South Lake Tahoe home one of top money generators in nation with Airbnb

Airbnb is an online marketplace for vacation rentals, apartment rentals, hostel and hotel stays that serves 65,000 cities in 191 countries with their over 3,000,000 lodging listings.

59 of those made over $200,000 last year for the owners and one of those is in South Lake Tahoe.

Formed in 2008 in San Francisco, the company has created a whole new type of traveler, ones who can experience a community as if they lived there, getting them out of hotels and into homes.

In South Lake Tahoe, the homes that are rented as short-term vacation rentals has often pitted homeowners against neighbors.

According to a recent report by the Airbnb analytics company Airdna, 76 percent of the South Lake Tahoe area homes listed on Airbnb are rented a total of 1-3 months per year, with 18.8 percent rented 4-6 months and just .5 percent at 10-12 months.

Their report is only concerned with properties listed on their website and doesn't include those rented on VRBO or other travel websites.

A large 6-bedroom home with an indoor pool near Heavenly Mountain Resort earned $219,780 last year. This home is one of the highest-earning Airbnb properties in the nation according to the report. Taxed at 12 percent, the transient occupancy tax (TOT) on that income would be $26,373, and that is paid to the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Also generated from vacation homes are incomes earned by cleaning staff as well as those who provide hot tub, pool and general maintenance. This home at Heavenly charges $425 a stay in cleaning costs.
