A South Lake Tahoe woman was arrested on Wednesday, April 8, on manslaughter charges stemming from a November, 2014 accident on Pioneer Trail where speed and alcohol were involved.

Man pleads guilty to videotaping Reno Teens; Previous Douglas County conviction

Reno resident Rodney Skan, age 60, plead guilty on April 8 in Washoe County to a charge of stalking after he admitted to videotaping four Reno high school girls during the fall of 2013. Police found 175 hours of footage in his motel room of the girls, ages 14, 15 and two 17-year-olds taken at local high school girls sporting events. Skan fixated on particular girls, following them to multiple games throughout the season.

Remains of man missing since 2006 found in rural area of county

The remains of a homicide victim, killed more than nine years ago and unearthed last week in rural El Dorado County, have been identified.

The El Dorado County Cold Case Homicide Task Force announced Thursday that it located and identified the human remains of Tobias Kaiser who was last seen at his home in Somerset, CA on November 30, 2006.

Pot dispensary sues El Dorado County over raid

The former operator and members of a Diamond Springs marijuana dispensary are suing El Dorado County to recover seized marijuana, medical records and financial documents taken in a Sheriff’s Department raid last year.

The Pure Life Collective has been shuttered since the Nov. 17, 2014, raid, which resulted in the arrest of dispensary operator Kelly Chiusano. No charges have been filed.

New Court Commissioner appointed for South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Superior Court has announced the appointment of Douglas R. Hoffman as Court Commissioner. Hoffman will be based in South Lake Tahoe but will serve in all of the branches in El Dorado County. He will hear all case types, but will specialize in cases involving family law, child support, domestic violence and civil harassment, juvenile dependency and delinquency, traffic, limited civil cases, as well as overflow matters as assigned by the Presiding Judge.

Habitual DUI offender convicted in El Dorado County Court

The El Dorado County District Attorney's office announced the felony DUI conviction of six time offender Michael Ramirez. The 44-year old was convicted of two counts of felony driving under the influence and three counts of driving on a suspended license on February 26 in Placerville.

Ramirez had four prior DUI convictions, one of which was a felony, as well as two prior prison terms within the past 10 years.

He is currently in the EL Dorado County Jail in Placerville awaiting his April 6 sentencing.

Caesars denies another request from second-level bond holder

Caesars Entertainment Corp. is getting used to saying no.

For the second time in two weeks, the casino operator rejected a demand from an unsecured second level bondholder for payment of the obligations.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Monday, Caesars said BOKF N.A. asked for payment on $750 million in debt plus interest. Caesars said it turned down the payment demand.

Battle Over Tahoe Bears Gets Ugly

A Lake Tahoe woman is suing a longtime bear protection group after she says she got death threats for reporting an aggressive black bear to Nevada authorities, who then killed the animal.

Adrienne Evans, a professional mountain bike racer and high school science teacher, accuses the BEAR League of igniting an ugly social media campaign that turned into a vengeful attempt to run her and her husband out of town. She said she loves bears and wasn't trying to get the animal killed.

El Dorado County Court News: Huntsman awaits trial in SLT; Conviction in Crime Ring

Suspected arsonist Wayne Huntsman remains in the county jail in South Lake Tahoe, awaiting his court trial. Huntsman is accused of setting the September, 2014 King Fire which burned almost 100,000 acres near Pollock Pines.

A trial setting conference has been set for March 13 in Department 2 of Superior Court of El Dorado County.

Three arrested in stabbing death of El Dorado County man

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office arrested three suspects for the murder of 55-year-old Pete Thomas.

On the evening of February 3, police found Thomas's body inside of a home in the 3200 block of Sand Ridge Road in unincorporated Placerville. Detectives and crime scene investigators examined the scene and circumstances of Thomas’ death and determined it was a homicide, said El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Lt. Tom Murdoch.

Leaking acid in Minden brings out Hazmat teams

When personnel from Douglas County East Fork Fire District responded to a call of a hazardous material spill in Minden on Wednesday, they didn't know what they would find.

The call took them to an abandoned warehouse located at 1180 Angela Court where they found the hazardous materials. They requested assistance from the Quad County Hazmat Team as they didn't know what was spilled inside.

During the initial assessment, fire crews located two different types of acid so they took precautionary measures to insure that leaks has stopped from the containers inside the building.

Lance Armstrong must pay $10 million in perjury battle

To protect his mythic status as an American sports hero, Lance Armstrong lied under oath in 2005, saying he never used performance-enhancing drugs. An arbitration panel in Texas ruled it's time for him to pay for it, handing down a $10 million penalty believed to be the largest such sanction against an individual in American judicial history.

In a 2-1 decision, the panel ordered the disgraced cyclist to pay the money to SCA Promotions, a Dallas sports insurance company that paid Armstrong's bonuses for winning the Tour de France and then helped cause his epic fall from grace in 2012.

