Lane closure Sunday night near Fanny Bridge
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/21/2018 - 11:49pmNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a lane closure near the Caltrans Maintenance Yard on SR 89 heading into Tahoe City from Truckee from 10 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 23 to noon on Monday, Sept. 24. The construction contractor will be handling drainage work and underground utility work.
Traffic may back up along SR 28 into downtown Tahoe City.
Flaggers in the area have been advised to let school buses and public transportation (TART buses) to go through without having to wait upwards of 20 minutes as the rest of the vehicles can expect to be delayed.
Quick response keeps Echo Summit fire contained to small area
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/20/2018 - 9:41amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An illegal and abandoned campfire near the Pacific Crest Trail ignited a fire on Wednesday evening.
Crews from USFS, Lake Valley Fire and Calfire were called to the 5:20 p.m. fire on September 19. They staged at the Echo Summit Caltrans maintenance yard on Highway 50, and when determined to be on Forest Service land, the Engine 42 crew from USFS hiked into the fire location and the others were on call in case needed.
SR89 to close overnight in Meeks Bay
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/19/2018 - 5:38pmCaltrans is alerting motorists to a full overnight closure of a section of State Highway 89 in the Meeks Bay area on Thursday.
The highway is scheduled to be closed from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. Thursday between Meeks Bay Resort & Marina and Sugar Pine Point State Park to allow for a bridge to be installed at Northridge Drive as part of the ongoing bike path extension from the state park to the resort.
South Lake Tahoe's $5.5M Sierra Boulevard project to start in 2019

US 395 and SR 108 open near Boot Fire; Forest closed to public
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/08/2018 - 12:54pmFirefighers now have a containment line around three percent of the Boot Fire as 6,873 acres have burned. Fire activity moderated yesterday with little fire growth occurring. More than 570 firefighters and numerous helicopters are making headway.
Boot Fire now at 4,620 acres with evacuations and road closures, including US 395

South Lake Tahoe roadwork schedule to change after Labor Day weekend
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/29/2018 - 2:33pmDue to heavy traffic expected in Lake Tahoe for the Labor Day weekend, Caltrans will suspend roadwork for the holiday, but there will be big changes in their work schedule starting Tuesday, September 4.
In South Lake Tahoe, roadwork on U.S. Highway 50 from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue will be suspended starting Friday, August 31 at 8:00 a.m. and will resume on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Although Caltrans construction is not happening during Labor Day weekend, there will be heavy traffic and work zones will still be set up. Please "Be Work Zone Alert."

Trees growing into navigable airspace at airport, bid accepted for removal
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/09/2018 - 11:19pmTrees on the 46.52 acre Lake Tahoe Airport property will soon be removed as required (and overdue) by the California Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics. It has been 11 years since trees have been removed on the property and there is increasing threat into the navigable airspace at north end of runway from trees. The aircraft that frequent the airport would be unable to takeoff with the increased growth.
For the past five years, the department has issued letters of correction to remove multiple tree obstructions on the runway.

Delaware Sand Filter being installed on US50 in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/16/2018 - 11:52pmMany have wondered about the structure being built near the Upper Truckee Bridge at US50 and River Drive in South Lake Tahoe. It's tall framing from two weeks ago has become a system of steel, cement, sand and is an in-line facility for stormwater collection and treatment.
This system, called a Delaware sand filter, stands alone and requires no pond or pretreatment. There was a like filter system installed at US50 and Rufus Allen Boulevard a couple of years ago. It has been found to be effective in removing common pollutants from stormwater drain off.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/02/2018 - 4:13pmThe 4th of July is not only a fun holiday, but it is a very busy one in Lake Tahoe. Due to heavy holiday traffic, Caltrans will suspend their roadwork projects at the lake.
Roadwork on U.S. Highway 50 from the "Y" intersection to the Trout Creek Bridge will be suspended starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 3. The regular weekly construction schedule will resume at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 5.
Although construction will be suspended for the holiday, there will be heavy traffic and work zones will still be set up. Please "Be Work Zone Alert."

