Winds and chance of rain in South Lake Tahoe in forecast

Mild weather at the lake this weekend, perfect for fall yard cleanup and a trip to Apple Hill and other fall favorites.

Southwest breezes will increase Saturday and Sunday as low pressure strengthens off the Pacific Northwest coast. Breezy and cooler weather is on tap for early next week with a chance for showers, mainly over northeast California. There is a slight chance of upper elevation snow at the end of the week.

Little Valley Fire is now 55% contained, 3,400 acres burned

10/16/16 update 7:00PM - The Little Valley Fire is holding at 3,400 acres with 55 percent containment. 667 personnel remain on the incident. More rain forecast tonight which will aid in extinguishing the fire which started on Friday.

22 residences and 17-outbuildings were destroyed with 480 homes saved in the direct vicinity of the fire. Multiple structures remain under threat until 100-percent containment has been achieved.

Three rescued by Coast Guard on south end of Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE - Three people were rescued after a distress call led the Coast Guard to the 25-foot vessel, JUST ENOUGH, as it was taking on water near the California/Nevada border of the South Shore of Lake Tahoe Tuesday afternoon.

The initial call came in at 3:00 p.m. and crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County Sheriffs Department responded to the scene.

Coast Guard continuing investigation into Tahoe Queen fire

An investigation team from the Coast Guard is continuing their investigation into Tuesday's fire on board the Tahoe Queen, which suffered severe damage while it was docked at the pier at the Zephyr Cove Marina on Lake Tahoe's South Shore.

At this point they have not completed their investigation and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Fire severely damages Tahoe Queen

ZEPHYR COVE, NV - Investigators and vessel inspectors from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco are on the scene of Tuesday's fire on board the 119-foot passenger Lake Tahoe paddle wheel boat, the Tahoe Queen.

"Most of the damage is limited to the boat's pilot house and second deck," Lt. Jake Aulner of the U.S. Coast Guard told South Tahoe Now. "This can be attributed to the great response by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department."

Aulner and the team from USCG Yerba Buena Island will be at the scene until the cause of the morning blaze is determined.

Boat sinks in Lake Tahoe with 4 men on board; All rescued after late night search

Four men from San Francisco are very lucky today after being rescued early Sunday morning after their rented boat sank three miles off shore in the cold waters of Lake Tahoe.

Shouts for help were heard from people staying both at the Zephyr Cove Presbyterian Center and in Marla Bay, and 911 calls were made into the Tahoe Douglas Fire station.

For reasons unknown at this time, the boat started taking in water at about 10:00 p.m. None of the four passengers were wearing life jackets.

Man dies in Lake Tahoe after jet skiing accident

A 22-year-old man from Oakland, Calif., drowned off the shore of South Lake Tahoe on Saturday after a jet skiing accident.

At 6:10 p.m. August 13, a person at the Timber Cover Marina reported an over due jet skier. Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to the pier where they learned two men had been thrown off a rented jet ski after hitting a wave about 100 yards off the the marina. One man was able to swim back to the jet ski, but the other man, Raeshon Williams, did not. Neither man was wearing a life jacket.

Never Forget, Never Forgotten - Kaleb James Martin Curtzwiler 1982-2010

Kaleb James Martin Curtzwiler died August 9, 2010. He was 28.

Mr. Curtzwiler was born Jan. 27, 1982, at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. The 2000 South Tahoe High School graduate was an avid soccer player.

Although he did not ski competitively, it was a sport he participated in with his family and one that he excelled at.

Woman airlifted to Reno after Lake Tahoe boating accident

Updated Story 7/25/16:

A 22-year-old woman from Oregon is in serious condition at Renown Medical Center in Reno after having her leg caught in the propeller of a boat on Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon. The boat with twin propellers had been pulling her on an innertube, but upon re-entering the boat the unidentified woman's legs were caught in the props.

South Lake Tahoe in the 80s while Reno and Sacramento hit 100 next week

A far reaching high pressure system is over the west coast, with temperatures reaching into the 100s up and down the middle of California and into Nevada.

The record temperatures for South Lake Tahoe are around 90, with the average being 80. Here is the forecast for the week from the National Weather Service.

Sunday - Sunny, with a high near 82. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.

Sunday Night - Clear, with a low around 46. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

New business on the way to town: South Lake Brewing Company

South Lake Tahoe natives Nicole Riegel Smith and Chris Smith have returned to their hometown, this time as college graduates with an expertise in brewing beer and a desire to open a new business on the South Shore.

