Edwin Atwood Winslow ~ March 5, 1958 – May 10, 2023

Edwin Atwood Winslow of South Lake Tahoe passed away on May 10, 2023. He was born to Dorothy Jean Cramblett and Edwin Winslow Sr. on March 5, 1958, in Stockton, Calif. He moved to South Lake Tahoe as a young boy and made Lake Tahoe his home for 55 years, making him a docent of Tahoe, where he would take family and friends on tours. He could name every landmark and knew all the special places to take them. He attended Tahoe Valley Elementary School, South Tahoe Middle School, and graduated from South Tahoe High School (STHS) in 1976.

He was incredibly proud that all three of his children graduated from STHS -Jason (‘08), Christian (‘10), and Molly (‘22). He was a long-time local, enjoying all that Tahoe had to offer. He loved skiing, fishing, gardening, biking, hiking, camping, jumping in the lake, skipping rocks, and bird-watching.

Edwin met the love of his life Danette in the summer of 1986. They were married in 1988 at St, Theresa Church with a reception at Valhalla. Together they built a beautiful life and welcomed three children, whom he cherished as his greatest achievement and was always present for. He found his greatest joy in watching his kids play sports and never missed a game of baseball, soccer, basketball, golf, or a dance recital. He also took up many coaching opportunities to further his commitment to his children.

Edwin worked his way up from pot washer in the Sage Room to the youngest sous chef in Harrah’s history. When he was a garde manger chef he learned the art of fruit carvings, tallow carvings, chocolate carvings, charcuterie boards, and had a special affinity for ice carving. He worked under his beloved mentor, Swiss Chef Otto Helfenstein, a true master of the craft. He received many awards and accolades for his craft in both food and ice.
Over the last 30 years, Edwin had carved thousands of ice sculptures, ranging from cocktail bars and pirate ships displaying shrimp cocktails, to branded ice luges and larger-than-life animals. At his peak, Winslow was carving nearly 350 sculptures a year, carving for celebrities like Phyliss Diller, Johnny Mosely, and Joe Montana, to name a few. In the relatively small community of ice sculptors, Winslow quickly rose to the top, traveling to Asia, Europe, Canada, and across the United States for competitions, taking 2nd place in the World Ice Art Competition in Fairbanks, Alaska in 2017. His work appeared in Rolling Stone Magazine. Tahoe Magazine, The Entertainer, the Tahoe Daily Tribune, Tahoe TV, a documentary on National Geographic, and various news outlets.

Edwin touched many hearts and was a valued community member giving back as often as he could, especially in his church community - St. Theresa Catholic Church. He became Catholic at the age of 42. He headed up the annual St. Theresa Classy Crab Dinner since 1995 making it a very popular and time-honored event attended by many, that never had an empty seat or stomach. At the Church and St. Theresa School, he was always willing to lend a helping hand whether it be setting up cones in the parking lot, doing yard work, shoveling snow, cooking for various Church events and the priests and bishops, and doing whatever needed to be done for the parish.

He will be sorely missed. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE AN “ED” STORY OR QUOTE ON HIS FACEBOOK PAGE.