His bail has been set at $125,000, $75,000 for Hit and Run Causing Injury/Death and $50,000 for Involuntary Manslaughter.

Cyclist killed by hit-and-run driver along US50 in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/27/2018 - 1:51pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 33-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died after being struck by a vehicle on US 50 between Grocery Outlet and the Upper Truckee Bridge as he crossed the highway.
Crews from Security Paving, the Caltrans contractor working in the area, arrived at the job site at 5:38 a.m. Wednesday and found the body off the side of the road and called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).
SLTPD arrived first but turned the incident over to California Highway Patrol (CHP) as it was construction zone incident. Work had not yet begun for the day.

Big changes for Wye in North Lake Tahoe as iconic features removed
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/23/2018 - 1:44pmThere are still trout in the Lake Tahoe Basin, but soon there will no longer the large trout sculpture that for years has greeting people to the town of North Lake Tahoe.
The iconic 21-foot trout sculpture has been sitting in the island intersection between State Route 89 and State Route 28 along with the Williamson Tree and Rotary Club flagpole.
Camp Richardson light to remain "off line" indefinitely
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/17/2018 - 12:40pmCAMP RICHARDSON, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After meeting with partner agencies, Caltrans has decided to discontinue the use of the pedestrian hybrid beacon crossing device on State Route 89 in Camp Richardson indefinitely.
In an effort to make for safe pedestrian passage across the highway and to manage traffic through the State Highway 89 corridor, Caltrans installed the beacons in 2016 but they were often confusing to drivers with its yellow and red light system.
Caltrans awards $9.5M contract for Highway 50 repaving at El Dorado County line
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/14/2018 - 11:07amThe main artery between South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento/Bay area will be getting a much needed repaving job with funds from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the gas tax increase that went into effect January 1, 2018.
Caltrans will repave 200 lane miles on U.S. Highway 50 from the El Dorado/Sacramento County line to west of Sunrise Boulevard in Sacramento County from the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
Funds generated because of the bill's passing come from:
A 12-cent-a-gallon increase on gas excise tax
A 20-cent-a-gallon increase in diesel excise tax
One driver dies in truck crash in Alpine County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/09/2018 - 5:19pmUPDATE 5/10/18 10:30 a.m.: State Route 88 remains closed near Woodfords Thursday morning as crews work to remove the demolished tanker truck involved in Wednesday's fatal crash.
Gregory Brown, 46, of Oakland, California has been identified as the driver, whose body was found at the scene nine hours after the crash.
Emergency personnel responded to the 10:05 a.m. call on May 9, 2018 on State Route 88 near the Caltrans maintenance yard west of Woodfords and the SR-89 junction. Upon arrival they found an overturned tanker and detached cab off the roadway.
Fanny Bridge/SR-89 project in full swing, expect delays in Tahoe City
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/07/2018 - 3:11pmWork resumed May 1 on the SR 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project in Tahoe City, a project that will bring a new Truckee River Bridge, three roundabouts, and street improvements including lights and sidewalks.
The old Fanny Bridge will be replaced with one that has a new bridge rail that matches the original bridge rail, plus there will now be sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Wendy David has announced the focus of the next several of her monthly community chats held at the SLT Senior Center.
On May 16, the "Let's Have a Conversation" will have special guests Caltrans Distict 3 Public Information Officer Steve Nelson and Stan Hill, project manager for the Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project. They'll be talking about the roadwork projects for this season within the City of South Lake Tahoe.
Everyone is welcome to join in. The chat is from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and the Senior Center is located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Roadwork season returns in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/28/2018 - 9:20amThe three-year long, $56.9 million Caltrans project on a two-mile stretch of Highway 50 from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge is set to resume next week in South Lake Tahoe.
Scope of work in 2018 is from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue as well as repaving the “Y” intersection. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 30 at 6:00 a.m. from Winnemucca Avenue working east. The work schedule for May will be from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Caltrans signs near the Y and other Sierra locations temporarily down
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/27/2018 - 9:56pmSome of the Changable Message Signs (CMS) in California are down due to a transition to a new technology. These signs in South Lake Tahoe normally show how long it takes to get from Stateline to the Y, and then to Placerville, along with other stops.
Caltrans had to break down one system before the next could be implemented.
The South Lake Tahoe signs should be working in about two weeks according to Caltrans officials. Other signs in the county should be back up in one week.
Road to a solution for traffic jams as cars leave South Lake Tahoe

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel held another town hall meeting about traffic with almost 30 people at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School this week. She brought along El Dorado County transportation staff and was joined by the California Highway Patrol.

