U.S. Marines training in South Lake Tahoe with MV-22 Ospreys

Have you heard, or seen, military helicopters around South Lake Tahoe the last few days? The U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is conducting training using the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft at the Lake Tahoe Airport from October 11 until at least October 18.

At first, their plans were to station 12 aircraft at the airport until October 30, so final training plans may have changed. They will also be using a meeting room and hangar at the airport for training purposes.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council recently waived the meeting room fee of $4,921. Fuel flowage fees will result in revenues for the City.

The airport receives an average of over a $1 million in grant aid a year from the Federal Government. The City of South Lake Tahoe, as a condition for accepting Federal grant funding for the Lake Tahoe Airport has agreed in writing to certain conditions. One of those conditions is making the ·airport available for use by government aircraft. The airport Fixed Based Operator, Mountain West Aviation has also waived fees for use of one of their hangars during training as a gesture of support for the U.S. Marines.
