Squaw Valley to build gondola connected to Alpine Meadows

The consolidation of ski operations in Lake Tahoe continues with news Monday that plans are underway to install a gondola to connect Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski resorts.

The resorts, both owned by Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, reached an agreement with Troy Caldwell, the owner of the property between the base of the resorts, to build a gondola that will run about two miles.

Carson City man arrested for double-crossing cops, steals money for drug deal

A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday on multiple felony charges after allegedly agreeing to wear a wire for a drug deal and then fleeing with $850 given to him by law officers in order for him to make the transaction, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The man’s 29-year-old sister, also faces felony charges after allegedly aiding and assisting in his escape.

Tesla effect: 10 notable newcomers to Nevada commerce

Northern Nevada is on the radar of businesses seeking to relocate to the state, due in part to the much-publicized Tesla Motors' mammoth battery gigafactory under construction east of Sparks.

Thieves use bolt cutters in two high-end bike thefts in South Lake Tahoe

There were two high-end bike thefts in South Lake Tahoe city limits this week and the Police Department is issuing a warning.

One bike, a Kona ManoMano, was stolen off the back of a Tahoe Youth and Family Services board member's car as he attended an afternoon meeting at the agency's office on Fremont Avenue. His bike is described as a 27 speed Kona ManoMano, white in color with black printing. A witness saw a man walking by the parking lot with bolt cutters at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Monday, March 30. In a matter of moments the perpetrator was riding off on the bike.

Health officials favor Nevada bill to ban smoking in cars with children

The documented ill health effects from inhaling secondhand smoke were squared off against individual rights at a hearing Thursday on a bill that would ban smoking in cars while children are present.

Assembly Bill 322 by Mike Sprinkle, D-Sparks, was supported in the Judiciary Committee hearing by health advocates who argued that children should not be exposed to an adult who is smoking in a confined space such as a vehicle.

Drivers violating the law could be pulled over for the offense by police and fined $25. It would not count as a moving traffic violation.

Mild Weather allows Lake Tahoe recreation spots to open early

Beaches, parks, trailheads, campgrounds and popular Lake Tahoe viewing areas will start opening on April 1 for the 2015 season, almost two months ahead of schedule.

A mild winter has allowed the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) to start opening the popular areas but they won't be fully opened since they won't be fully staffed until closer to summer.

Teen killed in Fernley head on collision

A 19-year old Silver Springs teen was killed Sunday after the car she was driving was hit by another near Fernley High School.

At approximately 12:05 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers were called to the scene of a two vehicle head-on collision that occurred on US50 Alternate near Lyon County mile marker 11.

Mobile food bank comes to South Lake Tahoe March 25

Are you, or someone you know, in need of emergency food supplies? The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be in South Lake Tahoe to host a Mobile Food Pantry Distribution on Wednesday, March 25th, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. to bring food to those who need it most. They will be there rain or shine.

They welcome any locals who are struggling to make ends meet to come to the American Legion parking lot during that hour to receive supplemental groceries and fresh produce. The Food Bank will provide one allocation per household.

Suspected drunk driver kills South Lake Tahoe man

A 28-year old South Lake Tahoe man died after being hit head on by a suspected drunken driver on Friday night near Chiapa Drive and Highway 50 in Meyers.

David Earl Baker was a passenger in a Ford truck driven by his sister, Ginger Baker, when it was hit by a Ford Expedition driven by Jonathan R. Hooker of El Dorado Hills. Hooker was intoxicated when his vehicle crossed over painter double yellow lines according to a California Highway Patrol (CHP) press release.

A real estate investment trust that’s considering getting out of the snow business could sell more than dozen ski resorts from Maine to California that are worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

CNL Lifestyle Properties owns 16 resorts including Northstar-at-Tahoe and Sierra-at-Tahoe in California, Sunday River and Sugarloaf in Maine, Bretton Woods, Loon Mountain and Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire, Okemo Mountain in Vermont, Crested Butte in Colorado and Brighton in Utah.

