Carson City car accident claims life of 82 year old woman

Leatrice Drew of Dayton was killed Saturday when the car she was riding in drove off the roadway near E. Nye Lane. Her husband, 83 year old Daniel Drew, was driving the car westbound on US50 when it, for an unknown reason, the car went off the roadway and onto the dirt shoulder. He lost control and the car rolled.

The Drew vehicle landed back on its wheels in the ditch at the intersection of US50 and E. Nye Lane. It is unclear if Mr. and Mrs. Drew where wearing their seatbelts properly before the accident.

Fire danger still extremely high; bans in place

With the major forest fires burning throughout California, Oregon and Washington, it's a good time to remind everyone that there are fire restrictions in place in South Lake Tahoe.

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the U.S. Forest Service both have fire bans in place. Campfires and charcoal barbecues have been restricted to designated forest service recreation sites in the Lake Tahoe Basin since June 26, even if campers and back country hikers have a fire permit.

Hit and Run in Carson City leads to high speed chase; Driver arrested in California

A 53 year old Reno woman was arrested Tuesday on charges of suspected DUI and eluding officers after she led Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on a high speed chase into California.

Melanie Marnne-Lawson is suspected of rear ending a car in Carson City near the intersection of US 395 and Eastlake, then taking off towards Reno where the NHP spotted her. As they attempted to pull her over in South Reno, Marnne-Lawson failed to pull over for officers and took off reaching speeds in excess of 85 miles per hour along US 395.

Smoke filling Lake Tahoe Basin from fast moving Sand Fire

The smoke filling the Lake Tahoe basin is coming from the Sand Fire burning near Plymouth, CA. at the El Dorado County - Amador County line.

As of 8:15 p.m. on Saturday night, 4,000 acres have burned and the fire is 20% contained. The terrain near the fire is challenging firefighters.

There are currently 1,464 personnel on the scene. So far, five homes and seven outbuildings have burned.

Sunday's Celebrity Golf tee times

The final round of golf at Edgewood Tahoe is Sunday.

Greg Maddux, Bode Miller and David Wells start the day off on the 1st Tee at 7:50 a.m. and the leaders, Jeremy Roenick, Chad Pfeifer and Mark Rypien wrap up the start times at 10:10 a.m.

Tickets are $25 for the day and available at the gate. Parking is free at casinos in the area and along the street if spaces can be found. The old Horizon parking lot is available for parking at $15 per vehicle.

Bear and vehicle collision near Skyland on Highway 50 in Lake Tahoe

7/16/14 update: The accident occurred when 18 year old Alex Sanchez of Zephyr Cove swerved to miss a bear killed by a previous driver. Law enforcement was headed to the original accident when Sanchez came upon the bear in the road, served to miss it and flipped his 2000 Toyota. The car was totaled and Sanchez is recovering from bruises suffered from the tightening of his seat belt. The driver, from Sun Valley, NV, who hit the bear was driving a Ford Explorer and had his family in the car. Nobody sought medical attention after the accident.

DUI Checkpoints in South Lake Tahoe on Friday and Saturday

The California Highway Patrol, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff's Office will be joining forces over the holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe by conducting sobriety, car safety and driver's license checkpoints on both sides of the state line.

The California Highway Patrol will have their checkpoint in Meyers on Saturday, July 5 on U.S. Highway 50 between Pioneer Trail and State Route 89. It will be staffed by officers who are trained in the detection of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers.

Fire Restrictions Begin in Lake Tahoe - To Go Through Fire Season

Fire restrictions have gone into effect in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Campfires and charcoal barbecues will be restricted to designated recreation sites, and other fire-related activities will be prohibited until the end of fire season. “With record drought conditions in the West, agencies in both California and Nevada are anticipating increased fire activity,” said Fire Management Officer, Kit Bailey. “Fire restrictions help reduce the possibility of accidental human caused fires.”