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel will be holding a public meeting on Wednesday, April 18 to continue the discussion on traffic issues in the Meyers area. The meeting will be held at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
This is a follow up to her February 28 meeting on the subject that plagues Meyers neighborhoods on busy Sundays and holidays as visitors leave South Lake Tahoe and head west over Echo Summit.
Deadline looming for Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project

The .6 mile stretch of road will receive Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/21/2018 - 1:48pmJust after reopening, a snowslide and incoming storm have prompted Caltrans to close State Highway 89 around Emerald Bay until the weather clears.
Today’s slide dumped snow as high as 15 feet deep and about 160 feet long. Rain in the Lake Tahoe area is expected to turn to snow on Thursday. Only light snow is expected at pass levels through Thursday morning, with heavy snow possible beginning Thursday afternoon.
State Route 89 opens up around Emerald Bay
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/20/2018 - 10:24amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) have cleared the snow from State Route 89 around Emerald Bay, opening the roads for the first time since Thursday.
Several feet of snow fell from Thursday to Saturday around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, keeping snow removal crews busy on all mountain roads.
With new storm systems headed to Lake Tahoe this week, the road could be closed again. For up to the minute road information, visit http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.
Highway 50 reopens, closing at times for avalanche control

It is a mess along Highway 50 through the Sierra today due to spinouts and downed power lines. The road has been closed in both directions near Silver Fork as crews work on getting a power line off the roadway. Caltrans estimates reopening at 3:01 p.m. at this time.
Conservancy approves funding for ED raise and several projects
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/15/2018 - 11:24pmDuring this week's California Tahoe Conservancy board meeting, funds were not only approved for the Greenway shared use trail in South Lake Tahoe, but also for grants to be used on the lake, a forest health project and a 10 percent raise for Executive Director Patrick Wright.
Final funding in place for South Lake Tahoe's Greenway Trail
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/15/2018 - 10:46pmThe next phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail will now be completed by El Dorado County, a move that is estimated to save $1,000,000.
During this week's meeting of the California Tahoe Conservancy Board, approval was given to the transfer of a $3.182 million grant to El Dorado County to build the next phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail. Conservancy staff recommended transferring the project from the State to the County who they said is in an advantageous position to deliver the project, and has indicated that it can complete the Project in a timely manner.
Collision between snow plow and vehicle in South Lake Tahoe

At approximately 8:39 p.m. on March 4, 2018, a Caltrans snow plow assisting with the middle lane berm cleanup along Highway 50 in collided with a van.
Snow plow off the road near Echo Summit; Road closed until moved
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/02/2018 - 8:26am9:15 a.m. update: Highway 50 is reopened Friday morning. The Caltrans snow plow is still down the embankment but crews were able to get it back up on its wheels. They decided to leave the truck down the embankment as traffic was backing up and they will retrieve it at a later time.
Holiday traffic and slick roads keeping tow trucks and law enforcement busy
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/19/2018 - 4:50pmNorth Upper Truckee and Sawmill Road have become parking lots Monday afternoon, reminiscent of 2017's problems of ill-equipped vehicles on snow covered back roads.
The California Highway Patrol and El Dorado County Sheriff's Office have spent Monday responding to several calls in the Meyers area of cars stuck on side roads as they attempt to circumvent the backlog of traffic on Highway 50.
Along with those issues there have been several accidents and as of 3:30 p.m, State Route 88 may have to close due to a crash
South Lake Tahoe's Sierra Boulevard study released for public review

As part of the process, an The Initial Sturdy/Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) is now up for review and public comment. Comments can be made until March 26, 2018.
