Lake Tahoe, Sierra brace for winter storms to arrive as Christmas travel period begins
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 12/20/2012 - 7:16pmA series of strong winter storms will arrive in three waves and when it is over, anywhere from 2 to 5 feet of snow will have dropped above Lake Tahoe, at ski resorts, on highways and throughout much of the Sierra in time for Christmas.
A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through Monday morning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra as a strong series of systems moves into the region.
Periods of light to moderate snow will begin Friday and intensive early Saturday morning with moderate to heavy snow Saturday through Sunday night.

The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

Roderick Paul Clifton, 44, of Citrus Heights, and also listed as being from Gardnerville and Paula Lane, 46, also of Gardnerville, were reported missing by relatives when they didn't answer their cellphones and didn't return to Nevada by that night, according to Citrus Heights Police Department Det. Sgt. Lee Harrington.

Submitted by Editor on Fri, 11/16/2012 - 10:51pmDouglas County authorities are asking the public for help in identifying two men responsible for beating and robbing an unarmed man outside a South Shore Lake Tahoe casino Nov. 10 at around 9:45 p.m.
The two suspects were seen on video surveillance assaulting and robbing the victim outside the casino. The men, described as caucasian or light-skinned Hispanics ages 18 to 25, jumped and battered the victim, punching and kicking him repeatedly after he fell to the ground.

Douglas County Dispatch received a 911 call of a structure fire at the Genoa Station Grill and Bar, which is a newer business adjacent to the Genoa Town Hall. East Fork Fire and Paramedic District along with Douglas County Sheriff’s Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the scene, said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Current information indicates that Sperring entered the Desolation Wilderness by himself. He is well prepared and is reported to be an experienced cold weather camper with guide experience in Alaska. Before he left on his camping trip Nathan advised his girlfriend and parents where he was going and when he would be back. He specifically advised that if he was not back by Tuesday, Oct. 23, something was wrong. He was to return to Tahoe City.

Snow closes Lake Tahoe Unified School District schools, Whittell and Zephyr Cove delayed

Whittell High School and Zephyr Cove Elementary are open today with delays. Douglas County School District transportation operators report the school bus pick up on Upper Kingsbury will be on Tina Court and Ski Court due to icy road conditions.

Woman dies in Douglas County accident near valley side of Kingsbury Grade intersection
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 10/07/2012 - 1:09pmA Carson City woman died on Saturday in a single vehicle rollover accident on State Route 207 in Douglas County, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
Lynette Lucille Cieri, 63, died of injuries sustained in the accident. She was not wearing a seat belt.
The accident was reported at 5:20 p.m. at State Route 207 and Mottsville Lane. The preliminary investigation indicates a 1995 light green Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound on Mottsville Lane. For an unknown reason, the Jeep entered the north dirt shoulder of Mottsville Lane before re-entering the westbound lane.
Douglas County offers free flu shot clinic

This event is open to the general public. Both the flu shot and the nasal spray will be available.
Citizens are invited to stop by Douglas High School on Saturday, October 6th, 2012, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm for a free flu vaccination.

Douglas authorities seek help in Carson Valley burglaries

The first burglary occurred at the Verizon Wireless Outlet Store on Waterloo Lane sometime around 5 a.m. Entry was made by the suspect smashing the glass of the exterior window of the store. Carter Fire in Douglas County burns 3,000 acres, 30 percent containment
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 09/23/2012 - 10:24amThe Carter Springs Fire in Douglas County south of Gardnerville is estimated to have grown to approximately 3,000 acres. A perimeter has been established, and the fire is now burning unburned fuels within the perimeter, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
The fire is estimated to be 30 percent contained; with full containment expected by Sept. 25.
Highway 395 has reopened with no controls in both directions. Motorists are requested to slow down while traveling through the area, and watch for emergency vehicles accessing the area.
Forest Service: Fire at Elks Point Road near Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe fully contained at 2.6 acres
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 09/21/2012 - 4:02pmUPDATE 8PM: The U.S. Forest Service reports Friday night that the fire burning on the Douglas County side of Lake Tahoe on public land off of Elks Point Road has been contained at 2.6 acres. Cheva Heck, spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said local government resources assigned to the fire are being released. An engine will remain at the fire site overnight. The cause of the fire is under investigation. "We have no reports with lightning or problems with power lines. The fire is believed to be human caused," she said.
