South Lake Tahoe man dies in two-vehicle collision on Pioneer Trail

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man involved in a collision on Pioneer Trail Wednesday has died as a result of his injuries. On July 5, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., two cars traveling on Pioneer Trail in front of Sierra House Elementary were involved in what appears to be a head-on collision.

A blue 2013 Subaru Impreza, traveling at approximately 55 mph, was heading northbound at the same time as a white Tesla was traveling southbound at an estimated 45 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) South Lake Tahoe office. At this time the cause of the crash has not been determined.

The driver of the Subaru died as a result of his injuries at Barton Hospital. There were no other occupants in the car. His hometown is listed as South Lake Tahoe but no age has been released at this time.

The 2018 Tesla Model 3 had five occupants from Modesto, California, ranging in age from three months to 75 years old.

All involved in the collision were transported to the hospital by ground transportation or CalStar.

The Tesla driver, a 38-year-old male, is hospitalized with major injuries at Barton Hospital. His passengers are all currently hospitalized at UC Davis with moderate to major injuries (a male, age 75, female age 24, a six-year-old male and a three-month-old male).

According to the CHP report, each person was wearing a seatbelt and car seats were used.

The crash closed a section of Pioneer Trail for a few hours as the scene was processed and cleared.

CHP-South Lake Tahoe is continuing the investigation and no other information is available at this time.
