Southwest Gas reminds customers to build snow shelters over meters

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With an early snow storm dropping almost a foot of snow around Lake Tahoe last week, and another few days of possible snow on the way, Southwest Gas is reminding its customers to start preparing for the winter months now. Customers living in areas that receive heavy snowfall need to take extra precautions to keep their natural gas meters and piping safe.

The best way to protect a meter is to install a structurally engineered shelter above your natural gas meter to prevent snow and ice accumulation. Customers can find more information on how to build a snow shelter or for a contractor referral at www.swgas.com/en/safety#snow-precautions or call 1-877-860-6020.

A snow shelter is the preferred method to keep meter safe, but there are other easy ways to keep an unsheltered meter safe:

· Never bury your meter or vents and always maintain a clear path.
· When clearing your meter use a broom, not a shovel.
· Allow vents to exhaust properly.
· Be aware of overhead snow and ice.

Delivering safe, reliable natural gas is always Southwest Gas’ top priority. While the company doesn’t perform inspections on natural gas appliances, such as a gas fireplace, it encourages customers to visit www.swgas.com to find a comprehensive listing of approved contractors to call.

As always, Southwest Gas encourages anyone who suspects a gas leak to leave the area immediately and call 911 and Southwest Gas at 1-877-860-6020 from a safe location.

Southwest Gas Corporation provides safe, affordable and clean natural gas service to two million customers in Arizona, California, and Nevada.
