Douglas County School Board agenda: Discussion of superintendent contract, $32K legal fees, leaving NASB

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School Board will hold its next regular meeting on Tuesday, February 13 at 4 p.m. in the Douglas High School Media Room.

On the consent agenda to be approved are the bills from the District's legal firm, Joey Gilbert Law. The January invoices total $32,618.61, and with the $39,958.11 invoice approved last month, the firm's bills since being hired in July are now over $242,000.

Last month, the board had to raise its legal services budget from $123,050 per year to $450,000 for one year, an increase of $326,950 or 266 percent. If billing goes as it has been, that increase may not be enough.

Four members of the School Board have expressed the desire to be the only county in Nevada to not be a part of the Nevada Association of School Boards (NASB). If that happens, Douglas County may become an "island in the state."

The executive director and board president from NASB are planning on attending. As South Tahoe Now reported last month, Douglas County board members had never reached out to NASB or told them of their concerns with speakers at its annual conference. NASB advocates for elected school boards, they provide best practices, good governance, professional development, and open meeting law and other training. They also mentor school boards.

The newly selected superintendent's contract is also stated to be discussed and possibly approved, but there is no backup on the agenda.

Another agenda item is "Legal Counsel Presentation of its Role as General Counsel and Contractual Obligations SG-G." It states Joey Gilbert Law will present to the Board its role as General Counsel and contractual obligations.
