Actors and crew sought for LTCC play "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot"

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is the next play being put on by the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Theatre Arts Department and they will soon be holding auditions.

There are a wide variety of roles available for men and women. Auditions are Tuesday, January 6 at 7 p.m. in LTCC’s Duke Theatre. Performances will be March 13 through 22, 2015.

LTCC trying to add four year Public Safety Administration degree

A four year degree program could be in Lake Tahoe Community College's near future. They are waiting to hear from the California Community College's Chancellor's office to see if they are one of the 15 community colleges in the state who will be allowed the opportunity to offer one four-year degree.

LTCC's Baccalaureate Degree Steering Committee submitted a proposal to the Chancellor's office and should hear on January 21, 2015 if they are going to be offering a four-year degree in Public Safety Administration.

Ex-Douglas County Sheriff deputy among Nevada residents sought in casino takeover

Northern Nevada’s U.S. Marshals-led fugitive task force is asking for the public’s help in tracking three men accused if a violent takeover of a casino in Madera County, California.

Sought are 46-year-old Timothy Tofaute and 35-year-old David Dixon, both residents of Sparks, and 38-year-old Brian Auchenbach of Gardnerville.

Long time local fights for public access at Connelly Beach

Janet McDougall used the public comment portion of a recent South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting to speak of her concern that people would lose access to Connelly Beach. Council members took interest and the subject is on Tuesday's Council agenda.

McDougall, a resident of South Lake Tahoe since 1963 and a graduate of South Tahoe High in 1975, spent 17 years working in the city attorney's office in town. She said that during that time she saw a growing amount of beaches becoming unavailable to the public.

Family Friendly: A trip to a Reno Bighorns game

I had always planned to drive off the hill to watch a Reno Bighorns game, but I never found the opportunity. That is, until this weekend. It's hard to believe they've been in Reno since 2008!

My son Chris won tickets by answering a Bighorn trivia game on a Reno radio station, so my daughter Abby and I drove down Friday night to join him and watch the season opener against the Iowa Energy.

SLT man to spend one year in jail and pay $160,000 for worker's comp fraud

A South Lake Tahoe man who spent at least 40 days a year skiing while claiming he was totally disabled from employment was sentenced today to one year in prison and ordered to pay $160,000 in restitution.

End to decade long battle between USFS and environmental groups

Environmental groups concerned that the 2004 Sierra Nevada Framework Forest Plan failed to protect old growth forests and associated wildlife species, was not consistent with national environmental laws so they filed suit.

A coalition of conservation organizations led by Sierra Forest Legacy and including the Center for Biological Diversity, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club and The Wilderness Society have signed a settlement agreement with the U.S. Forest Service, ending the decade long battle.

South Lake Tahoe Police Warn Residents of Jury Duty Scam

Several residents of the South Lake Tahoe community were scammed out of thousands of dollars over the weekend by fraudulent phone callers identifying themselves as law enforcement officers. The callers, who apparently sounded very convincing and knew names of local judges, court clerks and officers, told the unsuspecting citizens that there were warrants for their arrest due to failing to respond to a jury duty summons.

Two public hearings on the Meyers Area Plan in October

Accused arsonist Wayne Huntsman in South Lake Tahoe jail

Wayne Allen Huntsman, the accused King Fire arsonist, is sitting in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe awaiting his next court date on October 28, 2014.

Huntsman was arrested on September 17 on felony charges of Arson on Forest land with a Special Allegation of Arson with Aggravating Factors. He was arraigned in Superior Court in Placerville on Friday and transferred to the county jail in South Lake Tahoe. His bail was set at $10,000,000.

Dylan Sullivan appointed to El Dorado County Superior Court by Governor Brown

Honorable Dylan Sullivan was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to fill retiring Judge Daniel B. Proud's seat on the El Dorado County Superior Court. She won the June primary to become the Judge for Office 5, so this announcement moved up her start date by four months.

Judge Sullivan has been specifically assigned to department 7 by Presiding Judge Suzanne N. Kingsbury, due to her training and experience, to assist the Court in effectively implementing criminal justice realignment in El Dorado County. She was sworn in by Kingsbury on September 19.

