Local man facing several charges after hit and run in South Lake Tahoe

A South Lake Tahoe man is in the El Dorado County Jail, facing several charges after an alleged hit and run accident at the corner of Sierra Blvd. and Lake Tahoe Blvd. on Saturday.

An unidentified man was crossing the street in the crosswalk at the intersection of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Sierra Blvd. when he was struck by 66-year-old Gary J. Stanton.

SLT Fire Rescue responded and began treatment of the injured pedestrian. Fire department personnel tried to keep Stanton at the scene, but he fled with a passenger. Bystanders were able to give SLT Police officers a description and the direction the driver was headed.

According to SLTPD Sgt. Travis Cabral, officers found the car's passenger, Stanton's elderly father, at the corner of Ruth and Dunlap Streets as they were searching for his son. Cabral said Stanton left his dad, who is in his 90s, at the corner while he attempted to hide his car.

Gary J. Stanton, 66, was arrested and is being held on $225,000 bail. He faces charges of Hit and Run Causing Bodily Injury, DUI Alcohol Causing Injury, and Harm of an Elder/Dependent Adult.

The injured pedestrian was transported to Barton Health with moderate injuries, and the elder Stanton is being cared for.
