By using the Self-Determination Theory, we identify three key components of motivation to implement a routine and encourage a thriving athlete: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Column: Give your immunity a leg up

The COVID-19 pandemic put a spotlight on our immune systems—a complex collection of cells and compounds that defend our bodies against infection.

While vaccines are a proven first line of defense, we can implement a one-two punch approach and reinforce our natural defense system with a diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Including foods in your daily routine that are packed with the following nutrients may improve your overall health and resistance to illness.

Column: Tune your body for winter sports

Winter is upon us in Tahoe, and while the weather outside may look frightful, it makes the mountains so delightful! With resorts open and the snowpack building in the backcountry, the excitement continues to grow among winter enthusiasts. And much like you tune your boards/skis and change the batteries of your avalanche beacon, it’s key to also pay attention to your most important piece of equipment… YOU!

A few tips to keep you going all season and beyond:

Column: Ankle injury can be prevented with exercise, management

The feet and ankles, supporting the weight of the rest of your body, are prime targets for painful injuries. From broken bones to frostbite, you're at extra risk for foot and ankle injuries during winter. With some management and exercises, many can be prevented.

Guarding against injury is best accomplished by increasing both flexibility and strength in the ankle and foot. Target the muscles that support your ankles to protect your joints by strength-training two or three times a week on alternating days and always after you've warmed up.

Column: Are you mentally prepared for ski season?

There's more to preparing for the slopes than getting in shape.

Physical fitness has a lot to do with your ability to enjoy ski season. But your mental fitness is just as important. Hitting the slopes after recovering from an injury or simply pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone in challenging terrain can create plenty of barriers to a fun day in the snow. As you tune up your gear and work on your cardio for the season ahead, consider your mental preparation as well. It will help you avoid getting stuck in your head when it comes to having fun on the mountain.
