Top cycling teams heading to South Lake Tahoe for Amgen TOC

All eyes will be on South Lake Tahoe this May as top women and men cyclists from around the world race through the mountains during the annual Amgen Tour of California (TOC).

The top cycling teams from the U.S., Switzerland, Germany and Belgium are now confirmed to race the 645 miles of Amgen for men, including BMC Racing Team ,Team Sky, Bora–Hansgrohe and Team Katusha–Alpecin.

For the women's Amgen race, stars from Canyon/Sram, Boels-Dolmans, TWENTY20 Pro Cycling and UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team will be part of the 187 miles, three-stage race including a route around South Lake Tahoe.

The 2018 edition of America’s premier cycling stage race for men will cover 645 miles of roadways, highways and coastlines during seven stages from Long Beach to Sacramento May 13-19 while the Amgen Tour of California Women's Race empowered with SRAM will run concurrently May 17-19.

Both races will be in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, May 18.

The women's 70-mile stage will start at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, head out Pioneer Trail to State Route 89, over Luther Pass, down State Route 88 to Woodfords, a circle through Diamond Valley, up, and down, Kingsbury Grade and back to the starting point. Uber climber Katie Hall is expected to return to defend her SLT stage title. In the past the women racers stayed on the South Shore for a few days, but their TOC race has them starting in Long Beach

For the men, the TOC starts in Long Beach on May 13. Cyclists make their way up the state. Their stage 6 starts in Folsom May 18 on the new Johnny Cash Trail, then they head up Highway 50 through Placerville and then turn onto the Mormon Immigrant Trail to State Route 88, over the Carson Pass, down into Woodfords, over to Kingsbury Grade, down into Lake Tahoe and over to Heavenly.

In addition to the powerhouse sprinters previously announced – Peter Sagan (BORA-hansgrohe), Marcel Kittel (KATUSHA ALPECIN), Mark Cavendish (Team Dimension Data) – the 2018 Amgen Tour of California will feature a world-class peloton of World and National Champions, Olympic medalists and Tour de France veteran cyclists including:
• Sagan’s teammate Rafal Majka, who holds three Tour de France stage wins and two King of the Mountain titles there, as well as a Stage 2 win at the 2017 California race
• Tony Gallopin (AG2R La Mondiale), a 2014 Tour de France stage winner, who claimed the Yellow Jersey for a day
• Sacramento, Calif.-area resident Nielson Powless (LottoNL-Jumbo), the 2016 Amgen Tour of California Best Young Rider
• American all-arounder Ian Boswell (KATUSHA ALPECIN), who placed 5th overall in last year’s race
• Northern California rider Peter Stetina (Trek-Segafredo), who placed 2nd on the Gibraltar stage in 2016
• Young Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-SCOTT), who placed 2nd at the recent Milan—San Remo classic

Three of the current top-five UCI ranked teams will compete in the three-day women’s competition, which will kick off May 17 in Elk Grove, Calif. UnitedHealthcare’s Katie Hall (Oakland, Calif.), who claimed Stage 2 last year in South Lake Tahoe, is expected to return to the world-class peloton, as is three-time National Champion and 2016 race champion Megan Guarnier (San Mateo, Calif.) with the USA Cycling National Team. Canyon//SRAM is likely to mount an early race favorite Kasia Niewiadoma, who is stacking up early season results, and Ventura, Calif. native Alexis Ryan. Phenom Chloé Dygert is likely to race with TWENTY20 Pro Cycling p/b Sho-Air along with San Diego native Jennifer Valente, who together won silver in the 2016 Olympic team pursuit. Tustin, Calif.-based Coryn Rivera
(Team Sunweb), who blazed to a Stage 3 victory last year, plans to return on the heels of her historic Tour of Flanders win earlier this spring.