Plans have been submitted and the work will soon begin on the Smith's venture. South Lake Brewing Company. They have signed the lease for the long vacant Ace Hardware building on the corner of Tata Lane and Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Importance of understanding dangers of cold water shock

The most common misunderstanding about swimming in Lake Tahoe is that people can suffer from hypothermia, which leads to death. The real truth is that "cold water shock" will kill much quicker than hypothermia ever will.

Jinkens was the SLT City Manager from August 2002 until August 2010 when he retired after 35 year of service as a City CEO. Now, he's headed back to where he and wife Terri lived and worked when they were first married.

Search called off for UNR football player missing in waters of Lake Tahoe

Search teams have suspended the search for a paddle boarder who went missing Friday night off of Obexer’s Marina on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office reported Saturday, June 11 that two days of searching have not recovered Marc Ma, a 20-year-old football player for the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).

National Safe Boating Week

National Safe Boating Week is May 21-27, 2016 and is the launch of the 2016 North American Safe Boating Campaign. This yearlong campaign promotes safe and responsible boating and the value of voluntary, consistent life jacket wear by recreational boaters through the national theme, Wear It!

The local US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-04 in South Lake Tahoe is promoting the Wear It! campaign and hopes it will remind boaters of the importance of boating safely, including consistent life jacket wear, boating sober, knowing navigational rules and having a proper lookout.

Anne “Annie” Elisabeth Thomas passed away peacefully on Friday, April 29 after a hard fought battle with cancer. Annie was born in Batavia, New York on December 16th, 1955, to Anne Elisabeth McGee (Zehrung) and Herman Fisher.

Lake Tahoe 'discovered' by John C. Fremont on Valentine's Day, 1844

It was 174 years ago, on Valentine's Day in 1844, when John C. Frémont and Charles Preuss “discovered” Lake Tahoe as they were making the first crossing across the Sierra Nevada in winter. The pair had been hired by Congress to explore the Colombia River region to the Pacific Ocean with famous scouts Kit Carson and Thomas Fitzpatrick.

Record temperatures forecast for South Lake Tahoe

With a snowpack 130% of average, the warm temperatures which are forecast this week in South Lake Tahoe aren't worrying those watching the drought situation, yet.

A high pressure system over the west coast will bring record, or near record, temperatures up and down the coast with Sacramento in the 70s and Los Angeles near 90. Reno will be in the 60s.

The long range forecast from accuweather.com calls for wet weather back again soon. One system next week could bring rain, but stronger chances of rain and snow over the last two weeks of the month.

Last storm helped Lake Tahoe gain 7.89 billion gallons of water; More on the way

The most recent storm to hit the Lake Tahoe basin brought with it more rain than snow, but it allowed the lake to rise .20 feet which equals 7.89 billion gallons of water.

The Truckee River in Reno rose 3.71 feet and Donner Lake added 1.72 feet, or 385 million gallons of water.

Ski areas in the basin all got a boost in snow with Mt. Rose seeing the most at 16 inches. Heavenly added 4" and both Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood saw 10" added to their base.

Two storms headed to Lake Tahoe this week

As one weather system leaves Lake Tahoe, the next one is waiting off the coast of California and heading to the Sierra overnight. The National Weather Service says upper elevations will see more snow that the past storm, with rain for the valleys. South Lake is at an elevation that rests in between rain and snow.

Most snow impacts will be confined to areas above 7,000 feet, a rain/snow mix around 6500 feet and all rain in lower valley locations will create slick road conditions. The highest elevations can see a foot of snow, with 1 to 4" above 6,500 feet, and one inch around the lake.

Weak systems aren't promising much snow to Lake Tahoe Basin

A few weak weather systems are headed to Lake Tahoe, but they don't bring with them much of a chance for precipitation.

A weak storm will pass to the north on Monday and Tuesday with 20% chance of it leaving a little snow according to the National Weather Service.

El Nino making snow now, but climate change 'loads dice' for warmer future winters

he El Niño weather pattern that's fueling a snowy start to 2016 for the Lake Tahoe region is among the strongest on record and likely to continue bringing storms to the region.

But the long-term climate prognosis for the Sierra Nevada and the planet as a whole is more troubling with rising global temperatures threatening to make cold, snowy winters less likely in the future.

That was the message two climate scientists delivered Friday to an audience of meteorologists gathered for a conference at Lake Tahoe.

Former City of South Lake Tahoe employee now Galt City Manager

Galt City Council members on Dec. 15 were expected to name an experienced administrator in smaller jurisdictions as Galt’s next city manager.

