SR89 to close overnight in Meeks Bay

Caltrans is alerting motorists to a full overnight closure of a section of State Highway 89 in the Meeks Bay area on Thursday.

The highway is scheduled to be closed from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. Thursday between Meeks Bay Resort & Marina and Sugar Pine Point State Park to allow for a bridge to be installed at Northridge Drive as part of the ongoing bike path extension from the state park to the resort.

In addition to the full closure, motorists can expect one-way traffic control on the highway from 4:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday for continued shoulder work and to continue installation of the new bridge.

The Federal Highway Administration's Central Federal Lands Highway Division is the lead agency for construction of the Meeks Bay Trail project and completion is expected by the end of October. The construction contract was awarded to Herback General Engineering for $3.6 million.

The project includes construction of a 0.7-mile long Class 1 bike path on a new alignment. Project improvements include a bike/pedestrian Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil-Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS) over a drainage channel, bicycle railings, rockeries and water-quality features to treat runoff from the highway. The project includes four crossings of private driveways and one crossing of a culvert.
