Paid parking proposal for Stateline area: Public meeting next week

Event Date:
February 20, 2019 - 6:00pm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There's no question, South Lake Tahoe needs more public parking areas in town, especially near Stateline and the Heavenly Village.

During last week's City Council meeting, Police Chief Brian Uhler made a presentation with his ideas for adding 57 new parking spots around the village utilizing the surplus kiosks the city has on hand.

The City wants to get feedback from the proposal during a public meeting on Wednesday, February 20 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the Grand Residences by Marriott 2nd floor meeting room. They have already been talking to some of the businesses in the area and, according to Uhler, have voiced preliminary support of the proposed parking additions.

The paid-parking would be added in the public right-of-way along Bellamy Court and Heavenly Village Way. Adding the spaces would cost around $200,000 for kiosk installation, restriping, signage, and paving. would pay for themselves in approximately two years through parking fees. Projected revenue from the paid parking kiosks is about $102,000 annually. Expenses each year are estimated at $13,980 which would cover the connection to an online parking payment system and maintenance of the kiosks and striping on roadways.

“The proposed parking expansion represents a cost-effective approach to make at least a small improvement in parking availability in the Heavenly Village area, and will eventually result in additional annual revenue for the City,” said City Manager Frank Rush.

The Marriott is located at 1001 Heavenly Village Way. There will be free parking available for the meeting in the upper lot of the Village Center at the corner of Heavenly Village Way and Montreal.
