2018 was an extraordinary year for Lake Tahoe, and one of the region’s most successful years in decades. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) assisted by dozens of partners approved landmark programs and projects, including a new Shoreline Plan, a comprehensive update of TRPA’s development rights system, and the U.S. 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project.

Washoe County Sheriff releases names of Reno homicide victims

RENO, Nev. - A Reno couple in their 80s have been identified as the victims in Wednesday's double homicide.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office today said 81-year-old Gerald David and his wife, Sharon David, age 80 were killed in their home. Next of kin have been notified.

Both victims died as a result of gunshot wounds, similar to the method used in the two recent Douglas County murders.

Schools open around Lake Tahoe on Friday

Friday, January 18, 2019 - Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Truckee Tahoe Unified School District and Washoe County schools at Incline Village are open today.

Douglas County Schools are open with the following instructions for busses at the lake:

School busses will stop at main bus stops only for Lake school Zephyr Cove Elementary (ZCES). These stops are designated as:

The corner of Tina Court and Ski Court for students living in the Tramway and Kingsbury Village area:

ZCES - Bus will arrive at 7:57 a.m. and depart at 8:20 a.m.

Merger of El Dorado Savings with PacWest Bancorp terminated

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In September, PacWest Bancorp announced the signing of a definitive agreement and plan of merger with El Dorado Savings, a transaction that was valued at approximately $466.7 million at the time.

Now the deal is off.

At a meeting of El Dorado shareholders on January 9, 2019, the transaction did not receive the two-thirds affirmative vote of outstanding shares as required under applicable federal law.

Letters: January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month

As January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, one might ask, “exactly what is human trafficking?”

Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons by means of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, for the purpose of exploitation. Sex trafficking is defined as a commercial sex act that is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age. Of particular note is the automatic classification of trafficking in children under 18 years of age.

Living the New Reality: What You Should Know About Climate Change & Wildland Fires

Office and business closures in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All El Dorado County facilities in South Lake Tahoe are closed for Thursday, January 17 due to inclement weather. This includes the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Due to a blizzard warning and high winds, both Snowmobile Tours and MS Dixie II Sightseeing Cruise has been cancelled for today.

Tahoe Toys & Treasures is closed.

El Dorado County office of Education is closed, which is a county office, but most know it as Head Start and Early Head Start.

Volunteers for Bread & Broth 4 Kids: Food bags will be packed on Friday morning at 8:45 instead of Thursday.

Snow day: LTUSD, LTCC, Douglas County at the lake, TTUSD, Incline VIllage on digital day

Thursday, January 17, 2019 - Due to current unsafe road conditions and weather forecast, school officials have called for a snow day in the following districts:

Douglas County community resources to deal with grief, anxiety and feelings of being unsafe

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - After the recent tragic accidents and murders in Douglas County, many people may be feeling grief and anxiety as well as feelings of being unsafe. County officials want residents to know they aren't alone and there are several support groups in the community that offer help, reassurance and comfort during this difficult time.

Douglas county manager resigns just days after accepting position

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Just one week ago the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners made the announcement that Tom Stone accepted their offer of employment, making him the new county manager.

On January 16, 2019, Stone submitted his resignation.

“Effective immediately I am resigning from my position as Douglas County Manager. I want to thank the Board for giving me this opportunity to serve,” stated Stone.

Having to search for a new county manager isn't something new for Douglas County.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Due to a forecast storm and concerns for driving and safety, the Douglas County commissioners have postponed their January 17 meeting.

A special meeting has been scheduled for January 24, 2019, at 1:30 p.m. at Lake Tahoe to hear the items from the January 17, 2019 agenda. The agenda has been removed from the County's website so it is unknown at this time what those items might be.

Baby and two adults die in collision on Highway 50 east of Placerville

One baby and two adults died in a two-car collision on Highway 50 Tuesday evening east of Placerville.

