The South Lake Tahoe City Council held a special closed session meeting on Monday to discuss matters surrounding City Manager Nancy Kerry.
The over two-hour meeting concluded with no reportable action, according to City Council.
"We will be providing no further comment," they said.
On Wednesday, February 7, 2018, the South Lake Tahoe City Council placed Kerry on indefinite leave with no further comment. Since that time there have been public comments both supporting, and not supporting, Kerry in her performance after the last 10 years she's been with the City. Kerry has been City Manager for over five of those years and has always received very positive employment reviews.
In October, 2017, Mary Egan and Municipal Resource Group LLC were hired to complete "a leadership assessment project to include in person interviews with the City Manager, Police Chief, Fire Chief, Planning Director, Finance Director, Public Works Director, City Clerk, Interim City Attorney and all five members of the City Council." Per their contract, Egan was to be paid $250 per hour, up to $10,000, to evaluate "management and communication strengths and areas for
development, team effectiveness and cohesion, succession planning, and other relevant chief executive leadership topics."
Egan's letter to City Attorney Nira Doherty said she'd conduct those interviews with the promise of anonymity with their names being left out of her report.
The City Council placed Kerry on leave after Egan's report was presented to Council, but since it was in closed session what was said in that meeting is not available.
According to Doherty, the City has legal obligations to comply with: Government and municipal codes they must follow and their procedures must run parallel to each other. She said they must be complied with before there can be any change in someone's employment status can take place.
As of today, Nancy Kerry is still the City's City Manager, still on payroll and still on leave. Nobody has been in contact with her to update her on her status.
Fire Chief Jeff Meston has taken the roll of acting City Manager while she is out of the office.
