New roads, campsites and building relocation at Camp Richardson

Work on the second phase of the new campground and vehicle circulation plan at Camp Richardson Resort will continue beginning Monday, May 2, 2016 and last for approximately three months. Officially named the Camp Richardson Resort Campground and Vehicle Circulation Best Management Practices (BMPs) Retrofit, the result will allow the resort to meet current standards for water quality protection and increase universal accessibility to the area's activities.

Last year, the campground on the north side of Highway 89 was closed to put in water quality projects, and now its time for the campground on the south side.

The U.S. Forest Service project will relocate campsites and roads from sensitive stream environment zone (SEZ) areas, define and pave roadways and campsite spurs, manage on-site storm water runoff with BMPs, relocate a portion of the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path away from the highway shoulder and create a new campground entrance. It will also reduce congestion along Highway 89 at Camp Richardson Resort by improving intersections and parking, and upgrade resort parking with reconfigured and improved day use parking. Public restrooms will also be added.

The annual Renaissance Fair has been canceled for 2016 due to the construction. Event planners decided they couldn't relocate for the year due to their needs for space for josting and other horse events as well as camping spots for participants.

Planning for this project has been coordinated with Caltrans, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and other stakeholders and is consistent with the National Environmental Policy Act decision signed by the LTBMU Forest Supervisor in September 2013.
