Former El Dorado County man pleads guilty in federal court in multimillion dollar fraud scheme

A former El Dorado County man pled guilty Thursday to wire fraud in connection with a multimillion dollar investment fraud scheme, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner said in a news statement.

According to court documents, between January 1, 2007 and November 31, 2011, Daniel Chartraw, 39, formerly of El Dorado County, defrauded numerous investors by falsely representing investments in mines, mining and refinery equipment, oil commodities, precious metals concentrate, and multimillion dollar certificates of deposit.

Lake Tahoe science pioneer to participate in national lecture series

EarthScope, the world’s largest earth-science program, has selected University of Nevada, Reno geophysicist and director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory Graham Kent to lecture at several universities this year as part of their annual speaker series.

Kent will lecture in the National Science Foundation-funded EarthScope Speaker Series about underwater paleoseismology techniques he pioneered at Lake Tahoe with colleague Neal Driscoll of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

For 10 years the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival has taken its viewers on a celluloid and digital tour filled with rapid-succession footage and no-holds-bar outdoor drama played out across continents, continental shelves and all points in between.
The film festival returns to Lake Tahoe, Saturday, Dec. 8, at MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa, and promises plenty of mountaintops, cliffhangers and enough high-energy entertainment between showings to ignite fervor for the New Year and its spectrum of outdoor adventure sports. These projects are consistent with the improvements identified in Heavenly's Master Plan Amendment and are intended to improve the overall quality of the visitor experience. Kirkwood opens 40th season with four feet of snow

Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its 40th anniversary season when the lifts began turning at 9 a.m. Friday, five days earlier than its originally-scheduled opening day. Kirkwood opened with one chairlift and five trails, accessing 40 total acres.
“The last two storms that have rolled through the Sierra have dropped a combined four feet of snow at Kirkwood, allowing us to open early for all our passionate skiers and riders,” said Casey Blann, general manager of Kirkwood. “This will be a great start to the 40th anniversary season at Kirkwood, and the first with Vail Resorts.”

The day before their last day, Johnny Brenan, Chris Rudolph and Jim Jack all went skiing at Stevens Pass, Wash. It was Feb. 18, one of many stormy powder days during a high-snowfall year in the Northwest. More than 12 inches of new snow had fallen overnight. Around 4 p.m., Jim, the head judge of the Freeskiing World Tour, showed up at Stevens' Foggy Goggle bar with a smile so big, you couldn't help but smile back at him.