Nevada gun bill makes it illegal for domestic violence convicts to own guns

A Senate committee on Friday unanimously approved a bill that would expand legal protections for justifiable homicides involving occupied vehicles, as well as make it illegal for anyone convicted of domestic violence, even a misdemeanor offense, to own a gun.

Senate Bill 175, sponsored by Majority Leader Michael Roberson, R-Henderson, was amended to clarify the justifiable homicide provisions relating to incidents such as carjackings.

Forest Service seeks input for Off-Highway Vehicle Grant

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is accepting public comment for the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Cooperative Funds grant application submitted to the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division.

The OHMVR grant provides staffing for OHV education and information, law enforcement patrols, resource and use monitoring, protection of natural and cultural resources and maintenance of OHV trails and trailheads on the LTBMU.

North Lake Tahoe driver booked in fatal DUI crash

A vehicle passenger is dead and the driver booked on suspicion of DUI in a fatal crash along Lake Tahoe's North Shore.

Killed in the crash was Daniel Koenig, 24, of Tahoe City, a passenger in Subaru Outback that crashed into a power pole about 2:20 a.m. Saturday along California 28, the California Highway Patrol said.

Koenig, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, west of Ridgewood Drive, the CHP said.

Body of missing Carson City man found near Spooner Summit

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday that a missing Carson City man, Bruce Hutter, has been found dead off of Kings Canyon Road in Douglas County.

The body of Hutter was found inside a white passenger car discovered Sunday by a couple four-wheel driving in a rugged area of Kings Canyon.

Dale Trembath said he and his wife were four-wheel driving at around 2:30 p.m. in the canyon when they decided to go down a steep area. He said he looked and saw the car that he described as a white Dodge Neon, and walked over to it.

Three suspects were arrested early Wednesday morning as they were attempting to burglarize the Tahoe Keys Liquor store in South Lake Tahoe.

Lorenzo Jackson, a 20-year old from Antioch, CA, Shayan Taghi, a 20-year old from San Ramon, CA and Ryan Mello, a 21-year old from San Lorenzo, CA were all arrested on charges stemming from the burglary.

Battle Over Tahoe Bears Gets Ugly

A Lake Tahoe woman is suing a longtime bear protection group after she says she got death threats for reporting an aggressive black bear to Nevada authorities, who then killed the animal.

Adrienne Evans, a professional mountain bike racer and high school science teacher, accuses the BEAR League of igniting an ugly social media campaign that turned into a vengeful attempt to run her and her husband out of town. She said she loves bears and wasn't trying to get the animal killed.

Lake Tahoe snowmobilers face fines if they cause resource damage

A lack of the snow in the Sierra Nevada isn't just hurting water supplies, it's also hurting vegetation around popular snowmobiling routes.

This preventable problem is being seen around the lake where snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.

The U.S. Forest Service is asking snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas. Snowmobile operators should avoid bare dirt and patchy snow and should not ride across streams or over small trees or brush.

Father and son arrested in South Lake Tahoe for weapons and drugs

A father and son were arrested in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday evening for illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and drugs in the 800 block of Tallac Avenue.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department's SWAT team and SLEDNET detectives served a high-risk warrant on the residence that resulted in the arrest of 55-year old Richard Martin and his 23-year old son Joshua Martin.

Over the last three months, investigators had been examining several different cases that were all affiliated with the Tallac Avenue address where both Martins resided.

Glenbrook crash claims life of Carson City man

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to an early morning accident on Wednesday just south of Glenbrook on Lake Tahoe's Highway 50.

According to the investigation, a maroon 2001 Jeep Wrangler driven by single occupant, 27-year old Joseph David Winters formerly of South Lake Tahoe, was traveling eastbound on US 50 in the right travel lane as he approached mile marker 3 in Douglas County.
