Chain controls go up in Sierra as Winter Weather Advisory issued

Lake Tahoe is seeing the winter that keeps on giving into spring. It has been snowing in South Lake Tahoe since about 3:00 p.m. and conditions on area roads are not good for travelers over the Sierra.

Chains are now required on all vehicle except those with 4WD and snow tires on all four tires from Twin Bridges to Meyers on Highway 50. On the Nevada side, chains or snow tires are required on Highway 50 from Glenbrook to Spooner Summit, on SR28 from junction with Highway 50 to Incline Village and on the Mt. Rose Highway from mile post 4.9 to mile post 12.8. Chains or snow tires are also required on SR207 Kingsbury Grade.

Chains are now required on all vehicle except those with 4WD and snow tires on all four tires over Luther Pass on SR89.

The California Highway Patrol is reporting very slick conditions over Echo Summit and vehicles traveling before the chain controls went up are currently stuck near the top. Tow trucks are on their way but expect delays.

Vehicles are now stuck on SR89 near Emerald Bay and on Luther Pass.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until midnight Saturday. The National Weather Service says there will be up to 3 inches near lake level, 3 to 6 inches at Spooner Summit, and 6 to 10 inches near Mt Rose.