Pollock Pines man arrested for starting King Fire; Bail set at $10,000,000

Wayne Allen Huntsman, 37. was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of Arson on Forest land with a Special Allegation of Arson with Aggravating Factors. Law enforcement officials held a press conference Thursday at the Cal Fire base in Camino, announcing the arrest.

Huntsman is being held in lieu of $10 million bail.

Arraignment is scheduled for Friday, September 19, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in Department 7 of the El Dorado County Superior Court in Placerville.

Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire

9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.

After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.

Douglas County Sheriffs looking for man who skipped drug court

A 19 year old man is being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department. Seth Daniel Rogers is wanted for failing to appear in drug court and for a warrant for traffic offenses.

DCSO is asking for the public's help in locating Rogers. He is described as having green eyes, being 5'10" tall and weighing 155 lbs.

South Lake Tahoe students needed for Teen Court

If you're a student in South Lake Tahoe in grades 8 through 12, you are invited to participate in the juvenile justice system through the county's Teen Court program.

Teens that go through volunteer training will serve as court personnel for real court cases where a minor has admitted to an offense and agreed to be judged by his/her peers.

Raley’s to pay $1.6 million to settle suit; Must provide emergency safe drinking water system

Raley’s has agreed to pay nearly $1.6 million in civil penalties, costs and funding for environmental projects as part of a settlement related to allegations of improperly disposing hazardous waste.

The judgment is the culmination of a civil enforcement lawsuit filed in San Joaquin County to stop the West Sacramento-based supermarket chain from unlawfully transporting and disposing of retail hazardous waste, according to a press release from at least two of the 25 district attorneys who announced the suit.

The settlement was approved by San Joaquin Superior Court Judge Bob McNatt.

Tahoe Douglas Sewer sued for failure to provide pay records

The Tahoe Douglas Sewer Improvement District is being sued for failure to abide by the Nevada Public Records Act and not providing payroll records when asked.

In a lawsuit filed in the Ninth Judicial District Court (covers Douglas County), the Nevada Policy Research Institute claims that the TDSI has refused to their request for the district's compensation records.

They say that, in the seven years NPRI has run TransparentNevada.com, the Tahoe Douglas Sewer Improvement District has been the least responsive government agency in Nevada.

There is one week left to turn in paperwork necessary to run for the two open seats on the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education.

One week left for LTCC candidates to file for November election

There are three seats up for grabs in the November election for the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees. Trustees from areas 1, 2 and 5 are up for re-election.

Area 1 is currently represented by Kerry David, who has announced his intention to seek re-election. Area 2 is currently represented by longtime Board member Roberta Mason, who is retiring from her seat after 40 years of service to the college. Area 5 is currently represented by Molly Blann, who announced in June that she is not seeking re-election.

Helicopter aides in search for man in South Lake Tahoe this evening

A missing man from the Fair Meadows Court area of South Lake Tahoe prompted a search by a CHP helicopter, El Dorado County Sheriff's officers and Search & Rescue Wednesday evening.

The man, a 66 year old from Pleasant Hill, CA, went out for a walk with his Siberian Husky late in the afternoon. When he didn't return to the home he and his brother and sister-in-law were staying at on Fair Meadows Court within an hour, his family became worried.

25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show flies into town

The 25th annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California is scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2014. The Lake in the Sky Air Show has been described as “the best in the west” by one of its many professional aerial participants.

All interested persons must be a registered voter and reside within the boundaries of Trustee Area #5 or #2. Area 5 covers a wide region from Cascade Lake to Meyers and Area 2 is part of the Al Tahoe and Bijou neighborhoods (see attached maps for exact boundaries).

Ex-chief of huge pension fund guilty of bribery; South Lake Tahoe businessman still faces charges

The former head of the nation’s largest pension fund admitted Friday that he took bribes, including hundreds of thousands of dollars stuffed in paper bags and a shoe box, and helped an associate collect millions in a fraudulent investment scheme.

Fred Buenrostro Jr. pleaded guilty in San Francisco federal court to fraud and bribery charges stemming from his time as chief executive of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System from 2002 to 2008.
