The Third Annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off will be held Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex on Rufus Allen Blvd. Admission is free to the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be vendors, music, a cake walk, and fun for the kids.

Three Seats Open for STPUD Board of Directors; Filing Period Starts July 14

The terms of three board members of the South Tahoe Public Utility District are up this fall and STPUD is holding an election in consolidation with El Dorado County Elections on November 4 to fill them.

Chris Cefalu, James Jones and Eric Schafer all have their terms ending on December 1.

The filing period opens on Monday, July 14 at 9 a.m. and will close on August 8 at 5 p.m. . If an incumbent fails to file for their term by the last day of the filing period, the time will be extended for 5 days, ending Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at 5:00 p.m

Douglas County Looking for Residents to Help Decide Next County Manager

The selection process for a Douglas County Manager is moving forward after Douglas County received over 71 applications. The best qualified candidates are currently being reviewed and are slated to be presented to the Board of County Commissioners on July 17, 2014. Following the selection of top candidates, and interview panel including advisory members from the public will be part of the extensive interview process.

Lake Tahoe Community College One Step Closer to Offering 4 Year Degrees

The likelihood of four-year degrees coming to Lake Tahoe Community College just got a major boost. A bill authorizing California’s Community College System to launch a limited baccalaureate degree pilot program was just approved by the State Assembly Committee on Higher Education. Senate Bill 850 (SB 850) allows 15 California community colleges to offer one 4-year degree as early as January 1, 2015, and starting no later than the 2017-18 academic year. The bill already passed through the state Senate back in May by a 34-0 vote.

Green Gardening Workshops Continue in Lake Tahoe

It will be held at the U.C. Davis Tahoe City Field Station which is located at 2400 Lake Forest Rd in Tahoe City.

South Lake Tahoe's 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade Ready to Entertain

"I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival," the 2nd President of the United States John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail. "It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other..."

Adams wrote of the country's celebration of America's independence on July 4.

South Lake Tahoe will have many of those activities for everyone to enjoy, including a parade!

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Offers Summer Fun for Kids

Over 120 kids have taken advantage of the summer programs at the Boys and Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe. They started the summer off with a bang with a plethora of activities in the first week. They went swimming at the recreation center, enjoyed ice hockey, spent time building paddleboards, went ice skating, had drama club, golf club and bmx club, Jr Staff program, beach trips, trout creek, water day, soccer, sewing, and many more fun activities.

There are still opening available but they are going quickly.

Race the Lake of the Sky Stand Up Paddle Event in South Lake Tahoe For All Ages

The 3rd Annual Race the Lake of the Sky hits the waters of South Lake Tahoe this weekend.

Started in 2012 by South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle, Race the Lake of the Sky is a premiere flat-water SUP race and was dubbed the top pick for the best stand up paddle event of the year in 2013 by pro SUP athlete Anthony Vela. The event offers a stunning location as the backdrop in drawing hundreds of participants, novice and elite alike. Various races include short course. They wrap it all up with a 14 mile race to Emerald Bay and Back on Sunday.

DMV Offers Opportunities for Public Comment on AB60

Californians are invited to attend public hearings being held by the Department of Motor Vehicles on AB60, the state law that directs DMV to issue driver licenses to undocumented California residents.

While no hearings are held in South Lake Tahoe, there will be one in each Southern California and Northern California as well as an on-line telecast.

County Asks for Community Input on Mental Health Services Act Plan for 2014/15

Studies show that an average of 4.6% of a population are in need of services to treat a serious mental illness at any given time. That number doubles in a population where people live below 200% of the poverty level (an annual income of $23,340 for 1 person, $47,700 for a family of 4 for example).

With the current population of El Dorado County at approximately 181,000, that means anywhere between 8,329 and 16,114 people are in need of Mental Health Services.

Heavenly's Sho Kashima Named to 2015 Freestyle Skiing Team

2nd Phase of South Lake Tahoe Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance to be Delayed

After lengthy debate during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, a 3-2 vote changed the direction of the second phase of the plastic bag ban.

In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.

South Lake Tahoe Bag Ban Ordinance in Front of City Council Again

Food vendors/grocery stores in South Lake Tahoe have complied with a single use bag ban ordinance since January 15, 2014.

