She was identified as 56-year-old Charlene Heaphy of Dresslerville, Nevada.

One dead, one arrested in South Lake Tahoe shooting

UPDATE 7/2 8:15AM: The victim in Saturday's shooting has been identified as 44-year-old Christopher Kitchen of South Lake Tahoe. The suspect, 62-year-old Roy Figaro of South Lake Tahoe, is in the El Dorado County Jail and is facing murder charges.

One person has died after being shot Saturday near the Y in South Lake Tahoe.

Just before 5:30 p.m. on June 30, 2018, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the 1000 block of Julie lane after several calls were made into dispatch about shots fired.

DCSO seeks public's help in finding young suspect responsible for vandalism

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is looking for the young person responsible for causing damage at Pau Wa Lu Middle School in the Gardnerville Ranchos on June 25 at around 5:00 p.m.

The suspect is male, between 9-12 years of age with dark, collar length hair. At the time of the crime he was wearing a blue tee shirt, dark shorts and light colored athletic shoes.

What appears to be blue spray paint was found on various areas, including doors and windows throughout the inside and outside of the campus. An employee’s laptop was also spray painted beyond repair.

DCSO SWAT team and Harrah's Tahoe employees clean up homeless encampments

A group from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office SWAT team and Harrah's Tahoe recently swept an area known for homeless encampments in the forest behind both Harrah's and MontBleu.

They cleaned up make-shift campsites which contained bedding, furniture, drug paraphernalia and rubbish.

The officers issued an illegal camping citation to one person.

South Lake Tahoe domestic violence offender sentenced to five years in prison

A 31-year-old South Shore resident Corey Anthony Denbae has been convicted of felony domestic violence and sentenced to five years in state prison.

On April 17, 2018, El Dorado Sheriff Deputies responded to a report of domestic violence on Grizzly Mountain Road, but Denbae had fled the scene.

Smith Valley fire at 1,500 acres, power out to Walker/Coleville area

10:42 p.m. update: Power restored to all customers at 10:19 pm.

Multiple agencies have responded to a fire burning in Smith Valley, Nevada that has grown to 1,500 acres as of Sunday evening. It is burning in the area of Highway 208 and the Wellington Cut-Off.

There are approximately 300 firefighters, 25 engines, three helicopters, eight fixed wing and four hand crews on scene fighting fire.

Fire prompts voluntary evacuations in Carson City

UPDATE 11:09PM: A voluntary evacuation order was placed Tuesday night for the Carson Colony area off of Curry Street in South Carson City. The Voltaire Canyon area is also voluntary evacuation. Plans are in the works to open a shelter for those displaced.

UPDATE 10:54PM: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Tuesday night's fire at Voltaire Canyon was started by campers who were burning excrement and toilet paper.

There were two campers detained and were cooperative, said Furlong. There were up to eight individuals who were camping in the area who were taken off the hill.

Many area emergency personnel carry Naloxone for overdoses

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire and Lake Valley Fire medics in having their personnel carrying medication used to block the effects of opioids. Narcan (commercial name for Naloxone) can be given to persons suffering from suspected or accidental opioid overdoses at the earliest possible time to minimize overdosing.

Sheriff Ron Pierini and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office swore in a new deputy on May 21 at the Judicial Center in Minden, Nev.

Deputy Gregorio Marangi took his oath of office in the presence of family and friends, along with many employees of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Imprisoned South Lake Tahoe man to be arraigned on charges he killed his 3-week-old son

Murder charges have been filed against a South Lake Tahoe man, almost ten years after the death of his three-week old baby boy.

On November 14, 2008, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrived at a home after a call about a baby who was found unconscious. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived shortly after and transported the infant to the hospital where he was declared deceased. Both the baby's mother and father were present at the time police arrived.

77-year-old identified as man killed in Douglas County

The man who was killed by deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) after making threats to “kill the police” and hitting one of them with his car has been identified as 77-year-old Jimmy Alan Moss from Yerington, Nev.

DCSO had responded to a report of a domestic dispute involving a weapon on Shadow Lane in northern Douglas County at 9:30 p.m. May 19.
