Angora Fire anniversary event in Meyers includes family activities and workshops

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFDO) is hosting community gathering on Sunday, June 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m to mark the 10th anniversary of the devastating Angora Fire. This event will focus on the community’s healing and resiliency.

As part of the day’s activities, the Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities has organized a workshop including an Angora fire time series photo display and formal presentation by UNR professor Peter Goin. There will also be a series of 15-minute talks about a variety of relevant topics such as fire adapted communities, defensible space landscaping, and evacuation planning.

LVPFD will have food, beverages, entertainment from the Cash Only Band, fire-related activities like a bucket brigade and informational booths.

The Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities workshops will be held in the park's clubhouse:

11:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - Predictions for the 2017 wildfire season by Bruce Bennett of Calfire.

11:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - Preparing for evacuation by Deputy Greg Almos, El Dorado County Search & Rescue

12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Time based visual study of Angora post-fire by Peter Goin, UNR

1:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Choosing the right plants for defensible space by Diane Verwoest, Master Gardner

1:45 p.m to 2:15 p.m. - Embers, junipers, dead & dense shrubs and trees by Ed Smith, UNCE Living With Fire

2:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. - Living in a Fire Adapted Community by Marybeth Donahoe, Tahoe Resource Conservation District
