Motel and surrounding property could be demolished to make way for new project

The Knights Inn could be purchased by the City of South Lake Tahoe for $6 million should a grant be awarded them by the California Tahoe Conservancy. If that happens, the City would purchase, and then demolish, the motel located on Highway 50 near Ski Run Boulevard to make way for a new environmental and retail project.

There is grant money available through the CTC which the City will apply for. The funds come from the state's Proposition 1 Water Bond which was approved by voters in 2014 to authorize $7.545 billion in general obligation bonds for water projects.

Barton Health joins successful, cutting-edge federal initiative

Barton Health was selected as one of 100 new Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), providing Medicare beneficiaries with access to high-quality, coordinated care across the United States, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced. That brings the total to 434 Shared Savings Program ACOs serving over 7.7 million beneficiaries.

Lake Tahoe native returns to open chiropractic clinic

Dr. Chris Pavich, who was born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, has returned to his hometown to open Kingsbury Chiropractic.

After attending the University of Nevada, Reno and earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life West Chiropractic College, Dr. Pavich opened his office located at 276 Kingsbury Grade #1050 in Stateline.

He will be celebrating the new office with a Tahoe Chamber ribbon cutting event on January 28, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. The Grand Opening is from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Pavich is the grandson of Sierra Ski Ranch founder Vern Sprock.

South Lake Tahoe woman facing brain cancer with friends, family and hugs

"I will not let cancer define who I am. Cancer is not going to be my story."

Those powerful words come from South Lake Tahoe local Krista Kline Carson.

The 1989 South Tahoe High graduate, wife, mother and wellness coordinator for Barton University, is battling cancer after a tumor removed from her brain was found to be Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the fastest growing brain cancers. On Monday, January 18 she begins a six week regime of radiation and chemotherapy.

Todd Moss promoted to Tahoe Douglas Fire Battalion/EMS Chief

Todd Moss has been promoted to Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Battalion Chief. The South Tahoe High graduate has been with the department since 1998 when he started at a firefighter/paramedic.

In his new capacity, Moss will be responsible for the day to day operations for A Shift. Moss will also serve as the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chief and Custodian of Records. Chief Moss will be the NV PERS Chief Officer Representative, a member of the Employee Benefits Committee and he will oversee the GASB 45 and 68 compliance requirements.

Community participates in first meeting on new SLT Recreation Center

Almost 50 people attended the first of four community meetings to discuss what the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center will provide, how it will look and function. New Mayor Wendy David and Mayor Pro Tem Austin Sass were at the meeting long with members of the Planning Commission, Park and Recreation Commission, and other citizens.

Barton Wellness Lecture: Prevention of Knee Injuries

Two of Barton Health's certified athletic trainers, Andy Borah, ATC and Jeremy Vandehurst, ATC, will also lead participants in exercises to get the winter season going.

Barton Health selects new Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Rhonda Sneeringer has been promoted to Barton Health's Chief Medical Officer, replacing Dr. Clint Purvance who is the hospital's new President/CEO.

She will start her new job November 1.

Dr. Sneeringer has been a pediatric and adult hospitalist at Barton for the past three years. She currently serves as the Vice Chief of Staff.

"Dr. Sneeringer has shown commitment to quality and patient-centered care" said retiring CEO John Williams. "This commitment, coupled with her enthusiasm, will help continue our efforts to make Barton Health a community leader in health and wellness."

Two million dollars worth of cannabis confiscated in drug bust

A five month long investigation into the Highlands Health and Wellness marijuana dispensary in Shingle Springs uncovered what authorities say was a multi-million dollar criminal operation.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) centered their investigation on tax evasion, money laundering, conspiracy and the commercial distribution of marijuana for profit.

Work to begin on the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence

The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence plans have been approved, and construction preparation for the parking garage will begin this month.

The Center of Excellence will expand orthopedic, sports performance, and wellness services on the Barton Health campus. Individuals will work with a health navigator and a team of medical providers to develop and implement a customized care plan that integrates health, fitness, nutrition, and medical expertise.

South Lake Tahoe community coming together for fire victims

The South Lake Tahoe community is doing what they do best, helping out others when needed.

With the Butte Fire forcing hundreds out of their homes while destroying over a hundred of them, and burning tens of thousands of acres, people in that community are in need of assistance.

Dr. Clint Purvance named new Barton Health President and CEO

Dr. Clint Purvance will be taking over the helm at Barton Health on November 1, replacing the retiring John Williams who will retire in early 2016 after nine years with Barton Health.

Dr. Purvance has served as Chief Medical Officer for Barton Health for the past eight years. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and has practiced medicine at Barton Memorial Hospital since 1999.

The South Lake Tahoe Rite Aid store is undergoing a major remodel along with about 450 other locations that will bring in changes, including a Thrifty Ice Cream shop and wellness center.

