Man dies after hitting multiple vehicles in South Lake Tahoe

5/22 update 11:00 a.m. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has released a few more details about Thursday's death of a local man.

On May 21st at 3:30 pm, the South Lake Tahoe Joint Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a reckless driver in the 1900 block of D St. The dispatch center started receiving multiple calls regarding this vehicle which had reportedly struck a fence and a parked car. Within a few minutes, the Dispatch Center received information that the driver of the reckless vehicle struck two more cars at the intersection of D St and Emerald Bay Rd and was combative and being detained by citizens in the area.

SLTPD officers responded to the scene. When the first officer arrived, he found that the driver, identified as 47-year-old Lawrence Lee of South Lake Tahoe, was on the ground being detained by two citizens. The officer took control and placed Lee into handcuffs. As soon as the officer touched Lee, he felt that he was limp.

The officer handcuffed Lee and started checking on his medical needs. The officer checked Lee’s pulse and found none and immediately started life-saving measures and summoned for fire and ambulance to respond to the scene. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Cal Tahoe Emergency Medical Services responded and attempted to revive Lee, however, they were unsuccessful. Lee was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

The El Dorado County Critical Incident Protocol was initiated. This is a procedure that brings in investigators from the El Dorado County District Attorneys office, The El Dorado County Sheriff’s office, California Highway Patrol, Placerville PD, and SLTPD. This is a long-standing county-wide agreement any time there is a death or serious injury during an arrest or in custody and provides transparency and additional resources during the investigation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is investigating the death of a 47-year-old local man who was involved in collisions in the area of D Street and Emerald Bay Road Thursday afternoon.

Law enforcement is still at the scene tonight but they are able to release some details.

At 3:30 p.m., SLTPD dispatch received a call of a reckless driver in the area of D Street. The driver had reportedly hit a fence and a parked car then kept driving toward Emerald Bay Road, turned the vehicle around, striking another parked car.

The driver got out of the car and was detained by witnesses until police officers arrived. They told SLTPD the driver was combative.

Upon arrival, the officer took control of the scene and handcuffed the driver. He then checked for a pulse, found none, and immediately began life-saving measures and called the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department for medical aid.

Despite the effort to save the man's life he was pronounced deceased at the scene according to SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney.

The coroner will be taking the body for a forensic autopsy in Sacramento.

The next of kin has not been notified by the coroner and the name of the deceased is not being released at this time.

D Street has been closed and is expected to be reopened by 8:30 p.m.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol assisted with the scene and investigation.

This is still under investigation and a full report will be released Friday. This story will be updated when more details are released.