Many panicked business owners and residents expressed their reluctance at the time, afraid of unknown costs that might be involved as well as not having the convenience of plastic bags at check out.

If one looks at the attendance at the City's workshops for both residents and business owners on the subject, they'd assume everything is working out due to lack of participation.

Leadership Lake Tahoe Class of 2014 Graduates

The Leadership Lake Tahoe class of 2014 graduated from the ten-month program produced by TahoeChamber this week. On June 12, 2014, twenty-two participants, as well as family and friends, celebrated at Aston Lakeland Village with a commencement ceremony and reception to honor the hard work and dedication these individuals displayed throughout the year. Members of the Leadership Lake Tahoe Task Force, Leadership Alumni and TahoeChamber board members congratulated the class on its diligent efforts, as well as its success at the Leadership Lake Tahoe Summit “Elevate Your View” this past March.

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride 2014

Every year since I've had a channel I have been covering Bike The West's signature bicycling event America's Most Beautiful Bike ride; though, over the years I've varied dramatically on how I have chosen to cover it. By tradition, I always cover the bicycle race on foot to give me a different perspective to the people who cover it on bicycle helmet cams or in a car.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Senior's Farmers Market Check Booklets Available in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging has a limited supply of Senior Farmers' Market check booklets available for qualified El Dorado County Seniors. Farmers' Market check booklets will be distributed on first come, first served basis to seniors who are at least 60 years of age and meet income guidelines (one person household with annual income less than $21,590 or two person household with income less than $29,101).

Heavenly Unveils Summer Activities: Ropes Courses, Zip Line, Day Camp

Heavenly Mountain Resort has upped the ante on summer fun, introducing new adventures at the top of the Heavenly Gondola for Summer 2014. Summertime guests will have the opportunity to swing through the trees and fly through the air on new experiences including the Boulder Cove and Black Bear Challenge Courses, the Discovery Forest Canopy Course and the 3,300 foot-long Blue Streak zip line. On Friday, June 13, Heavenly Mountain Resort will open these expanded offerings to the public seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through September 1.

Nevada Highway Patrol to Take Part in "Tip a Cop" Day at Lake Tahoe's Hard Rock Cafe

Several Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol, as well as other employees for the Department of Public Safety, will be volunteering their time to raise money for Special Olympics Nevada and California on Saturday, June 14, 2014 in the Hard Rock Café in Stateline between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and between 5 p.m and 9 p.m.

The NHP and DPS will be assisting the wait staff as they serve patrons in order to earn "special tips."

Search Continues near Ice House Reservoir For Missing Man

UPDATE June 13, 2014 10:46 a.m. - The search for Vernon “Cody” Matthews over the last few days has not revealed any new information indicating his whereabouts. Sheriff D’Agostini is still dedicated to determining Cody’s location and search operations are continuing. Search and Rescue personnel from El Dorado, Solano, Placer and Contra Costa Counties are on scene along with personnel from the Bay Area Mountain Rescue team and the California Rescue Dog Association. A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol will also be assisting in todays search.

South Tahoe High School 2014 Graduation

It was a sea of blue and gold, mortarboard and tassels on Friday afternoon at South Tahoe High School as 246 seniors took the next step in their lives as they graduated in front of friends, parents and classmates.

Thunderheads and darkened skies threatened to dampen the celebrants but sunshine prevailed and ceremonies went off without a hitch tossed in by Mother Nature.

They are accepting all original artwork or photography that is 11" x 17" and fits the theme "Tahoe and Wine Tasting." The winning artist will win $500 as well as the recognition that comes with it.

Tahoe Bike Challenge Starts on Saturday

Join hundreds of your friends, neighbors, co-workers during the 2014 Tahoe Bike Challenge, an annual event that encourages Lake Tahoe residents to get out of their cars and onto bikes.

Draft Tahoe Valley Area Plan Ready for Public Review

BMP Retrofit Project Approved for Tallac Historic Site

The U.S. Forest Service has released details of the final BMP project for the Tallac Historic Site. The project will reconfigure the three entrances to the site in order to reduce confusion of travelers and create a more efficient use of paved surfaces. There will also be an internal road created to serve as a connector between Tallac, Kiva and the Visitor Center so vehicles will not have to exit to Hwy 89 to move about.