Barton Health employee recognized as Language Access Champion

Access to health care can be difficult in a small community, especially if you do not speak the same language.

At Barton Health, Language Access Coordinator Tracy Young, RN, CMI has set out to improve the patient experience for all patients, regardless of the language they speak. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed and on June 5, the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) recognized Young as one of three Language Access Champions.

County responds to search warrant served at Tahoe Wellness Cooperative

Search warrants were served on Monday at five locations related to Tahoe Wellness Cooperative (TWC) and its owner Cody Bass. Staff from eight agencies spent hours at the South Lake Tahoe medical marijuana dispensary, pulling out boxes and containers of cannabis and records.

Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and owner's home raided Monday

A large team made up of members from multiple agencies served a search warrant on both the Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and owner Cody Bass's South Lake Tahoe home early Monday morning.

Agents from the Franchise Tax Board (FTB), Board of Equalization, Department of Insurance, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, and El Dorado County Sheriff's Department (EDCSO) were on scene at the co-op according to Tami Grimes, Information Officer with the FTB in Sacramento.

"The contents of the search warrant are sealed," said Grimes.

Barton Health announces the passing of Dr. Paul J. Fry II

On behalf of the entire Barton family, I wish to express my deepest condolences to the Fry family on the passing of Dr. Paul J. Fry, II.

Dr. Fry made significant contributions to the health and wellness of our community, and his impact has improved the lives of many.

"Papa Fry," as he was known by many members of the community, was a beloved orthopedic physician in Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley for nearly 50 years. He opened Tahoe Fracture Clinic in 1964, and propelled the orthopedic program to a nationally recognized level.

$10 million gift presented for Barton Wellness and Sports Performance Center

South Lake Tahoe resident Lisa Maloff presented a $10 million check to the Barton Foundation on Wednesday night for the building of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence. The donation was made in memory of her husband Robert, who co-owned and operated the Lake Tahoe Inn and Timber Cove Lodge.

Mental Health Forum focuses on unmet needs of the community

The facts are startling. El Dorado County has twice the number of suicides than the state average. El Dorado County has 2.5 times the state average of maternity mental issues. The domestic violence rate in El Dorado County is 1.5 times higher than the state average. More people are living in the county with mental issues than ever before.

A day long forum of mental health care providers, agencies, medical professionals and other community members was held in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday in order to find what needs are being met, and unmet, in the area.

Community fitness challenge being held at SLT Recreation Center

Looking for some incentive to start getting more exercise? There is a new challenge program being offered called the Monthly Wellness Challenge where community members will compete for a monthly certificate and gift package.

The month of March is called 'Sweat Sessions' and will track the number of hours particpants spend in the Recreation Center's weight room. After paying the daily use fee, participants will track the amount of time spent in the weight room from March 1 to March 31. Sessions are tracked in 30 minute intervals.

Barton receives $10 million donation to build a sports and wellness center

Just a few months after she donated $5 million to Lake Tahoe Community College, Lisa Maloff has made another large donation in honor of her late husband, Robert Maloff.

Barton Memorial Hospital is the latest recipient of Maloff's generosity. She made a $10 million gift to fund the building of a health and sports performance center on the Barton Memorial Hospital campus. The new center will be called the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence.

In January 2015, new studies in the Journal of American College of Cardiology and JAMA Internal Medicine discussed heart disease. Some findings are familiar: poor diet, an inactive lifestyle, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, and obesity are all linked to heart disease. New App and on-line tool helps find Girl Scout cookie sales in South Lake Tahoe

Admit it, you've been waiting for a box of Thin Mints or Caramel Delights. Right? If not those two flavors, what is your favorite?

South Lake Tahoe Girl Scouts were spotted at several locations around town on Friday, selling their famous cookies. The girls selling from their table in front of the Bijou Safeway sold over 130 boxes in just their first couple of hours.

A tradition since 1917, girls growing through the ranks of Brownies, Cadettes and Girl Scouts have had the job of selling cookies annually to help raise money for their troups.

Raley's stores will no longer sell tobacco products

Raley's announced Friday it will no longer sell tobacco products at its stores in an effort to raise awareness about health and wellness.

The grocery store chain has decided to remove tobacco products from its stores and already stopped ordering tobacco products earlier this month, according to Raley's spokesperson Chelsea Minor.

"This is not a decision that we've taken lightly," Minor said, in a released statement. "At Raley's, we are committed to infusing life with health and happiness, and removing tobacco products is another example of that commitment."

Barton Health seeks feedback on health needs in the community

The next time your home phone rings, it may be about your health.

Barton Health is currently conducting a Community Health Needs Assessment survey by phone and needs input from South Lake Tahoe residents.

The Assessment is completed every three years and the community’s feedback provides valuable insight about local health and wellness issues. The results will guide Barton Health and other local health and human service agencies on what is considered the community's most pressing health needs.