A federal grand jury returned a six-count indictment today against Mark McLeod Wygant, 44, resident of Chico and former South Lake Tahoe Fire Captain, charging him with Sexual Exploitation and Attempted Sexual Exploitation of Minors, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

South Tahoe Vikings beat Sparks Railroaders on Senior Night

It was Senior Night in the Blue Gym at South Tahoe High School on Tuesday Night, and the seniors made it count.

Seven members of the Vikings varsity basketball team will be graduating in June, and as is tradition, parents and family members join their students on the court for a celebration. Seniors on the girl's basketball team, cheer team and dance team also took part in the festivities.

All too often, we hear from people who have been victimized by some sort of scam. Before the internet existed these “confidence scams” were frequently perpetuated through direct contact and bolstered by a victim who is too trusting. With the internet and other technology, criminals have shifted their efforts so as to accomplish their rip-off over long distances and without direct contact. Unfortunately, local law enforcement has limited capacity to track and ultimately prosecute such crimes.

South Lake Tahoe fire captain arrested on porn charges is resident of Chico

A Chico man who works as a captain for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has been arrested on suspicion of child pornography.

Mark McLeod Wygant, 44, appeared in federal court Friday and is scheduled for preliminary examination Feb. 13, unless he is indicted earlier, which would change the appearance to arraignment, said Lauren Horwood, spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Bond was not offered and he remains in custody at Sacramento County Jail.

City of South Lake Tahoe wins case in Federal Court

A 2011 false arrest complaint against the City of South Lake Tahoe by Patrick Solomon ended up in a jury trial in Federal Court's Eastern Division in Sacramento. On Thursday the jury came back with a decision siding with the defense, stating that there was no wrong doing on behalf of the City or the police department.

The case started when Solomon was arrested on January 21, 2011 for assaulting an El Dorado County Sheriff's Officer Deputy Brandon Pena.

Officer Pena was a County correctional officer and knew the plaintiff during his time as an inmate at the El Dorado County jail.

First degree murder charges filed in death of Douglas County infant

A 23-year old Carson Valley man is now facing first degree murder charges in the death of this two month old daughter Ava Getty.

The infant was brought into the Carson Valley Medical Center by her father, Trent Getty, on January 7 with serious injuries. According to Douglas County Sheriff's investigators, the infant died after suffering substantial injuries that were the result of traumatic abuse and inconsistent with the statement given by Getty regarding how the injury occurred.

Sacramento drug dealer sentenced to over 21 years in prison

John Winton Harris, 31, of Sacramento, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Morrison C. England Jr. to 21 years and 10 months in prison for possessing more than 163 grams of crack cocaine, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

Caesars rolls the dice in bankruptcy court

Casino company Caesars Entertainment (CZR), the owner of Harrah's and Harvey's in Lake Tahoe, announced early Thursday that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in federal court in Chicago for its main operating unit in an attempt to beat back an effort by some creditors who filed their own bankruptcy plan in Delaware on Monday. They claim the company has cheated them.

Laure Penny hired as new Douglas County Clerk to the Board

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners have a new clerk after Laure Penny was hired to replace the retired Lorraine Kabat.

Penny, who began work Monday, was most recently was a paralegal for Nevada Attorney for Injured Workers with prior employment as a Supreme Court Clerk and legal secretary.

“Douglas County is one of my favorite places to be and I am very excited to be able to work for and serve the wonderful people who live here,” said Penny.

High energy at SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe

There is so much more to SnowGlobe that the beat of the bass heard echoing through the trees in your neighborhood. It is much more than a very large group of young people turning out for a techno concert outdoors.

It is an experience.

I am a member of the "over 50" crowd so the music featured at SnowGlobe is not something I know much about so I went into SnowGlobe to see what it's all about.

Sacramento man pleads guilty in immigration marriage scheme

A Sacramento man pled guilty today to conspiring to induce aliens to illegally enter the Unites States for private financial gain.

Sippy Lal, 61 was arrested in 2012 along with co-defendants Mamta Sharma and Rani Singh-Lal on charges they ran an elaborate immigration-fraud scheme involving foreign nationals from India who paid money to have a sham marriage in order to get into the country. The trio recruited U.S. citizens in the Sacramento area in an effort to legalize their immigration status.

Reno man pleads guilty after flying marijuana across country

Kevin Dennis Golden, 39, of Reno, Nevada, pleaded guilty today to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

Placerville business owner sentenced for filing false tax returns

Thomas Stringfellow of Placerville was sentenced today to 18 months in prison and order to pay $687,182 in restitution for willfully making false tax returns.

The 55-year old underreported his business income on tax returns by more than $1.1 million from 2006 to 2010 according to court documents. During that time he was also found guilty of underreporting his personal income by more than $1,000,000.

Grand Jury indicts King Fire suspect Wayne Huntsman on felony arson charges

The man accused of starting the King Fire earlier this year has been indicted on felony arson charges according to the The El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson.

Wayne Huntsman is charged with felony arson of forest land with multiple special allegations of arson with aggravating factors. He sits in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe with a bail set at $10,000,000.