Eugene Palazzo, who started his career in 1989 as a planning technician in Nevada County, has served as Crescent City’s city manager since 2011.

The council vote was not known at press time.

Galt city staff wrote in the council report that Palazzo has more than 27 years of experience in local government.

Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley to celebrate early openings

After Monday's and Tuesday's snowstorm in Lake Tahoe, two more large ski resorts have announced their opening date, well ahead of planned.

Squaw Valley an Alpine Meadows have been making snow, and combined with what Mother Nature brought, they are able to open. Alpine Meadows is opening for the season on Thursday, November 12 at 9:00 a.m., a month ahead of the planned December 11 scheduled date. They plan on operating Kangaroo Chair as well as limited dining options.

Did you see it? Object flies across sky, observed from San Diego to Carson City

A mysterious light that streaked across the night sky Saturday, visible as far away as Nevada and Arizona, was a Trident missile test-fired by the Navy, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

KOLO reports it has spoken with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and they said the light in the sky was confirmed through the John Wayne Airport tower to be a Naval test fire off the coast. No further details.

Lake Tahoe area ski resorts holding job fairs; Teens can apply

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort will all be having job fairs at the beginning of November, and new this year, 15- and 16-year-old teens can now be employed.

They are accepting applications for the upcoming 2015-16 winter season as well as having the job fairs.

Forecast: Lake Tahoe shouldn't expect benefit of a strong El Niño

A strong El Niño is predicted to help ease drought conditions in some, but not all of California. The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) released their latest seasonal weather assessment on Thursday, and news isn't very good for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Missing Sierra Nevada College student safe and back at school

Update 7 a.m. 10/14/15:

Dianne Thacher is no longer missing and returned to her dorm room at Sierra Nevada College Tuesday afternoon. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that she is safe, not injured and that there was no foul play associated with her disappearance.

Total Lunar Eclipse of Supermoon on Sunday night

On the night of September 27–28, the full Moon will slide completely through Earth's shadow for the last time until January 2018.

The total eclipse for viewers in the West Coast starts at 7:11 p.m. By 7:47 p.m. it will be in mid-eclipse and it ends at 8:23 p.m. The penumbra is last visible at 9:55 p.m.

New local business to host Tahoe Business Expo

West Coast Expos is organizing the "Tahoe Business Expo," an event where property and business owners, managers, CEOs and entrepreneurs will find resources and solutions while networking with experts in almost every field. It will be held at Harvey's Lake Tahoe on October 30, 2015.

They are looking for business owners who'd like to participate as an exhibitor, people to participate in a whole day of business seminars as well as people looking to connect with local companies. Seminars are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., exhibits open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

1,500 hear GOP presidential hopefuls in Gardnerville

More than 1,500 people flocked to Gardnerville on Saturday for one of the biggest gatherings of 2016 presidential candidates in Nevada since campaign season started.

Attorney General Adam Laxalt’s Morning Nevada PAC hosted the first Basque Fry featuring five GOP contenders on the Corley Ranch southeast of town. Republican hopefuls including businesswoman Carly Fiorina, Dr. Ben Carson, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker each made pitches to the crowd as to why they should be the nominee. Former New York Gov. George Pataki was slated to appear, but did not.

Experts warn of a Godzilla El Niño this fall.

So, what exactly is a "Godzilla" El Niño?

Actually, it’s just a clever joke by a NASA climatologist: "This definitely has the potential of being the Godzilla El Niño," Bill Patzert of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, California, said Thursday.

What's It Look Like?

"Godzilla" El Niño is not a technical or scientific term, but it's a good way to describe the upcoming El Niño event, because it could likely be one of the strongest since record-keeping began in 1950.

Red Flag Warning for Lake Tahoe region Thursday

Expect high winds and waves up to four feet on Thursday as a low pressure weather system drops from the Pacific Coast and passes through the Lake Tahoe basin. Winds will be 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

With an increase in winds also comes an increase in fire dangers.

Dry condition paired with gusty winds can cause fires to get large before responders can get to them.

The Red Flag warning is from August 13 at 2 p.m. to August 14 at 11 a.m.
The Lake Wind Advisory lasts from August 13 at 2 p.m. to August 14 at 5 p.m.

Mother and kids rescued on Lake Tahoe

The Coast Guard and multiple agencies rescued three people Wednesday evening after they were reported missing on Lake Tahoe.

At 9:45 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Command Center watchstanders received notification from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe that a 31-year-old female and her two children were missing and were last seen drifting on a raft in Meeks Bay.

The Sector San Francisco Command Center issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched a rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe.
