The Drought Monitor released this week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) places 45 percent of the country in the D0-D4 categories, or abnormally dry to exceptional drought. This is a big change from 2018-19. At that time Lake Tahoe had well above average snow, but 62.6 percent of the U.S. fell into the Do-D4 categories.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A weak cold front moved over the Sierra early Sunday, making way for a dry front to move over Lake Tahoe. Expect cooler temperatures and drier conditions for much of this week. A new system is possible towards the end of next weekend.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, current indicators point to a sharp frontal boundary associated with a tight pressure gradient. It`s too far out to tease out much detail, but this system could produce colder temperatures, gusty winds, and better precipitation chances than we`ve recently seen. The biggest

Letter: Fire, safety, noise and trash concerns remain with SnowGlobe

Welcome to the ninth year summary of the SnowGlobe Music Festival. This is the first year the TRPA has done any monitoring and the event continues to violate TRPA’s pre-existing rules. We can add air pollution to the list of accomplishments for this event given the recent successful lawsuit by the Center for Environmental Health (CEH). Onsite inspections for building and fire continue to find violations (they have had violations every year) and the fireworks were moved to an open undeveloped area in the forest of Bijou Park this year.

Quick moving storm passing by Lake Tahoe Sunday; Big drop in temperatures Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Sunday a sharp cold front will rapidly push through the region, bringing strong winds and a quick burst of snow. The widespread southwest winds Sunday morning will be shifting to the northwest behind the front.

A Lake Wind Advisory is up for Lake Tahoe until 7:00 p.m. Sunday. The strongest winds are anticipated to be near and south of US-50, with US-395 possibly seeing travel restrictions for high profile vehicles.

Inversion brings unusual heavy fog to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fog is normally associated with San Francisco and the coastal cities of California, not with Lake Tahoe.

On Friday and Saturday, a strong inversion was in place at around the 7,000-7,500 foot level, compressing the molecules that normally evaporate off of the lake and keeping them trapped closer to the ground and the lake.

Inversions exist on a fairly common schedule, but the experience the past two days was different for a couple of reasons:

Sierra snowpack at 79% of February average

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted the second manual snow survey of the season at Phillips Station Thursday, and they found 40.5 inches of snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE) of 14.5 inches. The snowpack at this location is 79 percent of the February average, with the rest of the state measuring in at 73 percent of average.

The Phillips Station total is 58 percent of the seasonal average.

"It's decent but below average," said Sean de Guzman, chief of DWR’s Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Section.

Tax measure on March ballot to fund snow removal equipment on South Shore

MEYERS, Calif. - The El Dorado County Department of Transportation (DOT) is asking voters in Meyers and the county areas of South Lake Tahoe for money to replace their aging snow removal fleet and equipment.

On March 3, voters will be deciding whether or not they want to pay $60 more a year via their property taxes to fund CSA3 (from Strawberry to Meeks Bay to South Lake Tahoe City Limits). Measure M, if passed, will supply an extra $540,000 annually for the sole purpose of buying and leasing snow removal equipment. The funds could not be used for salaries, pensions or any other purpose.

Forecast: Weak system followed by above average temperatures in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A ridge of high pressure is building off the southwest coast, one that will bring light wind and warm daytime temperatures with overnight inversions ot Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Before it gets here though there is a small system moving through the area that brings a chance of rain and snow to Lake Tahoe at the beginning of the week.

Each day this week will see above-average temperatures. The average daytime high for this week is 40 with a low of 23.

The South Lake Tahoe forecast from the NWS:

Chain controls and spin-outs making for slow exit from Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Its been a standstill in Meyers Sunday morning as snow perhaps caught some people without chains on their vehicles by surprise.
