Firefighters stop advance of massive Reno wildfire

Update 5 p.m.: Firefighters have stopped the advance of the fire and are now going back and putting out hot spots. Light snow and lessening winds are helping the efforts. Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said 25 homes have been impacted by the fire. The fire has burned between 1,700 and 2,000 acres. One firefighter has been injured, one person suffered a heart attack and died and more than 4,500 NV Energy customers are without power.

Occupy protest moves to South Lake Tahoe

About 20 or so have gathered today on Highway 50 near Stateline and South Lake Tahoe as part of a nationwide Occupy Wall Street protest. For information go here.
Police scanner traffic between Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe report no problems thus far associated with the protest, which began around noon.

Secret Witness program key to closing cases

More than five years after the parents of a slain South Lake Tahoe teenager asked local authorities for help in solving the 1980 murder of their son, the case remains active and some remain hopeful the case could be solved.
Information that surfaced two years ago about the murder of Richard Swanson turned the cold case into an active one, with retired FBI agent Jeff Rinek and South Lake Tahoe police investigator Chuck Owens continuing their search for the killers.

Autopsy provides no new details in local woman's death; investigation continues

Investigators have no new leads in the case of a South Lake Tahoe woman whose remains were found in southern Washington state in early October. The cause of death remains undetermined after an autopsy was performed.
In July, 54-year-old Marie Hanson traveled with a neighbor to the Rainbow Gathering, a countercultural event emphasizing peace and love. She was last seen on July 7, then disappeared, leaving all her personal effects behind.

Prescribed burns continue across Lake Tahoe

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations on Kingsbury Grade near North Benjamin today, Monday, November 14, 2011. South Lake Tahoe jail set to get more crowded

As of October 1, nine new inmates have been incarcerated in the El Dorado County jail who would have previously gone to state prison. With the state short of funds and under a court mandate to relieve overcrowding in its state prisons, those committing non-violent, non-serious and non-sex offenses will be housed in county jails rather than state prisons under a program dubbed "realignment."