On January 15, 2019 at approximately 6:27 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the crash near the Camino Heights Drive intersection. They say a 51-year-old man from Fremont, Calif. was driving a 2005 Volvo 560 westbound at a speed around 60 mph. At the same time, a 39-year-old Pollock Pines, Calif. man was heading eastbound in a 2017 Subaru Impreza at approximately 65 mph.

Tahoe Warm Room open house for the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is hosting an open house at the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room on February 7, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event will begin with tours of the Warm Room from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Warm Room is the overnight emergency shelter we operate each winter to give our homeless neighbors respite from the worst of the winter weather. This year the Warm Room is located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe, next door to Ernie’s Coffee Shop.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society disbands, turns operations over to Truckee Tahoe group

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost two years after their executive director embezzled almost $60,000 from the Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS), the nonprofit tasked with helping local pets, is folding after 51 years of serving the South Lake Tahoe community.

A new board of directors had taken several steps, including the sale of their Emerald Bay Road building and laying off of employees, to get LTHS back on their feet but could never get the nonprofit's community standing back.

Suspect identified in South Lake Tahoe murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 71-year-old local man has been arrested for the murder of his 65-year-old female roommate.

James Byron Cleveland was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) after they responded to a Carson Avenue residence on a call of an injured woman on Sunday, January 13, 2019.

Woman dies after South Lake Tahoe assault; Suspect arrested.

SnowGlobe on the South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chad Donnelly, CEO of SnowGlobe Music Festival, and Lauren Thomaselli, SLT Recreation Superintendent, will brief the Council about the recent 2018 SnowGlobe Music Festival held from December 29 – 31 at the Community Playfields and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) during the January 15 Council meeting. One arrested in South Lake Tahoe honey oil explosion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One man has been arrested in connection with Friday's house fire on Kyburz Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Joe Johnson, 37, was arrested on a felony charge of manufacturing a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of a police officer.

New mobile vending ordinance for South Lake Tahoe before City Council Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Food trucks will soon be a part of the South Lake Tahoe culture if a new ordinance is approved during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.

After many public meetings and the recent approval by the Planning Commission, the new ordinance would streamline the existing mobile vendor permitting procedures and
allow limited mobile vending at up to six private commercial locations in the city.

After 28 years, Richard Solbrig retires as head of South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For many, Richard Solbrig has been the only person they knew as the general manager of South Lake Public Utility District.

On Wednesday, Janury 9, 2019, Sobrig retired.

The district's board of directors unanimously approved a resolution during their January 3 meeting, honoring Solbrig for he service that began in 1990. He has been their general manager since 2003.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after allegedly attempting to carjack firefighter's vehicle

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 27-year-old South Lake Tahoe man picked the wrong vehicle to try and carjack and is now behind bars for his actions, facing several charges including attempted kidnapping.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) today released a series of updated permit applications for shorezone projects and activities under the recently-adopted Shoreline Plan that is taking effect this year.

Bread & Broth to benefit from Tahoe Chamber's annual Connect for a Cause

Hosted by the Tahoe Chamber, the mixer will raise funds and gather food donations for the group's Bread & Broth 4 Kids program which gives away up to 170 bags of food each weekend to local school children in grades K-8.

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors today approved the appointment of Bill
O’Neill as Registrar of Voters, effective January 9, 2019.

O’Neill was most recently vice president of election cybersecurity and consulting for Runbeck Elections Services, Inc., a private sector elections technology, products and services company. While there, he built a collection of new election-focused software products which improved, among other things, the duplicate ballot

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quiet weather will prevail most of today before the next storm impacts the Sierra tonight into Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe from 1:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.

There will be mountain snow and very light rain for far western Nevada valleys.

57th annual Lake Valley Firefighter's Ball

The 57th annual Firefighters Ball fundraiser hosted by the Lake Valley Firefighter Foundation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe.

As the beginning of fairly strong weather system has just hit the Sierra, there are not only chain controls but also a series of collisions and spinouts. The storm shouldn't have surprised anyone as warnings have been in place all week.

As of 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019, chain controls are up on all mountain roads around Lake Tahoe on the California side, expected to be going up soon on the Nevada side.
