It's been almost a year since the 5,400 square foot Alta Mira Building was torn down in South Lake Tahoe in order to provide open space, improve water quality and remove blight.

Three preliminary design concepts for Regan Beach were presented at a community meeting in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday.

Almost 50 people attended the meeting, giving their input on the three choices. The engaged group gave Design Workshop, the company providing the redesign concepts, a lot of input on all three plans.

The City of South Lake Tahoe will be hosting a public meeting for the community to review three initial design concepts for future improvements to the Regan Beach Public Park on Tuesday, July 28th from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the gym at the Recreation and Swim Complex, located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.

Previous public meetings to gather public input were held in 2014 and 2015. Recently an online survey was posted for community members who could not attend meetings to submit their comments.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s (LTCC) Annual Commencement Ceremony will be held Friday, June 26 at 6 p.m. on the Community Playfield next to the LTCC Gymnasium. This year’s theme is “Leaving a Legacy,” meant to encourage students to continue to find ways to create and contribute to change in their communities after graduation, and throughout their lives.

Local photographer Jaime Emery recently celebrated the grand opening of her Rose Street Studio in its new location in Zephyr Cove, NV. Rose Street Studio offers clients the chance to create lasting memories through images captured by Emery.

Emery moved to Lake Tahoe in 2000 after graduating with a degree in Art and Design from Cal Pol, San Luis Obispo. Four years later she started Rose Street Studio. The new studio was a “life long goal” of Emery’s and the result of years of hard work.

Several South Shore businesses were among those honored during the 2nd Annual Douglas County Spotlight Awards. The Spotlight Awards recognize businesses in seven different categories: Retail, Restaurant, Manufacturing and Production, Sports and Recreation, Entrepreneur, Business and Professional Service, and Tourism and Hospitality.

The ceremony was held the County’s Financial State of the County event on Thursday, June 11.

The public is invited to the League to Save Lake Tahoe's free Summer Kickoff party at the League to Save Lake Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, June 10 at 5:00 p.m. Music, food, fun, prizes and education will all be part of the evening's activities.

The party will feature the grand re-opening of their Fritzi & David Huntington Environmental Education Center. Featuring cutting-edge interactive displays, the Education Center’s overhaul has improved the agency's ability to educate and engage the public about how to protect Lake Tahoe and the threats facing the Lake.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board on Wednesday unanimously approved the Tahoe Transportation District’s State Route 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project to realign State Route 89 through Tahoe City.

The project realigns State Route 89 to route through traffic over roundabouts and a new two-lane bridge across the Truckee River to reduce transportation conflicts among drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians at the congested pinch point at the Tahoe City “Wye.”

In a move to increase revenue by $13.571 million, Liberty Utilities filed an application Monday with the California Public Utilities Commission to raise rates to their 49,000 customers in the Lake Tahoe region by 17.34%.

The change would begin on January 1, 2016. Liberty Utilities said in a press release that the projected new residential rate of 16.73 cents per kwh (compared to the current 14.26 cents per kwh) is still equal or less than residential rates for neighboring electric utilities.

If you've ever driven by South Tahoe Middle School just as the kids get to school, or as they depart, you know what an unsafe area it can be for students on bikes and on foot. Because of this, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District secured a $154,000 grant from the TRPA On Our Way program to work with the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaborative to conduct outreach and develop a connectivity and mobility plan for the area.

The fourth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held on Friday, April 24th, and Saturday, April 25th, at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex at 1080 Rufus Allen Blvd. The show will be open to the public on Friday from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and Saturday, from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has completed the groundwork for Champions Plaza and now they're looking for an artist(s) to create an original art piece and/or flag designs to be permanently displayed at the the plaza located on the corner o Highway 50 and Lakeview Avenue, across from Lakeview Commons.

Learn how to design and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) for homes and small businesses in a series of workshops being presented by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency in coordination with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and Nevada Tahoe Conservation District.

Due to limited grant funding, this will be the last year the workshops for both the contractor and the do-it-youselfers will be held. The workshops will also be the last time businesses can qualify for the BMP Installation Service Providers List by having at least one supervisor per business attend.

Over 1,500 people attended the Tahoe Chamber's annual Business Expo at Harrah's Tahoe on Friday. Hundreds of businesses and dozens of volunteers created an evening that won't soon be forgotten.

The public is invited to a series of public hearings on the proposed State Route 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project. The completed design is expected in September with construction expected to start in May, 2016.

It is getting close to the final design approval on the Bijou Bike Park and the City of South Lake Tahoe and Bijou Bike Park Association would like the public's input before submitting it.

The meeting will be held at the multi-purpose room at Bijou Elementary School located at 3501 Spruce Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Center has been a significant part of South Lake Tahoe's community for 37 years. The founders, Tom and Cheryl Milham, have cared for orphaned and injured animals out of their home, and plans are now in place to move the center to the corner of Al Tahoe Blvd and Pioneer Trail.

With the South Lake Tahoe airport not having scheduled passenger service since 2001, and with a master plan last updated in 1992, it was time to create a new plan based on the needs of the area today, and in the future.

The FAA gave funding support to the City to initiate the new master plan in 2013. The recommended development shall be presented in three planning periods; short-term (2015 to 2019), intermediate-term (2020 to 2024), and long-term (2025 to 2034).

Brad Trexell, a former Opera Colorado and San Francisco Opera administrator was appointed executive director for Lake Tahoe SummerFest (www.tahoesummerfest.org), the classical music concert series in August.

A South Tahoe High graduate once again shines, and this time it was on one of the biggest stages. Scott Boyajan, a 1989 grad, was the special effects producer of a Nissan commercial that aired during Sunday's Superbowl.

Boyajan, who graduated from California State University, Chico, works for a52, a Los Angeles and New York based company that specializes in commercial and television film work.

The City Council Tuesday formalized the offer on the SW corner lot on Ski Run Blvd and Highway 50. The lot, along with 12,000 square feet of commercial floor area (CFA), was sold for $1.1 million to Halferty Development Company.

South Lake Tahoe Olympian Maddie Bowman used the U.S. Revolution Tour as a stepping stone to the Olympics, and fellow SLT freeskier Kyle Smaine is making his move on the same tour.

An early season leader, Smaine is now headed to the tour's next stop January 26 to 30 at Pennsylvania's Seven Springs Mountain Resort.
