Letter to the Editor: Vote Yes on Measure L

I have been part of the Community since 1989 and am now a permanent resident. The South Lake Tahoe Library does more than just books and banks of computers, our library is a place where people gather to explore, interact, and imagine. It is a place where people come to know themselves and their communities. People go to the Library looking for information and find each other there.

In addition, our library provides access to the arts for all, not just those who can afford them. Despite the rising costs of concert and theater tickets, our library events (including concerts, author visits, and gallery displays) are offered free of charge, enabling people of any income level to attend.

A library serves as the “People’s University.” In a time when education is increasingly expensive, the Library provides information and educational opportunities for free, regardless of their socioeconomic status. It is an important partner in child development and through its collections, programs, and physical spaces, children learn to share, to be engaged in the communities, to participate in the arts, and to explore.

Our library provides important business resources, especially for small local businesses. Libraries have a long history of serving local entrepreneurs and businesses. It also provides access to non-mainstream points of view and gives voice to local artists. The library provides collections and services that represent various points of view. Local authors, such as myself, are given the opportunity to promote and make their new books available.

The best part is that it is all free to the public.“VOTE YES ON MEASURE L,” it is good for all people of all ages.