South Lake Tahoe Police Step Up Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Enforcement

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department will conduct targeted pedestrian and bicycle safety law enforcement this summer in order to reduce accidents. They will be deploying officers on bicycles and motorcycles to educate the public.

In 2013, the South Lake Tahoe Police department conducted 42 injury traffic collision investigations that involved serious and/or fatal injuries. 10 of those collisions involved bicycles and 5 involved pedestrians.

Search Continues near Ice House Reservoir For Missing Man

UPDATE June 13, 2014 10:46 a.m. - The search for Vernon “Cody” Matthews over the last few days has not revealed any new information indicating his whereabouts. Sheriff D’Agostini is still dedicated to determining Cody’s location and search operations are continuing. Search and Rescue personnel from El Dorado, Solano, Placer and Contra Costa Counties are on scene along with personnel from the Bay Area Mountain Rescue team and the California Rescue Dog Association. A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol will also be assisting in todays search.

South Lake Tahoe's Loop Road Project Update

The US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the Loop Road Project, is halfway through an Environmental Impact Study which should be released in about nine months.

Dedication for Latest Phase of Stateline to Stateline Bike Path

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.

The second segment of the Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Shore Demonstration Project adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles. Meanwhile, the North Demonstration Project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and the first phase will connect Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.

Sand Harbor Shuttle Service in Place for Summer

There is a park and ride system for Sand Harbor in place once again for the summer of 2014.

In it's third year, the Tahoe Transportation District’s East Shore Express, the shuttle bus provides rides Incline Village to Sand Harbor. They are able to do so with a federal grant and funds gathered from the selling of Lake Tahoe License Plates.

North Lake Tahoe Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested After Pursuit in Carson City

An armed man walked into the Kings Beach branch of the Plumas Bank Friday morning, demanding money of two clerks. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect, identified as 55 year old Brent Muir of Carson City, was sighted near Sand Harbor by FBI agents responding to the robbery from South Lake Tahoe.

Seat Belts Save Lives: Deaths on the Rise For Unbelted Vehicle Occupants

Fatalities are up nationwide for unbelted vehicle occupants – the first time in five years according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In 2012, 10,335 unbelted vehicle occupants lost their lives. In Nevada, 41 unbelted vehicle occupants died last year.

Lake Tahoe Fuelwood Permits Go On Sale May 19

Fuelwood permits in both South and North Lake Tahoe go on sale next week. They'll start selling permits at the SLT office on Monday, May 19 and the NLT office on Wednesday, May 21.

Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will sell the permits until November 14. The last day to cut wood is November 19, 2014.

Couple Traveling from South Lake Tahoe to So.Cal Caught with 64 Pounds of Pot, Cocaine

More than 64 pounds of marijuana was seized last Tuesday from a couple heading down US 395 from South Lake Tahoe to Rancho Cucamonga last Tuesday, according to reports by the San Francisco Chronicle and the Record Courier.

Mono County Deputies stopped the suspects near Bridgeport, CA. They were identified as driver Mark Bishop, 55, of Claremont, CA, and Heather Davis, 25, of Alta Loma, CA.

Motorcyclist Safety Encouraged in Nevada

Fifty-three motorcyclists died on Nevada roadways in 2013, surpassing the previous year’s number of fatalities by 39 percent, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval proclaimed May 2014 as Motorcycle Safety Month, focusing on the motorcycle as an important form of transportation, and reminding its riders and all motorists of important safety guidelines.

South Lake Tahoe Community Input Sought for Wildfire Protection Plan

Living in a forest gives great benefits, but it also carries with it the risk of forest fires.

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for South Lake Tahoe is being developed jointly by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

The community is being asked to complete a survey which will help the agencies prepare the CWPP. This will enable the creation of a plan on how the south shore will reduce it's risk of wildfire by identifying strategic sites and methods for fuel reduction projects.

