Prescribed fire operations on Lake Tahoe's west shore near Tahoma and in Ward Canyon will resume Monday, Dec, 10. U.S. Forest Service crews expect to burn 50 acres in both locations, weather permitting. Operations are expected to continue through the week.

Fuels management crews with the U.S. Forest Service will conduct prescribed fire operations Wednesday near Grand Avenue on Lake Tahoe's west shore near Tahoe Pines. Crews expect to burn one acre, weather permitting. Operations will continue as weather and conditions allow.

Along with prescribed burns today at South Shore, the U.S. Forest Service has similar plans Wednesday near Secret Harbor on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe and in the Ward Canyon area south of Ward Creek on the west shore.
Crews expect to burn as many acres as possible before the predicted rain storm moves into the Lake Tahoe Basin. Operations in Ward Canyon are expected to last one day, weather permitting.

Prescribed fire operations in the Spring Creek area near the south end of Lake Tahoe will begin Thursday, Nov. 1. The Forest Service says crews expect to burn three acres Thursday and three acres on Friday, conditions permitting.
Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from this prescribed fire project area.

Each area is approximately one-quarter acre. On Sunday, October 28, 2012, prescribed fire operations will take place in the Timberland area of the West Shore, weather permitting.

Blame Halley’s Comet. Every year in mid-to-late October, Earth passes through a stream of dusty debris from Comet Halley, and the pre-dawn sky lights up with a pretty display of shooting stars.
"We expect to see about 25 meteors per hour when the shower peaks on Sunday morning, Oct 21st," says Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "With no Moon to spoil the show, observing conditions should be ideal."

Two commercial burglaries early Monday morning in Douglas County have authorities asking the public for help in identifying the suspects with photos provided by surveillance cameras.
The first burglary occurred at the Verizon Wireless Outlet Store on Waterloo Lane sometime around 5 a.m. Entry was made by the suspect smashing the glass of the exterior window of the store. UPDATE 8:45AM: Highway 395 has reopened with controls (pilot vehicle) so expect delays and watch for fire vehicles, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

A two-acre wildfire continued to burn overnight in the Desolation Wilderness area near the boundary of the El Dorado National Forest. It is not threatening any structures and doesn't appear to be moving at a fast clip, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck. Smoke from the fire moved into the basin.
The fire was reported Sunday evening and is located near Rubicon Lake within the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit boundaries, said Heck. A helicopter has been deployed to knock down the flames and a team of firefighters will be on the fire overnight.

South Lake Tahoe fire crews responded Tuesday night to a small brush fire, about quarter acre or less in size off of Eloise and 7th street. It was knocked down at 8:16 p.m. Firefighters who arrived reported smoke billowing with a low rate of spread and were able to get a handle on it with the fire trucks called to it. Firefighters built a "scratch line" ring around the fire and quickly knocked it down. The fire was called in at 8:10 p.m.
A Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity is in effect for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe Basin through Wednesday.

South Lake Tahoe firefighters responded to a house fire early Sunday morning in the 2100 block of Venice Drive. The fire call came in at around 11:55 p.m. and was reported to have started in the bathroom, possibly by an electrical heating lamp or device. When firefighters arrived, smoke was visible around the roof area. The fire was knocked down at 12:25 a.m.
The occupants inside the home evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Operations will take place near the corner of Al Tahoe Blvd. and Pioneer Trail. Fuels Management crews expect to complete two acres, weather and staff permitting.

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s insurance carriers have reported to the Nevada Division of Insurance (Division) that they have received around 1,100 claims as a result of the Caughlin Ranch and Washoe Drive fires. The dollar amount of these claims, mostly due to fire, wind or smoke damage is approaching $35 million.

These insurance claim estimates show the dangers of wildfire. Nevadans should take action during Nevada Wildfire Awareness Week to prepare their homes and evaluate their insurance to prepare for wildfire season.

As Californians turn their clocks forward this weekend in observance of daylight-saving time, Calfire reminds residents to replace batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms as well...

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will continue prescribed fires in several locations around the Lake Tahoe Basin beginning today. The controlled burns may take place near Meeks Bay on the West Shore, Slaughterhouse Canyon on the East Shore and near the end of Andria Drive on Kingsbury Grade. Locations and size of the operations will depend on conditions at each site. Operations may continue through the week and possibly through the weekend, weather permitting.

Smoke will be noticeable today at the north end of Emerald Bay as the U.S. Forest Service continues its prescribed fire operations. Here's the notice from the Forest Service regarding the controlled burn.

An alert neighbor helped keep a residential fire in Incline Village from spreading beyond the lone structure on Wednesday. North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District officials said the cause of the fire at 665 Country Club Drive is still being investigated. The loss has not been quantified in dollars. The neighbor reported seeing smoke at 3:40pm Jan. [...]

A day after heavy smoke from a west slope prescribed fire in the Eldorado National Forest carried into the Lake Tahoe Basin, another controlled burn is planned closer to home before the onset of winter storms, according to the U.S. Forest Service. A prescribed fire is set for Wednesday in the McKinney and Rubicon Bay areas of Lake Tahoe's west shore.
