Help plan safer and more walkable, bikeable areas around South Tahoe Middle School

Event Date:
October 16, 2014 - 7:00am

Back in April, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was awarded over $150,000 to look into providing safer, off highway opportunities around South Tahoe Middle School (STMS). The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) awarded the grant as part of their $500,000 "On Our Way" program grants.

A series of public outreach meetings will be held to share and gather comments on the plan for making the area around STMS and the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center more walkable and bikeable and a safer area for students to get to and from school.

The first two meetings will be held on Thursday, October 16. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., the public is invited to meet in front of South Tahoe Middle School for a "Walkabout and coffee talk." Attendees will walk the project area and identify safety concerns during the morning drop-off at STMS. Parents are encouraged to attend. The second meeting will be held that evening, again at STMS, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m in the school's multi-purpose room. This public workshop will introduce the project, identify opportunities and discuss challenges for walking and biking in the area. All interested community members, parents and students are encourage to attend.

The purpose of the On Our Way program is to help Lake Tahoe communities identify neighborhood-level transportation and community improvements to meet Region-wide sustainability goals of:

- creating walkable, mixed use centers
- encouraging biking, walking, and transit use
= supporting economic vitality
- reducing impacts to the environment.