Sheriff's Office Asks For Public's Help in Finding Missing Lake Tahoe Man

5/7/14 8 am update: Mr. Morris has been located.

Donald Morris, Jr. hasn't been seen since April 20 and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public’s help in locating the missing 55 year old man.

Morris, who lives in the Round Hill neighborhood on the Nevada side of South Lake Tahoe, was last seen by his landlord.

His vehicle is at the residence.

The 6'4" man weighs 225 pounds, has green eyes and brown hair. It is unknown what clothing he was wearing when last seen.

South Lake Tahoe Jewelry Store Heist by Four Masked Men

A brazen early morning burglary at Simpson's Jewelers in South Lake Tahoe netted four masked men thousands of dollars worth of merchandise on Tuesday.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is searching for the four men who entered the store at 4:30 a.m. using a sledgehammer, grabbed numerous pieces of jewelry from the showcases and then fled in a waiting vehicle.

Man Dies After Car Plummets 80 Feet in Zephyr Heights

5/5/14 Update: The Douglas County Sheriff's Department has released the name of the man killed in Friday's accident. The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 55 year old Jeffrey Alan Davis of Zephyr Cove, NV. The cause of death has been listed as blunt force trauma due to a motor vehicle incident. The incident is still under investigation as to what caused the vehicle to travel through the back of the garage.

A Zephyr Heights man died Friday when the car he was parking plunged down an 80 foot hill.

Military Set to Receive Free Tickets to American Century Celebrity Golf

All active duty, reservists, National Guard and veterans will receive complimentary tickets to the 25th Annual American Celebrity Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe July 15-20.

The free tickets are being offered in appreciation of their service to the country.

SLT DMV Reschedules Remodeling; Closing For Two Days

The South Lake Tahoe office of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was scheduled to close last month for renovations, but due to stormy weather they postponed the project. The DMV announced today that they will be closing the office for two days in May to replace the carpet.

They are alerting local customers that their office, located at 3344 Lake Tahoe Blvd #B, will be closing for renovations on Friday, May 9, 2014, at 12 p.m.

Free Driver Safety Class Offered by the CHP

Start Smart is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. The program was created in an effort to preemptively reduce the incidence of teen injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions.

1 p.m. Thursday - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and East Fork Fire and Paramedics are responding to a motor vehicle accident on SR 207/Kingsbury Grade halfway way down on the Valley Side.

Residents and commuters are asked to use an alternate route at this time.

Highway 50 Car Accident Claims Life of Dayton Teenager

4:55 pm update - It has just been reported by the Washoe County Coroner's Office that a second victim in the accident has died. Munoz passed away Wednesday afternoon.

An accident on Tuesday between a car and a big rig on Highway 50 near Dayton, NV has claimed the life of 18 year old David Arroyo Lamas.

Over $550,000 Awarded by TRPA to Lake Tahoe Organizations

"On Our Way" grants totaling over $550,000 were awarded this week by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). Six projects that aim at sustainability and improved mobility options around Lake Tahoe will now be able to move forward due to the grants.

Mobile Food Pantry to Distribute Food in South Lake Tahoe on April 23rd

The El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe to distribute emergency supplemental groceries to those who need it most on Wednesday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The mobile pantry will be in the parking lot of the American Legion Hall at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd to help struggling families make ends meet. There will be one allocation per household.

South Lake Tahoe Beaches and Parks Begin to Open

The temperatures are rising in South Lake Tahoe and residents and visitors are spending more time outdoors.

The U.S. Forest Service announced Monday that they will be opening recreation areas early. Last year's warm temperatures in April and May brought out people who wanted to enjoy the parks and beaches, only to find them still closed.

Here is a list of opening dates:

Inspiration Point, Logan Shoals, Chimney Beach, and Secret Harbor are opening on April 21.

Sawmill Pond and the Sandpit OHV areas open May 1.

Baldwin Beach and Nevada Beach and Campground open May 9.
